▣ First Line(Nine at the beginning) : Waiting in the outskirts.
It is beneficial to maintain constancy(perseverance). No blame.
[Explanation]
[Initial Nine] Wait out in the countryside(performing sacred rituals).
Maintaining a steadfast and constant heart brings advantage,
and only then will there be no fault or misfortune.
[Commentary]
Ya/plain)' is relatively close to the village,
while '郊(교, Gyo/Outskirts)'refers to a place far away from inhabited areas.
Waiting out in the distant suburbs while holding sacred rituals [需于郊,수우교 -Su-u-gyo]
keeps one from getting entangled in worldly dispute
Maintaining an unchanging heart [利用恒,이용항 - I-yong-hang]
leaves no room for blame or fault [无咎,무구].
Doing so ensures that "wherever or whenever you go,
you will not lose the proper way / principle [未失常也,미실항야 - Mi-sil-hang-ya]."
This urges one to remain in seclusion, hold firm to integrity, and wait for the right timing.
It serves as a warning to avoid danger from afar and refrain from acting recklessly.
It indicates that by avoiding foolish pursuits and preserving integrity,
one stays free from harm―thus, keeping a steadfast mind(恒心,항심) is key remaining
on the proper path(常道,상도).
In the Xu hexagram(需卦,수괘), the ones who set traps and entice you are Line 4
and the Top Line[上六,상육].
Although Line 4 is your natural match, it fails to wait for you and instead dallies
with the vigorous Line 3 below, while flirting with Line 5 above,
who holds immense power and wealth.
Naturally, humble and madest [Initial Nine] is completely ignored.
Therefore, from the perspective of [Initial Nine] (you),
the best strategy is simply to wait until your counterpart(Line 4) returns.
Cheng Yi(정자) : Noted that [Initial Nine] is located farthest from the pit of danger
(the Kan 坎(감) hexagram), allowing one to maintain composure and self-preservation
(安靜自守,안정자수) without facing hardship.
Dasan Jeong Yak-yong(다산) : Interpreted '郊(교, Gyo)' as offering sacrifices to Heaven,
viewing this as the time when King Wu of Zhou waited for Heaven's mandate
in the outskirts of the Shang Dynasty.
Preserving the constant path (常道,상도) means holding onto one's original identity.
The scholar Ji-uk(지욱) viewed this as a state of waiting where one refrains from engaging
in battle against inner worldly afflictions and illusions
