On the third day, we took a domestic flight (departing at 8:55 AM) to a neighboring island. It is the largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago. It is known as the "Big Island," is home to Mauna Kea—the highest peak in the chain—and is the island that actually bears the name "Hawaii."
Oahu, where Honolulu is located, is similar in size to Jeju Island but has a much larger population; it is home to approximately 100,000 people, representing 70% of the archipelago's total population. With so many cars, the relatively well-developed roads are packed with traffic.
This place is said to be the birthplace of surfing, as the waves roll in perfectly for the sport.
Among the 137 islands, there are 19 major volcanic islands—corresponding to the grid pattern of a Go board—and 8 inhabited islands, corresponding to the eight trigrams (*Bagua*). The Hawaiian Islands consist of a chain of islands stretching from east to west, symbolizing the connection between the two directions.
The sky is filled with clouds, keeping the heat at bay and making the weather pleasantly cool. Sitting by the airplane window, I catch glimpses of the scenery across the major Hawaiian islands.
The flight takes about an hour—roughly the same duration as a flight between Cheongju Airport and Jeju Airport in Korea.
This journey through Hawaii involves four separate flights. It was raining at the departure airport, but the weather cleared up as we flew past a few small, uninhabited islands; however, clouds gathered again as we approached the main landmass. The guide mentioned that it had been raining but had since stopped. Since all the guides are Korean, it hardly feels like I am in the United States. It is the only sandy beach in the area, and because the sand is black, it has become a tourist attraction; the black sand was formed by the erosion of volcanic rock.
The land area is six times that of Jeju Island, yet the population is only around 40,000; apparently, 45,000 people live in Hawaii.
A statue of Hawaii's first king stands at the site of his birthplace, and there is a story behind it. Originally, the name "Hawaii" referred to this specific island—"Big Island" is merely a nickname—and the capital was also located here.
Among the things created by humans in the modern era, the airplane stands out as perhaps the greatest invention, as it is capable of carrying hundreds of people and flying through the air all day long.
The engines provide the power to take off, while the wings allow the craft to stay aloft; the design was modeled after the shape of a bird.
