Today is the day to meet friends, so I bathed and got myself ready.
Of course, I didn’t have to, but it’s a good excuse to freshen up.
It’s about time I cleaned my sticky scalp and shaved with a razor anyway. Maybe it’s the placebo effect, but since I started taking this Vita D — extracted from New Zealand green-lipped mussels, at a whopping 17,500 mg — my finger joints feel more flexible.
I should have left early to get to Yeongdeungpo Station, but after bathing, running the washing machine, and hanging the laundry, I ended up leaving late. Today I finally figured it out: the subway ride from Incheon to Bupyeong takes 1 hour and 10 minutes.
But from Bupyeong, if you take the express train to Yongsan, it only takes 30 minutes to reach Yeongdeungpo.
I was grateful that Gwang-deogi, who I thought wouldn’t make it because of his health, came after all. He knows a lot about Chinese cuisine, and thanks to him we had a delicious meal.
I ate sweet-and-sour pork, scorched rice soup, jjajangmyeon, and also chicken “Yurin-gi.”
(Yurin-gi: crispy fried chicken topped with a sweet-and-sour soy sauce, giving it a refreshing taste.)
I was especially happy that even Gwang-deogi, who didn’t have much of an appetite lately, enjoyed the food. I was surprised to hear about his condition — he lost 6 kilograms, and it really showed. Just like on Dr. House, where small blood clots or hidden “parasites” can disrupt the body’s system, it reminded me how health issues can creep up silently.
The “three pleasures” of old age — eating well, sleeping well, and excreting well — are basic yet difficult tasks. On the train, I couldn’t get a seat and had to hang onto the strap like a ragdoll, which left me exhausted. Still, the rhythmic thunder of the wheels on the tracks was pleasant to my ears. Traveling really is enjoyable…
It would’ve been nicer without so many old folks in front of me, though. There weren’t many young faces today — maybe I’m just too fixated on the priority seats for the elderly. Anyway, it’s always good to meet friends.
If I didn’t see them, I’d probably just stay home like in a monastery, watching YouTube until the day I die. Maybe so.
