My fellow Korean citizens! Aren’t you ashamed to the 12 American officers and 35 crew of the 10,000-ton Meredith Victory, who risked their lives to rescue 14,000 Korean refugees? How about you, Mr. Roh, Chung, Kim, and other followers?
As I wrote in my last message, the New York Times published an article implying that S. Korea has given up its constitutional responsibility for fear of spreading black clouds over “Sunshine Policy.” In fact, the Roh’s regime has tried to keep DJ’s sunshine policy free of clouds at the cost of justice, freedom, and truth. Thus, to many Americans, S. Korea is no more an independent free country and is no more a true allied country, since S. Korea discards the highest values that a country should hold for its existence.
The NY Times also pointed out that under bills, now in the National Assembly, S. Koreans would be allowed to freely access N. Korean Web sites and to travel to N. Korea. S. Korea’s official defense papers would no longer describe N Korea as the man enemy. Many Americans believe that S. Korea will fall to the evil regime of Kim Jong IL if other bills would end national security laws banning advocacy of North Korea’s Communist system.
And then, the New York Times completely drives S. Korea to the corner by publishing what it has not been published in Korea:
“When the North called South Korean officials "wicked terrorists" for airlifting 468 North Korean defectors from Vietnam to Seoul, the South promised not to do it again.”
My Dear S. Koreans. At first time, I could not believe my eyes the line saying:
“THE SOUTH PROMISED NOT TO DO IT AGAIN.”
Promise not to do it again? Oh, my goodness!!
This article continues only to finally put S. Korea into a manure pail by adding the following shameful lines:
“Although South Korea has admitted only 5,000 North Koreans during the last half century, Chung Dong Young, the South's unification minister, asked the private groups that were helping the North Koreans to stop.”
After the article was published that the unification minister, Chung Dong-Young, a strong Presidential candidate in the next election, asked the private groups, who were helping the North Korean defectors running away from the people’s paradise and arriving at Seoul, to stop, many Korean-Americans were stunned and speechless, because they could see the dark tunnel waiting for their homeland.
Minister Chung not only threw away his responsibility for rescuing his own people from the evil regime, but also deserted his own miserable people and asked his own people to give up doing the righteous things. Well, sorry to say, but Mr. Chung, you showed what you really are, a tool for an evil man, by asking those private groups to stop helping our poor North Korean brothers.
You simply sold your soul and your body to such a horrible human-butcher, Kim Jong Il who made more than 3 million N. Korean brothers and sisters to be starved to death, while he enjoys all kinds of delicacies. What a shameful man you are, Mr. Chung!
We all really want you to read the following tale that you might be already aware of. After you read it, just compare you, Mr. Kim Geun Tae, and other Roh’s followers with the 12 American officers and 35 crew of the 10,000-ton Meredith Victory. They risked their lives to rescue 14,000 Korean refugees and their operation is still called in America the great rescue operation in maritime history.
Would Mr. Chung possibly believe that a ship with space for only 12 passengers carried 14,000 refugees? That is a miracle of love you would not easily believe. I already knew this story, but after I read it again, I could not stop my tears. Where are those 14000 refugees saved by the Meredith Victory now. When the US armed forces are withdrawing from S. Korea due to Roh and his followers’ anti-America movement, why are they so quiet? Were they all already dead?
Mr. Chung Dong Young! In order to understand which side, God’s side or Satan’s side, you do belong to, read carefully this story and accept what your clear conscience tells you. Not only you and your colleagues, but also Koreans should realize the reason why God is turning His face away from Korea. How can you expect any blessings and grace from God while you are giving up doing the righteous things in God’s eyes?
Oh, my God. Help S. Korea not give up our poor N, Korean defectors and our miserable N. Korean people under Kim Jong Il’s despotic rule, as the 12 American officers and 35 crews almost 50 years ago never gave up poor 14000 Korean refugees in a very cold winter night.
In His name,
Jay (Dr. H)
A SHIP WITH SPACE FOR 12 PASSENGERS
CARRIED 14,000 REFUGEES IN THE KOREAN WAR.
It figures that few know the story of what's been dubbed the greatest rescue operation in maritime history. It is, after all, the forgotten rescue in the forgotten battle of the forgotten war.
The tale of the SS Meredith Victory has popped up now and again, but is largely unknown to most Americans - even those who served alongside the men who carried out the perilous mission during the Korean War, at the height of the Cold War, in the winter of 1950.
SS Meredith Victory
On a frigid Dec. 22, the small crew of an American freighter, as part of a mass civilian evacuation, herded 14,000 North Korean refugees aboard a ship designed to carry only 12 passengers. They didn't speak English and had no idea whether the enemy Americans would usher them to safety or abandon them at sea.
Those who stayed at Hungnam would face death. The nearing North Korean and Chinese forces had vowed to behead any civilian.
The vessel crossed through a floating mine field and finally reached a South Korean island on Christmas Day, only after being turned away from Pusan the night before. All of the passengers, cramped in unsanitary conditions and thirsting for a first taste of water in three days, survived.
Somehow the trip was eclipsed by other stories from the front, and fears that the so-called police action would erupt into World War III. Even former White House Chief of Staff Alexander Haig, a young Army captain who played an instrumental role in the evacuation, knew very littile about the ship's role. The Meredith Victory is "a story that virtually no one knows and no one knew except perhaps some archivists at the Defense Department," said Bruce Carlton, acting administrator of the U.S. Maritime Administration.
The government, through his agency, has declared the event "the greatest rescue operation by a single ship in the history of mankind."
"It is a story that will truly make anybody proud," said Bill Gilbert, 70, a Rockville resident and former newspaper reporter who recently published the first and only book detailing the perilous voyage. "I was proud to be an American when I heard about this story, and when I started researching it and writing it . . . She was a ship of miracles."
"
Mr. Gilbert's book, "Ship of Miracles" (Triumph Books), is responsible for bringing the adventure into prominence 50 years later. And the author, a former public information officer for the Washington Council of Governments, never actually intended to write it.
Mr. Gilbert, himself a Korean War veteran who served in the Air Force, approached the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee for help in writing a book about the Chosin Reservoir campaign, in which tens of thousands of Chinese soldiers bombarded U.S. units and forced a massive retreat.
Jean Mansavage, a member of the committee, instead told him about a mission that no one has written about in any depth.
"We think it's a story that should be told more expansively," said J. Robert Lunney, 73, a White Plains, N.Y., trial lawyer who served as staff officer aboard the Meredith Victory. "War is to effect a humanitarian result. It's not just to kill people and collect real estate."
Not long after the war broke out on June 25, 1950, the 12 officers and 35 crew of the 10,000-ton Meredith Victory left Norfolk on a mission to carry supplies - mostly ammunition, tanks and trucks - between Japan and Korea. The ship provided supplies during the famous battle at Inchon.
But six months into the war, "we were in full retreat, and America and the rest of the world were scared stiff about what the Korean War might be leading us in to." Mr. Gilbert said.
The Chinese had come to the aid of the North Korean Communists in their war against South Korea, even after Gen. Douglas MacArthur had assured President Harry S Truman they would not.
The Meredith Victory, carrying about 500 tons of jet fuel, was ordered to the harbor at Hungnam in North Korea, 135 miles into enemy territory. Nearly 100,000 North Korean refugees had gathered on the beach at the Sea of Japan, desperate the escape the narrowing perimeter and the advancing 120,000 North Korean and Chinese soldiers. The Communists, suspecting that the North Korean people were helping the enemy, didn't hesitate to kill them.
"I trained my binoculars on the shore and saw a pitiable scene," the ship's captain, Leonard LaRue, once wrote, as quoted in Mr. Gilbert's book.
"Korean refugees thronged the docks. With them was everything they could wheel, carry or drag. Beside them, like frightened chicks, were their children." Said junior engineer Merl Smith: "It was utter chaos on the shoreline. You wouldn't believe the mass of people."
As the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry held off the attackers, several Army leaders approached Capt. LaRue about taking on the refugees. They were to be evacuated after the 100,000 U.N. forces, who had been forced to retreat from the Chosin Reservoir.
"He didn't ask questions," Mr. Lunney said of the captain. "He was just a man of action, of great Christian devotion."
If Capt. LaRue had lost the ship, its crew and passengers during that mission, the captain probably would have been able to "face his Maker and know he did the right thing," Mr. Lunney added. The captain, incidentally, went on to become a monk and now lives in Newton, N.J., at age 87.
The Meredith Victory, one of 193 ships gathered in the harbor at the same time, began loading its new cargo - mostly old men, women and infants - in the afternoon, continued into the night and finished in the morning.
"We were more of a cargo ship. We had no passenger accommodations," Mr. Lunney said. "We loaded them in the holds of the ship. . . . We just stacked all these people in there."
One by one, refugees crowded into five holds. When one hold was full, the crew closed the hatch board and began loading up another hold.
Some passengers brought furnishings, even musicial instruments. But the crew allowed only food, water and clothing. Mothers and boys barely in their teens had babies strapped to their backs. Men did too, and some carried a child in each arm.
"They were just so stoic. You didn't see them crying, you didn't see them yelling," said Mr. Smith, 73, now a retired marketing manager living in Valatie, N.Y.
All the while, the USS Missouri, four destroyers, two heavy cruisers and four rocket ships fired over their heads at the enemy.
"It was a port engulfed in fire, with napalming and bombardment," Mr. Lunney said. No one was left on the beach the morning of Dec. 23, at least not anyone in sight, Mr. Lunney recalled. The crew counted 14,000 passengers.
With no mine detection equipment, the vessel headed out to sea through 30 miles of "one of the heaviest mine fields in the history of naval warfare," Mr. Gilbert said.
"We had no doctor, no heat. No interpreter, no lighting in the holds," Mr. Lunney said.
"The only gun on the ship was a pistol carried by the captain," Mr. Gilbert said.
On the deck, the refugees standing shoulder to shoulder suffered freezing temperatures. Below, they could barely breathe because of the poor ventilation.
"They went to the bathroom right where they stood," Mr. Smith said. "There was nowhere else for them to go."
At one point, Mr. Smith opened a cabin portal to offer some refugees some water, but so many hands reached through that he needed help closing it. Mr. Lunney, during another part of the trip, was told the passengers were lighting fires on top of the fuel drums to keep warm, something he quickly squelched.
"As Captain LaRue said later, what has been called the greatest rescue operation by a single ship in the history of mankind could have become the greatest disaster,"Mr. Gilbert said.
Rumors, meanwhile, began spreading on board. Some thought the Americans were going to drop an atomic bomb on the Meredith Victory. Other believed the Americans were going to shoot the refugees, or make them jump in the water.
"The only thing they knew was they were getting away from North Korea, from the harsh Communist dictatorship," Mr. Gilbert said. "They had been punished, especially the Catholics."
On Dec. 24, the Meredith Victory arrived in Pusan.
"They were told on Christmas Eve that there was no room for them," Mr. Gilbert said. "And the ship's captain said in later years, `I was reminded of the first Christmas Eve when there was no room for them.'"
The crew pulled up anchor and headed farther south, ending up at a small island called Koje Do. They gradually unloaded the passengers in LSTs - including the five babies born during the voyage.
The crew "discharged all of this human cargo without the loss of a single life, and that's why, for obvious reasons, I call my book `Ship of Miracles,'" Mr. Gilbert said.
"The captain has even said in several interviews in the years afterwards, that there's no logical explanation why a ship this small could be forced to carry 14,000 human beings. There's no explanation for why she could sail through this heavy mine field with no mine detection equipment and not hit one.
"There's no explanation for why the Korean people, as stoic as they are, were able to stand virtually motionless and in silence. . . . This truly was a Christmas miracle."
The foreword of Mr. Gilbert's book has a statement from Mr. Haig that reads: "I am proud to have been a part of what happened at Hungnam. Fifty years later, I am proud to be a part of the telling of that heroic story."

혹시 이 기적의 항해 (MIRACLE OF A VOYAGE) 예기를 아셨던지요.
