One day at a busy airport, the passengers on a commercial airliner were seated waiting for the pilot to show up so they could get under way.

  The pilot and copilot finally appeared in the rear of the plane and began walking up to the cockpit through the center aisle. Both appeared to be blind; the pilot was using a white cane, bumping into passengers right and left as he stumbled down the aisle. The copilot was using a guide dog. Both had their eyes covered with sunglasses.

   At first, the passengers did not react, thinking that it must be some sort of practical joke. After a few minutes, though, the engines started revving, and the airplane moving down the runway.

The passengers looked at each other with some uneasiness. They started whispering among themselves and looked desperately to the stewardesses for reassurance.

   Yet, the plane started accelerating rapidly, and people began panicking. Some passengers were praying, and as the plane got closer and closer to the end of the runway, the voices were becoming more and more hysterical.

   When the plane had less then twenty feet of runway left, there was a sudden change in the pitch of the shouts as everyone screamed at once. At the very last moment, the plane lifted off and was airborne.

   Up in the cockpit, the copilot breathed a sigh of relief and told the pilot, "You know, one of these days the passengers aren’t going to scream, and we aren’t going to know when to take off!"

  어느 날 한 혼잡한 공항에서 민간 항공기를 탄 승객들은 자신을 데려가 줄 조종사가 나타나기를 기다리며 앉아 있었다.

  마침내 조종사와 부조종사가 비행기의 뒤쪽에서 나타나 중앙 통로를 통해 조종실로 걸어가기 시작했다. 그 둘은 맹인처럼 보였다; 조종사는 맹인용 흰 지팡이를 들고 좌우의 승객들과 부딪치면서 비틀거리며 통로를 따라 걸어갔다. 부조종사는 맹인 안내견의 도움을 받고 있었다. 또한 두 사람의 눈에는 선글라스를 쓰고 있었다.

  처음엔 승객들은 익살스러운 장난이라고 생각하여 아무런 반응을 보이지 않았다. 그러나 몇 분 후 엔진이 고속으로 회전하기 시작하며 비행기가 활주로를 따라 움직이기 시작했다. 승객들은 다소 불안한 마음에 서로를 바라보며 서로 수군거리다가 이젠 절박한 마음으로 승무원이 이 사실을 확인해주길 기대했다.

  그러나 비행기는 급히 속도를 높이기 시작하자 승객들은 당황하기 시작했다. 몇몇 승객들은 기도하기 시작했고 비행기가 활주로의 끝으로 점점 가까워지자 그 기도 소리는 점점 히스테리컬하게 변하였다.

  마침내 그 비행기가 활주로의 끝 지점에서부터 20피트쯤 채 남겨놓지 않았을 때 모든 승객의 고함 소리가 갑자기 비명 소리로 바뀌였다.  바로 그 순간 비행기는 이륙을 하였고 공중으로 날아 올랐다.

  조종석에서 부조종사는 안도의 한숨을 내쉬면서 조종사에게 말했다. "요즘엔 승객들이 비명을 잘 안질러 주네요. 그러다 보니 언제 이륙해야 할지 잘 모르겠어요."
