<풋볼아시아>는 특히 "그 아버지의 그 아들(Like Father, Like Son)"이라는 제목으로 "한국의 축구영웅 차범근이 독일에서 거뒀던 전설적 활약이 아들 차두리를 통해 재현될 것이다"고 주장했다. (다음 미디어, 2004-01-08)

아니 땐 굴뚝에 연기나랴?: Where there is smoke, there is fire / smoking gun

The rumors surrounding that break-up are that Ryan had an affair with Crowe while filming Proof of Life with him. Ryan strongly denies the accusation. But sometimes where there is smoke there is fire (Buzzle.co.uk- UK-based Internet news)

멕 라이언이 러셀 크로우와 바람을 펴서 전 남편 Dennis Quaid와 이혼 (break-up) 했다는 루머를 라이언은 극구 부인하지만 "아니 땐 굴뚝에 연기나랴?" 이렇게 묻고 있네요.

He says that the Republicans are in collusion with Feinstein"s opponent in the Democratic primary.... "To announce a lawsuit like this, 60 days before the vote, is suspicious and where there is smoke, I think, there usually is fire." (Bank of English)

민주당 대선후보 경선 (Democratic primary)을 60일 앞두고 Feinman이라는 후보에게 누가 소송을 걸었습니다. Feinman 측은 이것은 공화당과 Feinman의 경쟁자들이 뭔가 음모를 벌이는 것이라고 주장하며, "아니 땐 굴뚝에 연기나랴?" 이렇게 말하고 있죠.  

Hans Blix, chief of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, said there was no ``smoking gun"" to prove Iraq had nuclear, chemical or biological weapons but demanded Baghdad provide evidence to back claims that it had destroyed its weapons of mass destruction (NYT).

Where there is fire...가 어떤 숨겨진 행동의 간접적 증거를 말한다면 smoking gun이란 총을 쏘았다는 직접적 증거, 즉 범행의 직접적이고 부인할 수 없는 증거를 말합니다. 여기서는 대량살상무기가 있다는 확고한 증거가 되겠죠.

청천하늘에 날벼락 strike out of a clear blue sky

김치국물부터 마신다 count one"s chickens (before they are hatched)

"We don"t want to count our chickens before they are hatched," he said, repeating that the deal still needed government approvals. 

"You hope! Don"t count your chickens." "What"s that supposed to mean?" "You won"t get it," she blurted out, so forcefully that the words came out as a shout.

Counting their chickens: Democrats and Republicans are fighting over what to do with $4.5 trillion of future federal budget surpluses. But will the money really be there?

그러나 count one"s chicken이 김치국물 마신다는 뜻으로 쓰이지 않는 경우도 있습니다. 아래 예문에서 이 표현은 "승리, 또는 성공을 장담할 수 없다"를 의미합니다:

I know there have been a few shops that have closed in this parade of shops, so I won"t count my chickens before they hatch. All I can say is so far so good.
