▣ The lmage :
Ciouds rise into the sky, representing "Xu"(Waiting).
Thus, the superior person eats, drinks, feasts and enjoys music to bide their time.
[Explanation]
The lmage says : Rain clouds covering the sky represent Xu(Waiting).
The superior person should(when seen by others) eat, drink, host feasts, and make merry,
making it appear as though they are simply waiting for the right moment.
[Commentary]
Rain clouds covering the sky mean that the rain has not yet moistened the earth.
Therefore, just as one waits for rain until the time is ripe,
a superior person must know how to wait while nurturing both mind and body.
Clouds rising into the sky must wait for the harminy of Yin and Yang(陰陽,음양) before
becoming rain; simply being in the sky does not automatically turn them into rain.
Hence, one must wait for the harmony of Yin and Yang.
Currently, the energies of Yin and Yang between heaven and earth have not communed,
resulting in no rain(不雨,불우).
This is like a superior person who has cultivated talent and virtue(才德,재덕)
but has not yet gained an opportunity to bestow them.
Thus, seeing the image of Xu-hua(the imagery of impending rain),
the superior person should wait until the rain falls completely, sharing food and drink,
while harmonizing internal intent with the surroundings[飮食宴樂,음식연락].
Even in waiting, there is dignity and refined composure.
A wise person waits while maintaining self-restraint and etiquette,
Whereas an unvirtuous person ruins time and themselves by falling into drunkenness,
luxury, and hedonism.
However, figures like Yi Yin(이윤), Fu Yue(부열), An Ying(안영), and Zhuge Liang(제갈량)
were wise men.
All of this is a call to wait for Heaven's will(천명) and strictly adhere to 居易俟命(거이사명-
Geu-i-sa-myeong)―dwelling in safety and waiting for destiny while following
the natural principles of the world.
Laozi's concept of '上善若水(상선약수 , Sang-seon-yak-su)'(the highest goodness is like water)
is also ane such philosophy for living in the world.
The following is a passage written by Choe Hang(최항),
the Chief State Councillor of the Joseon Dynasty, presented to King Sejo regarding
the "Way of Feasting and Festivity"(宴樂之道,연락지도) :
"When the rain and clouds(需雲,수운) first come together, we respond with songs,
play music, and plan grand strategies once more.
Giving pure sincerity(赤心,적심) to ane another allows us to know the mind od Heaven;
preserving the beginning and the end lies solely in reverence.
It is never easy to refrain from overflowing or falling into danger,
but as long as one is neither arrogant nor negligent, there will be nothing to beware of."
Here, 需雲(수운, Su-un) refers to the food and feasting(宴樂,연락)
that a king bestows as a banquet.
In this way, 需(수, Su) represents a situation where rain(雨,우) is just about to pour from
the sky(而,이), meaning it is better not to venture outside right now,
but rather to take time for self-cultivation and nurturing oneself(蒙養,몽양 - Mong-yang).
"If you try to rush the process of self- cultivation(蒙養,몽양 - Mong-yang),
it will be like pulling up sprouts to help them grow (助苗,조묘);
thus, you must wait for the right conditions and affinity of that era.
When the right time arrives, its truth will naturally reveal itself.
It is precious only to ensure that the seedd of truth ripens into rlghteous fruit
Therefore, if one waits for the right time, one will surely cross the great river of life
and death(生死大川,생사대천) and ascend to the other shore(彼岸,피안),
the ultimate place of happiness known as Supreme Nirvana(究竟涅槃,구경열반)."
Asd explained in these profound words, Mencius's warning against '揠苗(알묘 - Al-myo)'
( pulling up sprouts to force growth) serves as a great lesson in waiting
for Heaven's mandate.
