▣ Nine in the Fourth Line(九四,구사) :
It leaps or remains in the abyss; there will be no blame.
[Interpretation]
For Nine in the Fourth Line, if it leaps or falls back into the abyss,
there is no blame.
[Explanation]
From [Nine in the Fouth Line],
directions open up on all sides and adverse conditions loosen.
It is good to flap both wings and soar high.
It is no longer a time to live with unconditional caution.
If your skills have built up enough to leap, do not fear and leap forward[Hok-yak-jae-yeon].
Even if you fall into the water while leaping upward, you will not die.
Humans are creatures that crawl on two arms and walk on two legs,
so they always long to fly.
Since you have nothing to lose, now is the time to demonstrate your capabilities at least once.
Confucius also stated through the 'Wenyan Zhuan".
"Leaping or remaining in the abyss [Hok-yak-jae-yeon] means there in no blame
in advancing [ Jin-mu-gu-ya]."
He also made it known that :
" Leaping or remaining in the abyss means testing oneself [Ji-si-ya],
or that transformation begins in the Way of Heaven [Geon-do-nae- hyeok]."
This signifies advancing into worldly success and initiating revolution.
However, only the individual knows whether their skills are fully built up or not.
The 4th Position marks the point where the Later Heaven(Posterior Heaven) begins.
If up to the 3rd Position repreaented the era of the Prior Heaven(Anterior Heaven)
as a preparatory phase, from now on, it must be viewed as the time to step
into the world and display one′s statesmanship.
When a disciple asks, "What does 'Leaping or remaining in the abyss,
there will be no blame[Hok-yak0jae-yeon-mu-gu]' mean[Ha-wi-ya]?",
Confucius answers as follows :
"Whether moving upward or downward, there is no fixed rule,
yet no problem arises [Sang-ha-mu-sang]."
However, as a prerequisite, he attaches the condition :
"It is not for committing evil deeds [Bi-wi-sa-ya]."
Furthermore, regarding 'abvancing and retreating without constancy [Jin-toe-mu-hang]",
because this is a position where one must ascend the dragon′s throne immediately
if given the opportunity, he noted :
"It means not straying from the group of dragons [Bi-ri-gun-ya]."
In other words, whether leaping or not leaping, there must be no self-interest
in that action, and one must not act driven by personal desires.
Those who fail to realize this create fault for themselves by completely forgetting
their past in lower positions once they reach the top,
mistakenly believing they will remain attached to that high position dorever.
Confucius adds, 'When a Junzi steps into the world to accomplish great deeds
after cultivating virtue {Jin-deok-su-eop], they can avoid blame only if it aligns
precisely with the right time [Yog- gup-si- ya] [Mu-gu]."
Working for the world comes from being called upon by the world ;
if there is no longer a place to be used,
one must return to their original place serenely and live with standard,
unchanging virtue [Yang] as if nothing had happened―only then are they a true Junzi.
Even a president′s homecoming today should be an unpretentious case of
"moving upward or downward without fixed attachment"[Sang-ha-mu-sang].
If someone who steps into the world facing the Later Heaven ear―
like [Nine in the Fourth Line] ― has a nature that is too strong,
they easily lose balance[Joong-gang-i-bul-joong].
Then, they cannot receive proper treatment from superiors[Sang-bul-jae-cheon],
and naturally, they wish to avoid disrespectful treatment from subordinates
[Ha-bul-jae-jeon].
In such a state, if they blindly rush forward without knowing top, bottom, front,
or back [Hok-ji-ja], isn′t it as clear as day that it will arouse suspicion[Ui-ji-ya] ?
Knowing that at a time when they ought to serve the world,
they lack supporting forces from below and recognition from above,
if they proceed with caution, fault will surely disappear [Mu-gu].
[Nine in the Fourth Line] is the case where the Qian HExagram(The Creative)
transitions into the Xiaoxu hexagram(Small Restraint).
If one approaches the world with faith and sincerity,
they can overcome bloody hardships, break free from suspicion and fear,
and remain free from trouble[Yu-bu-hyeol-geo-cheok-chul-mu-gu].
Therefore, Dongpa(Su Sin) traches that sinse the fourth Line represents
a stage where one has already stepped outside and cannot simply return,
retreating means falling into misfortune―hence, one must leap forward.
Thus, because the Third and Fourth Lines present a mix of both misfortune
and fortune simultaneously, one must carefully observe the situation
before proceeding so that fault disappears.
'Yak-ryong'(Leaping Dragon) is the position where a submerged dragon
attempts to fly toward the sky, testing itself in a four-dimensional realm.
It is a stage where a gentleman who has cultivated path and learning
steps directly out into the world to test his abilities,
or assumes heavy responsibilities as ptime minister on behalf of the monarch
to display his statesmanship.
In Chapter 32 of the Doctrine of the Mean(Zhongyong), it is also said :
"How deep and abyssal it is ![Yeon-yeon-gi-yeon];
how vast and boundless is the sky![Ho-ho-gi-cheon]."
Because a pond is a place where small streams(Seryu) from various places fiow in,
thus is used as a metaphor for a chance to moiaten the great esrth once
a gentleman of path and learning completes his studies, just as a pond fills with water.
As a historical allusion, it is viewed as the time when King Wen could not yet strike
King Zhou of Shang, and when Emperor Shun(Da Shun) had not yet reached
the time to ascend the throne.
Nonetheless, even if not the position of a monarch,
the postition of a minister is granted.
Particularly in inscriptions(Gimyeong), there are many teachings regarding
'Jin-deok-su-eop'(cultivating virtue and advancing one′s endeavors).
Truly, the two words 'Jin-su' are important.
Sages said :
"To pursue learning for oneself and set one′s intent on saving the world,
first establish the foundation and remember 'Jin-deok-su-eop' far and wide."
It is also said that 'Jin-deok-su-eop' becomes an even more precious
endeavor in old age.
Since one must refine learning by following teachers and friends to avoid
falling into the level of beasts, there is also advice not to harbor a divided
mind until the end when engaging in 'Jin-deok-su-eop'.
Since learning dependss solely on 'Jin-deok-su-eop',
it was said not to worry even if struck by a fatal illness :
"Setting intrnt on the traces of sages early on, strive diligently in 'Jin-deok-su-eop',
practice filial piety, brotherly affection, loyalty, and trust starting from within the
home and village, firmly hold onto ancient wisdom, and simply observe the present."
