A Fawn of Cheongju Heungdeok Temple
By Byung-hak Jang
Drifting clouds high in the sky,
a pale moon in the daylight,
silent gestures slicing through the air—
all awaken only my deepest longings.
White foam on the sea of my heart,
tinged with the blue light of the sun,
the sighs the universe has suddenly birthed—
my soul, too, surges toward them.
Beneath the ancient, jade-colored sky,
a vast sea where no breath stirs,
and no boat dares to set sail—
only lonely gulls cry out.
Fluttering high in the sky,
like a cuckoo who has lost its home,
your breath and pulse have left your homeland—my root.
And now, I long to spread my hopeful wings for you.
Those desperate cries of sorrow and solitude—
how could I ever know your aching heart
without touching its deepest depths?
Though I am a lost and lonely traveler,
still, I wait for the day you return to your homeland.
Here, in the East Asian wing
of the National Library of France,
the Jikji,* enduring a life of sorrow and solitude like Mangbuseok,**
still gazes—through tear-soaked eyes of longing—
toward the sky over Cheongju, my homeland in Korea.
This watercolor, steeped in longing, bears the memory of Jikji,
A Memory of the World Register.
You are a fawn of Heungdeok Temple—noble, and never to be forgotten.
(Translator's Note)
*Jikji is the oldest extant book (Anthology of Great Buddhist Priests' Zen Teachings) printed with movable metal type.
**Mangbuseok is a legendary stone that symbolized the grief and eternal waiting of a woman who turned to stone while waiting for her husband to return.
