South Korea's fallen star of science publicly apologized for wrong doing at his laboratory of Seoul National University. Professor Hwang accepted the blame for fake claims in two landmark papers on embryonic stem cells and apologized but he blamed the deceit on colleagues and insisted his team of researchers is still the best in the world.
Hwang's resignation dented hopes that stem cell research could produce cures for severe spinal code injuries and even Parkinson's Disease. He become a hero for many South Koreans and a recipient of government support. But he is now the focus of an investigation.
His supporters demonstrated outside the professor's news conference, demanding report his case fairly. The hero is now fighting for more than his reputation. Local reports said obtaining state funds fraudulently could be punished by up to ten years in prison.
