복음 말씀은 귀먹고 말 더듬는 이를 고치시는 예수님의 모습입니다. 주님께서는 당신 손가락을 그의 귀에 넣으십니다. 그러시고는 침을 발라 그의 혀에 손을 대셨습니다. 왜 이렇게 하셨을까요? 한마디 말씀만으로도 얼마든지 고치실 수 있는 분이 아니시던가요?

한 어린아이가 물고기를 키웠습니다. 어느 날 물고기가 죽자 아이는 울기 시작했습니다. 대부분의 어른들은 이렇게 말합니다. “괜찮아. 울지 마라! 또 물고기 사 줄게.” 이것은 돈으로 해결하려는 모습입니다. 하지만 아이는 물고기와의 이별을 슬퍼하고 있습니다. 그러므로 그의 슬픔에 먼저 동참해야 합니다.

“물고기가 죽어 우는구나. 그래 참 안됐다. 엄마랑 함께 묻어 주자.” 이러한 말에 아이는 위로받습니다. 아픈 감정의 치유를 배우는 것이지요. 슬픔이 없으면 인간은 쉽게 교만해집니다. 예수님께서는 귀먹고 말 더듬는 이의 아픔을 같이하셨습니다. 그래서 그러한 행동을 취하셨던 것입니다. 예수님의 넓고 따뜻한 마음입니다.

‘에파타!’는 ‘열려라!’라는 뜻이라고 성경은 해석하고 있습니다. 말씀 한마디에 그 사람은 입이 열리고 귀가 뚫렸습니다. 제자들은 너무 놀랐던 것이지요. 그러기에 예수님의 입에서 나온 말씀을 ‘발음 그대로’ 적어 놓은 것입니다.

Reading 1
Gn 3:1-8

Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals
that the LORD God had made.
The serpent asked the woman,
"Did God really tell you not to eat
from any of the trees in the garden?"
The woman answered the serpent:
"We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden;
it is only about the fruit of the tree
in the middle of the garden that God said,
'You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.'"
But the serpent said to the woman:
"You certainly will not die!
No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it
your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods
who know what is good and what is evil."
The woman saw that the tree was good for food,
pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom.
So she took some of its fruit and ate it;
and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her,
and he ate it.
Then the eyes of both of them were opened,
and they realized that they were naked;
so they sewed fig leaves together
and made loincloths for themselves.
When they heard the sound of the LORD God moving about in the garden
at the breezy time of the day,
the man and his wife hid themselves from the LORD God
among the trees of the garden.

R. (1a) Blessed are those whose sins are forgiven.
Blessed is he whose fault is taken away,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt,
in whose spirit there is no guile.

my guilt I covered not.
I said, "I confess my faults to the LORD,"
and you took away the guilt of my sin.

Gospel
Mk 7:31-37

Jesus left the district of Tyre
and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,
into the district of the Decapolis.
And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment
and begged him to lay his hand on him.
He took him off by himself away from the crowd.
He put his finger into the man's ears
and, spitting, touched his tongue;
then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him,
" Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be opened!")
And immediately the man's ears were opened,
his speech impediment was removed,
and he spoke plainly.
He ordered them not to tell anyone.
But the more he ordered them not to,
the more they proclaimed it.
They were exceedingly astonished and they said,
"He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."
