Preventing Problem Behavior (문제 행동 예방)
(What is Problem Behavior?)
Behaviors that can cause harm or limit a person’s choices in life need to be prevented or
reduced.
Behaviors that interfere with safety are often targeted in behavior reduction interventions. These
behaviors pose harm to the person engaging in the behavior or others in the environment.
Behaviors that interfere with learning can either be obvious or hard to detect. These types of
behaviors don’t necessarily cause anyone to be in danger, but they do cause disruption to the
environment or an individual’s ability to learn.
People with autism may share some of the same characteristics, but how those characteristics
manifest themselves in behavior is individual to the person displaying it.
People with autism often develop adequate communication skills late or not at all.
Sometimes, people with autism use echolalia for self-stimulation.
One theory that attempts to explain why people with autism do not interact socially like people
without autism is that they have a difficult time understanding the perspective of others.
Repetitive behaviors are behaviors that an individual performs over and over that may appear to
serve no purpose to an observer.
Restricted interests have also been referred to as perseverative interests or obsessions.
Noises, lights, smells, certain textures of foods, tags in clothing, and others can provide a source
of discomfort for certain individuals.
(Environmental Prevention and Support)
Environmental prevention and support involves making changes to a child’s surroundings to
reduce triggers and increase engagement in appropriate behaviors.
The answer to the question of why problem behaviors occur is simple. The problem behavior
works for the person in some way.
If the function of a behavior is gain, this means that the person is displaying the behavior in order
to get access to something.
Many problem behaviors occur because a person is trying to gain someone else’s attention.
Behaviors that result in automatic reinforcement can be categorized as self-stimulatory behavior
or pain relieving.
If the function of a behavior is escape, this means that the person is displaying the behavior to
avoid an interaction, a demand, or to leave a situation they do not like.
Events or conditions that the person experiences determine if a problem behavior happens or
not.
Antecedents, behavior, consequence, or ABC, are a way of describing the context of a behavior.
Motivating operations, or MOs, make a reinforcer or punisher more or less effective.
MOs are variables that are operating before a person displays a behavior.
An uncomfortable environment can serve as an MO or antecedent for problem behavior.
A well-organized environment can reduce anxiety and help clients be more engaged in
intervention.
If the task the client is supposed to perform has multiple steps, you should break these steps into
smaller ones, so they are easier to complete.
Errorless learning ensures that clients do not experience the frustration of incorrect responses
and learn how to correctly perform the task.
One helpful strategy is called the high-probability request sequence. This means you tell the
learner to do a few easy things that they usually do quickly, and then you give a harder direction.
When presenting choices, you should use a forced choice over an open-ended one.
Transitions can set the stage for problem behavior.
Functional communication training, or FCT, is a strategy used to help clients replace challenging
behavior with appropriate communication.
Replacement behaviors are appropriate alternatives to challenging ones.
Lesson 3: 강화 기반 예방 (Reinforcement Based Prevention)
Non-contingent reinforcement, or NCR, means giving access to a reinforcer on a fixed time
schedule, no matter what the client is doing.
NCR helps prevent problem behavior by reducing the motivation to engage in that behavior.
Differential reinforcement is giving reinforcement for behaviors that should be increased and
removing it for those that should be decreased.
Preventing problem behavior requires a comprehensive approach.
