[Photo fwd: Aug. 25] The purified Netgiliso
Because of the storms and rains in recent days, the Netgiriso, the sacred water source of Gangjeong has been purified. Recently it suffered from algae of which the cause was suspected due to the naval base construction (destruction) which included the careless blast of the Gureombi Rock in Spring. The spring water underneath the Gureombi Rock is thought to be linked to this water source of the Gangjeong stream which feeds the 70 % drinking water of the citizens in the Seogwipo City area, the southern half of the Jeju Island.
‘Netgiliso is the water source (*‘so’ means something like a 'marsh') of the Gangjeong stream. It was named because the four(‘Net’) of the fall, rock cliff, sweet fish and clean water are good(‘gil'’). People can often see the mandarin duck and sea ducks here. There is a Netgiliso Dang (a sacred place according to the Korean shaman tradition) where a giant Elaeocarpus sylvestris var. ellipticus (* please let me know if you know the simple English words), probably the 2nd oldest tree in Korea still exists as the ‘God tree' (Gangjeong village/ Korean Federation of Environment Movement of Jeju)’
