Grand Funk Railroad

그랜드 펑크 레일로드(Grand Funk Railroad)는
1970년대 영국세에 밀린 미국 하드록의 자존심을 지킨 밴드였다.

이들의 넘버 원 싱글인 ‘We’re an American band’라는
제목에서도 알 수 있듯 두둑한 배짱을 바탕으로

자신들이 미국 밴드임을 내세워 
브리티시 하드록 그룹들과 차별성을 두었으며, 

음악적으로도 가장 미국적이라 할 수 있는
블루스와 부기우기 스타일을 하드록에 접목시켜 
스트레이트하면서도 우수에 찬 멜로디를 주조해냈다.

1960년대 후반 미시건 주(州)에서 
라디오를 진행하던 DJ 테리 나이트(Terry Knight)가
조직한 로컬 밴드 더 팩(The Pack)에서 

함께 활동한 
마크 파너(Mark Farner/기타)와 돈 브루어(Don Brewer/드럼), 

그리고 1966년 ‘96 tears’로 
빌보드 싱글 차트 정상을 차지한 밴드 

퀘스천마크 앤 더 미스테이란스
(And The Mysterians)에서 

베이스를 담당했던 멜 샤커(Mel Schacher)의
트리오 체제로 출발한 팀이 그랜드 펑크 레일로드였고, 

이들의 시발점이 될 수 있는 계기를 만들어 준 
테리 나이트는 이후, 
이들의 매니저로 활약했다.
