1. I need [a truck /to transport onions]. 형역부정사구; 양파수송용 트럭이 필요하다 2. I need [a truck] / to transport onions. 부역부정사구; 양파를 수송하기 위해서 트럭이 필요하다
결국 the same difference 그게그거 같은 의미로 나오니 굳이 형역/부역 구분할 필요는 없겠지만
그래도 뉘앙스 차이는 있는 거라 공부삼아 해보자
영어인은 형용사 구별로 which? 나 what kind? 를 쓴다 need which truck? what kind of truck? 어떤 트럭이 필요해? a truck to transport onions 양파 운송용으로 쓰일 트럭
I need [a truck] / in order to transport onions. (O) 양파를 나르기 위해서 특정한 트럭이 아닌 아무 트럭, 어떤 트럭 필요 하다니
어떤 트럭이나 나르기만 하면 된다 본다 즉 트럭을 특정한 트럭으로 한정/제한하는 형용사가 없기 때문이다
I need [a truck] / to transport onions. 에서 부정사구를 부사역할로 본다면
I need a truck for transforting onions. 처럼 전치사+동명사=전치사구를 쓰면 의미가 간단히 해결되나
이건 어디까지나 글로 쓸 경우에만 그렇고
실제 회화에서는 I need [a truck] / to transport onions. 하면
What kind of/which truck do you need? 하고 물을거니 굳이 신경쓸 필요는 없는 말이라
단지 공부삼아 해 보는것 뿐이다
Following are some examples of infinitives/infinitive phrases being used as adjectives:
I need [a truck /to transport onions]. ("to transport onions" modifies "truck") 비교; The truck is to transport onions 즉 특수용도의 트럭 I want [a pen /to write]. ("to write" modifies "pen") 비교; The pen is to write 명사와 동격으로 쓰인 부정사구
I need [a dog /to protect my house]. ("to protect my house" modifies "dog"
Do you have [an application /to complete]? ("to complete" modifies "application")
부역/형역혼동 문제 해결방법
ㄱ. 부역
위치상 부역이라도 명사인 목적 뒤에 쓰일 수 있기에 잘 못하면 형역으로 오인할 수도 있으나 의미상 동작의 의도를 설명하므로 부정사의 동작자가 반드시 필요하다 구조상 부사는 동작설명이라 이동성이 있고 in order to~ 전치사구로 고쳐 써도 의미가 통한다
Ann hosted a picnic /to celebrate the achievements of the students. 부역부정사구
Ann hosted a picnic /in order to celebrate the achievements of the students. 전치사구로 전환
To celebrate the achievements of the students, Ann hosted a picnic. 문두로 이동 가능
ㄴ. 형역
형역 부정사구는 명사 뒤에 위치가 고정되어 있어 이동하면 의미가 통하지 않고
선행 명사를 한정하여 어떤 종류의 명사인가를 제한/설명하는 형용사구이기에 형용사절로 전환할 수도 있다
The church should be [the best place /to ask those questions].
The church should be the best place where you are to ask those questions. (부정사구로 쓰기 위해 be to~로 씀)
To ask those questions, the church should be the best place. (X) 이동불가 및 교회가 부정사의 동작자가 못되니 아니다
* 형역부정사구의 두가지 유형
형역 부정사가 쓰이는 경우는 단 두가지 유형이 있다
1. 선행 명사는 부정사의 목적인 경우
You have a fish to cook.
a fish to cook = to cook a fish
I have a fish for you to look at.
a fish to look at = to look at the fish
Next, I ran down a list of items /to accomplish /the next day. a list of items /to accomplish /the next day = to accomplish /the next day [a list of items]
* 부정사구에 목적이 포함된 경우에는 형절로만 전환이 가능하고 is 가 있는 동격 부정사구의 경우로 이해하면 된다
I need [a truck /to transport onions].
[a truck /to transport onions] = [a truck which is /to transport onions]
2. 앞명사와 동격 부정사구
We need the objective of its use to teach some kind of a moral lesson.
명사 use 를 설명/묘사/수식하는 부정사구는 앞 명사의 용도 를 설명하는 역할이라 동격이라 하므로
명사 = 부정사구 관계로 되므로 주어+be+보어 구조로 쓸 수 있다
the objective of its use is to teach some kind of a moral lesson.
또는
the objective of its use which is to teach some kind of a moral lesson.
영영사전에서 동사의 정의를 설명할 때 동격 부정사구로 쓰는 경우와 비슷하다
To teach is to give someone knowledge or to train someone; to instruct:
아래는 영어인들의 형역부정사구 분별에 관한 토론이다
The infinitives or infinitive phrases used above are all adjectives. In the first example I shared, you might be thinking, "'but, to transport onions' is an adverb because it answers 'why?'" This would be an incorrect way of deglossing the sentence.
What I need is a truck. Truck is a noun. What kind of truck? A truck to move onions.
As opposed to a truck that transports engines, or a truck to show off in an autoshow, or any other truck. What you really want is a truck, but not any truck -- you want a truck //that transports onions. "To transport onions" is modifying "truck," making it an adjective.
The second infinitive demonstrates what kind of pen you want.
The third infinitive (phrase) tells what type of dog you need. Not a dog to sit on my lap, not a dog to brush, not a dog to breed, but a dog to protect my house.
The fourth infinitive states what kind of application. Not an application that's already complete 완료, but an application to complete. 잠재/미래
I'll show you [the boxes /to move downstairs]. I'll show you [the boxes /to be moved downstairs]. 부정사가 능동이면 주어/목적 또는 일반인의 능동동작 암시고 수동이면 단지 박스를 수식하는 형용사적인 역할로 되므로
내가 너나 능동적으로 이동해야할 박스기에 굳이 수동으로 써야할 이유는 없다 본다
His
freedom was a gift to be stewarded.
the man /to see about the job 봐야할/만날 그 사람/모집관 (잠재적인 미래동작) the man /seeing the recruiter 모집관을 만나고 있는 그 사람/구직자 (지금 진행중)
하여 부정사로 수식된 명사를 분사로 수식된 명사로 고쳐보아 의미가 어찌 달라지는지 알아보자
* 분사는 명사의 동작/피동작이어야 하니 명사가 분사의 동작을 하는지 못하는지에 따라 현분/과분으로 해야된다
1. [the best route /to take] "길가는데 최고로 좋은" 경로; route 는 take 의 대상이다; 용도설명
2. [the best route /taking] (X) 도로가 분사인 taking 이라는 동작을 할 수 없으므로 불가
3. [the best route /taken] 이미 잡혀진 경로; route 는 take 의 수동주어이다
부정사의 잠재성 때문에 잠정적으로 잡을 경로가 되며
이 부정사의 동작자가 일반인이면 의미상 주어가 필요 없으나 특정인이면 써 주면 되고;
This is [the best route for you /to take]
문장에 쓰인 부정사는 주어나 목적의 동작이 될 수도 있기에
형역부정사구는 능동형으로 써 준다
I'll show you [the best route /to take] (O) 용도/의도 설명
I'll show you [the best route /to be takeen] (X)
목적이 부정사의 동작을 능동적으로 하기에 능동부정사가 쓰인다
You take the best route. = to take the best route = the best route to take
바로 여기에 부정사의 수식을 받는 명사가 부정사의 목적도 되는 비밀이 설명된다
현분사를 형절로 바꾸면 [the best route which is taking] 으로 되어 경로가 taking 을 한다는 억지의미가 되고
과분사는 이미 잡힌, 끝난 일이라 미래성의 부정사와는 전혀 다른 의미가 된다
[the best route /taken] = [the best route which had/has/was/is taken]
그밖의 예문
[the best attitude /to have] "가지기에 최고인" 마음자세; to have the best attitude 용도설명 [the best attitude having] (X) 명사가 분사의 동작을 못하니 불가 [the best attitude /acquired] 이미 가진/획득된 마음자세; 능동은 못되도 수동은 됨 * 영어는 수동/능동을 까칠하게 따지니 요 주의
a rule /to remember 기억할 규칙 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) a rule /remembered 기억된 규칙 (과분사의 끝난 동작)
an issue /to debate 토론할 논재 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) an issue /debated 토론된 논재 (과분사의 끝난 동작) an issue /being debated 토론 되어지고 있는 논재 (수동 진행 상황)
a sandwich /to eat 먹을 샌드위치 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) a sandwich / eaten 먹힌 샌드위치 (과분사의 끝난 동작)
a book /to read 읽을 책 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) a book read 읽혀진 책 (과분사의 끝난 동작)* 과거형/분사는 발음이 다름; 렏
a difficulty /to overcome 극복할 난제 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) a difficulty /overcome 극복된 난제 (과분사의 끝난 동작) fish /to fry 튀길 생선 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) * to fry fish 생선 튀기기 fish /fried (fried fish) 튀긴 생선 fish being fried 지금 튀겨지고 있는 생선
things /to do 할일 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명)
things /done 된일 (과분사의 끝난 동작)
* 1. things to do 문장에 쓰인 주어나 목적 혹은 일반인의 능동동작로 암시됨
2. things to be done 단지 명사수식의 형용사역할로 해져야 할 일이기에 동작자가 누구인지는 모름
people /to meet 만날 사람 (부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) people / met 만난 사람 (과분사의 끝난 동작) guests /to invite 초대할 손님(부정사의 잠재 동작; 용도/의도 설명) guests / invited 초대한/된 손님 (과분사의 끝난 동작)
[Your idea /to spend the day together]"하루를 같이 보낼" 생각 [Your idea /spending/spent the day together] (X) 명사가 할 동작이 아니니 말이 않됨
* 명사와 형역부정사가 주어/보어 관계로 설명되는 수식이나 명사와 형역 현재분사는 명사의 능동 동작이라는 관계로 명사를 수식하는 차이가 있다
[no reason /to doubt your sincerity] " 너의 성실성을 의심할" 이유없는 [no reason /doubting/doubted your sincerity] (X) 말이 않됨
a principle /to guide you 너를 인도할/하기 위한 원칙 a principle / guiding you 너를 인도하고 있는 원칙 a comedian /to amuse the crowd 군중을 웃기기 위한 웃찾사 a comedian / amusing the crowd 군중을 웃기고 있는 웃찾사 words /to inspire the citizens 시민에게 영감을 줄/주기위한 말들 words / inspiring the citizens 시민에게 영감을 주고있는 말들
God’s plan /to bless the nations 많은 나라들을 축복하기 위한 하나님의 계획 God’s plan / blessing/blessed the nations (X) 말이 않되는건 계획이란게 잠재성/미래적이기 때문임
I’m going to give you [food to
eat] and [water to drink] /to sustain you.
형역전구; to eat, to drink, 부역전구; to sustain you
6. 형역 부정사구와 전목 동명사구
1a. There might be a chance /of persuading her.
1b. There might be a chance /to persuade her.
형용사적인 역할의 부정사구를 같은 형용사구인 분사구를 쓰면
a chance /persuading her로 되어 문법 구조상으로는 하자가 없지만
분사는 동작자응 요구하는 형용사인 때문에 추상명사/무생물이 설득하는 주체가 되어 억지가 되므로
특정동작자를 요구하지 않는 명사형인 동명사구를 전목으로 써야
"그녀를 설득하는 것에 관련된 기회"로 되어 논리적인 의미가 구성된다
부정사야 물론 동격설명의 경우로 쓰였고 당장이 아닌 잼재성이기에 논리적이 된다
chance = to persuade her
2a. I had no chance of making them listen.
— i.e. it would not have been possible for me to make them listen.
2b. I had no chance to make them listen.
— i.e. I had no opportunity to make them listen.
본동사가 과거시제인 경우에 쓰인 동명사는 시도를 해 보았으나 하지 못했다는바
동명사의 과거사실 특성에 의거한 뉘앙스가 나오고
부정사로 쓴 경우는 잠재성 특성이 발동되어 과거에 실제로 했다는 의미가 아니고
하려 했었다로 되므로 나중에라도 했는지 아닌지는 여전히 미지수다
I went to fish. 낚시하러 갔었는제 실제로 간건지는 모른다
I went to fish, but missed the boat.
I went fishing. 실제로 낚시를 했었다
I went fishing, but didn't catch a single fish.
이런 시시콜콜한 내용들을 알면 글의 뉘앙스 차이도 알고
작문시에 원어민에게 어색/이상하지 않고 잘 통하는 글을 쓸 수 있다

Remember
that an adjective is a word that modifies a noun or pronoun and
answers the questions: which one? what kind? and how many? An
infinitive that acts like an adjective will do the same thing.
부정사구가 형역일 경우
which one? what kind? and how many? 의 질문에 답이된다
Example: After breaking his leg, Dave had [many obstacles /to overcome].
To overcome is the infinitive and tells which obstacles have to be overcome.
Thus, it modifies the noun, obstacles.
형역부정사가 obstacles 란 명사를 수식하니 which obstacles? 하고 질문하여 [obstacles /to overcome] 이라 대답되니 형역인걸 알 수 있다 즉 극복하기 위한 장애물이란 얘기다

To Study, Again (Demonstrating infinitives acting as adjectives and nouns) 명역/형역 부정사 찾기
I’ve
been thinking about study for some time, but haven’t yet decided on my
path. I returned to university in 1990, completing a degree in
multicultural and second language education in 1996. Since then, I have
not studied. To returnto school would require a few changes to my life. I worry about the many assignmentsto complete, and how I will find the time.To bea student again is not an easy decisionto make. Recently, the University of British Columbia made available a Master’s Program in Educational Technology, a good programto investigate.
If I do my Masters, my employer will increase my pay substantially. As
a part-time teacher, my pension will be based on my earnings; perhaps
this will motivate me to study again.
