In the *I Ching* (Book of Changes), the fifteenth of the sixty-four hexagrams is *Di Shan Qian* (Earth over Mountain, or "Humility"). It is the hexagram I favor most. It represents a mountain that does not act like a mountain; it possesses height yet does not boast of it, embodying true humility.
Among all the hexagrams in the *I Ching*, this is the unique one where the texts for every single line (*yaoci*) are generally auspicious.
Regarding the first line (*Chu-liu*) of the *Qian* (Humility) hexagram:
"As the morning gate opens, the rising sun shines upon the mountain entrance;
By humbling oneself and cultivating inner virtue, one finds peace of body and smooth progress in all affairs."
In the past, noble households would open their main gates early in the morning to welcome good fortune. They would often brush-paint the phrase "Opening the gate brings ten thousand blessings" (*Gaemun Manbokrae*) and display it on the gate.
When the first line (*Chu-liu*) changes, it transforms into the *Di Huo Ming Yi* hexagram (Earth over Fire, or "Darkening of the Light"). This signifies a traveler’s footsteps leading into the mountains. Because the world outside is shrouded in darkness, retreating into the mountains for spiritual cultivation is a wise course of action. While this state may be inauspicious for the petty person (*xiaoren*), for the noble person (*junzi*), it is a time of self-cultivation as a recluse. Why is the day so dark? Floating clouds have veiled the sky.
Having gone without food for three days, one's movements are hindered.
It depicts a bleak plight—starving for days in a dark hiding place amidst the chaos of upheaval. It also reflects the state of the world during the Great Transformation.
Regarding the Six-Two line:
The *jun-ja* (noble person) who acts in accord with the times spreads his fragrance across the world without the need for wind;
The virtue he has accumulated is profound.
Even as the noble person sits within his room, his fragrance fills the world. Like a powerful light, his energy illuminates the region as if it were broad daylight.
When the Six-Two line changes, the hexagram transforms into *Di-Feng-Sheng* (Earth Rising).
It is named "Dragon Gate" (Long-men); one begins in humble status but rises to greatness,
And as the wise minister meets the sovereign, his aspirations shine anew.
It is a favorable time for the traveler to go anywhere. As a lifelong wanderer, my heart is constantly hurried and impatient; yet, lacking a companion with whom I can share a true meeting of minds, I rise each morning, spend the day in activity, and greet the night with an empty heart. Nevertheless, the time will soon come when I wield the creative power of Heaven and Earth through the divine authority of Jiang Ziya (Kang Taegong).
Regarding the Nine-Three line:
"A mountain lies within the earth; though low, it ascends. The noble man sees things through to the end, and the man of spirit attains glory."
The movement of the Nine-Three line transforms the hexagram into *Kun* (The Receptive/Earth):
"A mountain lies within the earth; it harbors inner brilliance. A woman conceives a noble child; ultimately, there shall be great success."
The wanderer’s path lies upon a broad, smooth highway.
Before the Master of *Mogu-dang* (The Hall of Herding the Ox) reached his sixtieth birthday, he had never dared to even imagine a journey abroad; yet, through the grace of Heaven and divine assistance, he has traveled across fifty-one countries over the past fifteen years. This signifies the destiny of the "Fifteen True Lords" (Sib-o Jinju) and embodies the meaning of the *Gyeom* (Humility) hexagram (Earth over Mountain).
Regarding the fourth line (Line 4):
Occupying the position with the nature of *Yin* (yieldingness), practicing humility brings benefit;
Parting the clouds to see the moon ensures that a joyous event will surely arrive.
It signifies a destiny where, through the principle that matters inevitably return to righteousness, sweetness follows bitterness.
When the fourth line changes, it transforms into the *Xiao Guo* (Small Preponderance) hexagram;
Though in a time of "Small Preponderance," what is there to worry about if one does not rashly advance?
Yet, remaining there indefinitely would also amount to rigidity—a lack of flexibility.
Regarding the fifth line (Line 5):
Not seeking to be wealthy alone but sharing with neighbors, one gains renown through the use of wealth;
Engaging through love, friends and the masses gather in submission.
It signifies attaining the authority to lead the world according to one's will, and possessing the divine power to ensure that all people become prosperous and peaceful. When the fifth line of the *Qian* (Humility) hexagram changes, it transforms into the *Jian* (Obstruction) hexagram (Water over Mountain).
The waning moon becomes full again, and amidst great obstruction, a friend arrives;
Though one faces adversity, by maintaining the moderation of the Golden Mean, a myriad difficulties resolve themselves.
Even in a state of obstruction (*Jian*), because the position is central and correct (*Zhongzheng*), the waning moon returns to fullness; thus, amidst great obstruction, a friend comes to help.
It is said that when one is in a dire predicament, a friend arrives to offer assistance, and by maintaining moderation (*Zhongjie*) amidst adversity, all difficulties naturally resolve. Even if life is impoverished or difficult, if one upholds one's integrity through the Way of the Golden Mean, all hardships will naturally be dispelled.
Regarding the top line (*Shangliu*):
A traveler far from home—his heart is straight as an arrow.
It is said of this line that he has not yet achieved his aim.
He is a traveler ten thousand *li* away, with a heart as straight as an arrow; yet, it is said of this line that he fails to realize his ambition. When the top line (Sang-yuk) moves, the hexagram transforms into *Jung-san-gan* (Double Mountain/Stillness), representing the summit of a mountain.
As one returns from the stone fortress, a benefactor looks upon them with care;
With harmony prevailing between those above and below,
Cheers of joy rise high.
A person's true character is revealed when facing an extremely difficult reality; it is then that one's genuine inner spirit is exposed. A person who is pleasant only under favorable conditions but scowls, loses their temper, and resorts to deceit when circumstances are poor is a useless human being.
Those who have no place in this world are not truly human but mere refuse; the Divine Judgment and Great Transformation (*Gaebyeok*) involve the spirits of Heaven and Earth eliminating such beings. It may seem cold, but this is the fundamental principle of the universe.
Even one who is humble can transform into a demon if they succumb to arrogance and conceit; such a change of heart leads only to a futile and wasted life.
It is a time when Heaven and Earth employ only those individuals who are truly essential. A life that makes no difference—one that is neither here nor there—serves no purpose in the great affairs of the world. Humility is the foundation of character. A humble person respects both fellow human beings and the Divine. To be respected by the Divine is to possess the stature of a true being. This teaches that faith arises from humility, a spirit of reverence is stirred by deep faith, and one becomes a follower of Heaven’s will through the expression of utmost sincerity.

"Al abrirse la puerta matutina, el sol naciente ilumina la entrada de la montaña;
El *Jun-ja* (persona noble) que actúa en armonía con los tiempos difunde su fragancia por el mundo sin necesidad de viento;
Bajo el nombre de "Puerta del Dragón" (*Yongmun*), uno transita de un estado humilde a uno noble;
Al no buscar la riqueza para uno mismo, sino compartirla con los vecinos, se gana renombre mediante el uso de dicha riqueza;
La luna menguante vuelve a llenarse y, en medio de una gran obstrucción, llega un amigo;
Es un viajero lejos de casa cuyo corazón es recto como una flecha; esta línea indica que aún no ha realizado sus aspiraciones. Cuando la línea superior (*Sang-yuk*) cambia, el hexagrama se transforma en *Jung-san-gan* (Doble Montaña/Inmovilidad), representando la cima de una montaña. Al regresar de la fortaleza de piedra, un benefactor los contempla con benevolencia;
