Do you know about weathercasters? Most people think of ‘weathercaster’ as only a woman’s job. However, there is weather man that has made his own way with confidence. He is very stylish, satisfied with his job and has challenged his mind. Let’s feel his passionate mind. |
▪▪ You worked as an announcer in the National Assembly. What did you do at that time?
I broadcasted the program ‘Headline Legislative News’ in the National Assembly five years ago. As well as being a weathercaster here, I have a live broadcast on RTN (Real Estate Television Network) and preside over the jazz concert at Gwanghwamun KT Olleh Square each week. I am trying to broaden the scope of activities to being an instructor of speech communication, a sports caster and a professional emcee. My dream was originally to be an announcer, so I’m working as an MBC weathercaster through the university broadcast announcer and National Assembly television. Being a weathercaster is very appealing. These days, the importance of environment and climate is growing bigger and bigger. I think being a weathercaster is a good infrastructure for the long run as a broadcaster with specialization. I’m gratifi ed with the result. However, except for the major three broadcasting companies MBC, SBS and KBS, other companies have poor work environments. A weathercaster belongs to the newsroom and needs a reporter’s mind. As with other news reporters, I cover the Meteorological Administration or the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration, and I write descriptions and radio news articles. I make materials into fi gures with graphs and temperatures for broadcast, and then the graphic designer changes then to fi t the screen with a sleek design. In conclusion, I perform a role as producer, reporter and announcer on the TV weather news.
I have pride in being the only male weathercaster, but in fact, it is diffi cult. When I delivered the news smoothly like a female weathercaster, I was pointed out as being very buttery, so I returned to a sports news tone. Once, when it rained, I wore a yellow raincoat. However, people around me said my costume was too casual, so I hanged to a trench coat. My coordinator had a hard time. ▪▪ How did your experience at the UBS (University Broadcasting Station) in CBNU affect your job?
It was a valuable experience to me because I love broadcasting and using a microphone. The interview for being accepted to CBNU UBS, the spring days when I ran to prepare for the broadcast festival, the seniors who educated me… everything is still alive in my mind. Over ten years have passed since then. I still keep the educational materials that I was taught with. I received help from those data and my experiences to make speech teaching materials. When I teach in academies and universities, it serves as foundation. UBS life was hard, but worthwhile and happy.
▪▪ To be an announcer, what do you think students should do to prepare in the University?
If you have a good mental attitude and disposition, it appears in your look, voice, and attitude. A correct pronunciation and vocalization are also essential factors; however, nowadays many people have them. You need to bring something extra. It is a sensitive code that arouses sympathy from viewers when you announce and write. You should read viewers’ minds. Don’t be a smooth talker – be a broadcaster of sensitive mind. He is the most prominent junior I've ever seen. And he makes me surprised for knowing that local students can overcome any obstacles over them. I'm pretty much proud of him, furthermore, I applaud to his effort, talent, devotion in the middle of his proceeding.
