Although the Hawaii guide had been concerned about the forecast of rain and wind, the clouds and blue sky have harmonized perfectly, creating a cool and pleasant atmosphere rather than a hot one.
The first stop was the national cemetery, the resting place for those who lost their lives in conflicts such as the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Korean War; at first glance, it simply looks like a beautiful park.
It does not look like a typical cemetery from the outside, as one must look down to see the flat headstones set flush with the ground. Deeming it a fitting place for a ritual to soothe spirits and guide them to the afterlife, I first offer a silent prayer. It is located at the Punchbowl Crater, situated on high ground 120 meters above sea level.
It stands in the middle of the Pacific, presiding over the vast ocean.
Life here is shaped by the interplay of fire and water; the land rose from beneath the tropical ocean waves through volcanic eruptions, forming an archipelago of various islands. First, Hawaii’s land is cradled by the ocean; the interplay between water and fire makes the weather unpredictable. A typhoon struck just before I arrived. A distinctive feature here is the frequent appearance of rainbows—a result of the harmonious balance between water and fire.
Second, the mountains resemble flames. With so much fiery energy, the landscape is naturally magnificent.
Third, abundant rainfall and a climate that feels like summer all year round foster lush vegetation. Reflecting the unpredictable weather, the trees grow in unique and striking shapes, and flowers bloom and fade throughout the year.
Fourth, diverse ethnic groups live together here. Consequently, there is no room for white supremacy; it is a part of the United States that is free from racial discrimination. Originally, this land did not belong to the United States; it is a place where democratic capitalism usurped the kingdom that once existed there.
Fifth, it is a region defined by military bases; military personnel and their families account for 20% of the population.
Sixth, the population is concentrated on the island of Honolulu, among the various islands.
Seventh, influenced by the destiny of the "Era of Resolving Grievances" (Haewon-sidae), what was once the most underdeveloped land has transformed into a valuable area through modernization and urbanization. However, development is slow, and the internet is sluggish; the pace of life is frustratingly slow—in some respects, it lags behind Korea.
Hawaii was the first destination for Korean immigrants to the United States. Koreans there transitioned from agricultural work to commerce and eventually diversified into a wide range of professions.
Next, I visited the palace park where the statue of the first king of the Hawaiian Kingdom—known as the "God of War"—stands. I visited a mystical place featuring a single Bodhi tree whose branches had sent roots down into the earth to form multiple pillar-like trunks, creating the appearance of a forest of many trees. Standing there, I came to understand the significance of Shakyamuni sitting in meditation beneath the Bodhi tree.
