<P><STRONG>King's Message Awarding the Title of General Chungmugong to Kim Simin, Jinju Magistrate</STRONG></P><STRONG></STRONG>
<P><BR>King's Message to Gasoendaibu Kyungsangwudo Byungmacholdosa and Magistrate of Jinju-mok Hyochoong-Janguie-hyubryuk-Soenmu Meritorious Subject Jahoendaibu Minister of Military Department and Jiueiguembusa Sangrak Prince Kim simin King said as follows.</P>
<P><BR>You already defended the solitary fortress killing many enemies and devoted your life for the sovereignty. Your loyalty deserves public acknowledgement. Thus I honour you specially according to the public opinion.</P>

<P>As your character is great and vigor, you already passed the military service examination of archery and horse riding. You resolved to practice fidelity to yourself and determined to serve the country at the time of hardship without a change. Unfortunately, the country suffered the attacks of the island barbarian. Because of the hundred year long peaceful period, people weren't strong minded and it was difficult to find a manly person when the whole country swayed in the strong wind. At the time, you, then Jinyang(Jinju) Pangwan stood as a great pillar and requested some brave soldiers to the provincial governor. Leading them, you defeated the thief enemies swarmed in the nearby counties and drove them away. Your reputation spreaded out and people got comforted relying on you. </P>

<P>When the official soldiers were out to fight in other places, the enemy took advantage of the situation and attacked Jinju fortress. Hearing the report, you returned to the fortress without any hesitance which proved that your attitude toward death was as fearless as people return to their own houses. In reconstructing four corners of the fortress with carried stones, you worked harder than any other soldiers, refrained from delicious food and shared insufficient commodities with them, thus received their respect. In commanding on the fortress walls with bloody tears you promised to defend the fortress with your death to the soldiers. You encouraged soldiers day and night and were wise in devising strategies. You fought with a small number of soldiers against a large number of enemies without any outside support. In the unfavourable situation, you could drove the bad enemies out only because of your loyalty from the start to the end. </P>

<P>Because of the merits, I awarded you more than once before. At first I promoted you to the magistrate position in honoring your reputation and then to the highest commander of the soldiers, anticipating to see your achievement as a great lumber. Unexpectedly you were shot by a flying bullet and fell as a great wall collapsed. You might not be regrettable because you fulfilled your will as a generous general when alive and a loyal subject when dead. However I feel pain in my heart because I cannot share with you the comfort and enjoyment after overcoming the difficulties together. </P>

<P>I add you the title of minister(Minister of War) and will appoint your descendants to government posts, however, that wouldn't be enough in honoring you. The enemy reattacked and seized the fortress which makes me consider your distinguished service more valuable. You loved the people of Jinju dearly and they wrote a sincere memorial to me in honoring you. The survey of public opinion is the same and I agree to it. </P>
<P><BR> Thus I appoint you to Seonmugongsin 2nd grade and raise you two ranks. Your parents, wife and children are raised one rank. If you don't have a son, your nephew and son in law would be raised one rank. The eldest son will inherit this privilege and keep receiving the salary. In case of committing a crime, he will be pardoned forever. </P>

<P>October Malryog 32 year (Seal of King)<BR>Jinju Great Victory and King's Message Awarding Kim Simin<BR> During the Imjin Japanese invasion, the titles of Hojonggongsin for escorting the King and Seonmugongsin for military services. The latter were awarded to Kim Simin. Gongsin message is a king's message awarding a person who served the country, describing the details of the distinguished services and contents of the award. Both dead and living persons were awarded and the differences in awarding the dead and the living were as follows. For the living person, subordinate personnel titled Bandang and Gusa were given and the portrait of the living was painted and attended but not that of the dead. </P>
<P><BR>Kim Simin's gyoseo is in a Japanese old book store. It is important as a research material of Imjin Japanese Invasion and has literary value because it expresses the king's affection well. It is written on green undyed silk in the printed writing style neatly. </P>
<P><BR>Jinju Great Victory was the first big victory on land in the circumstances of a great peril that the king fled to Euiju because Japanese soldiers seized Pyeongyang. The victory was possible because of the cooperation of nearby armies owing to the active role of Hakbong Kim Seongil. However, at the second battle in June 1593, about 60,000 Jinju people were massacred by Japanese in revenge of the defeat of the first battle. Jinju Great Victory has historical meaning that it destroyed the Japanese attempt to occupy Jeollado which is a granary of Korea, along with Yi Sunsin's battles on the water and Joheon's battle in Geumsan and Ungchi war. The protected grain was essentially important during the Imjin Japanese Invasion. Details about Jinju Great Victory were recorded in Kim Seongil's Jinju Fortress Victory Report to the King. <BR> <BR></P>
