(대)명사 + to 부정사 (대)명사 + to 부정사 전치사 용법

①명사 + to 부정사 = 형용사적 용법 ⇨ 절로 고칠 수 있다

shapes to look at. = shapes which they [we] can look at [O}

shapes which they [we] can look [X} 아래 예문에서 볼 수 있는 것처럼 전치사 at 생략 불가능

㉮ • I have no friend to help me. ⇨ I have no friend who will help me.

I have a lot of things to do today. ⇨ I have a lot of things which I should do today.

Give me some water to drink. (마실 물 좀 주시오.) ⇨ Give me some water which I can drink.

㉯ • He has no house to live in. = He has no house in which to live.

= He has no house in which he can live.

㉰ 전치사에 유의하자 She has an apple to eat. - a) (그녀는 먹을 사과가 있다.)

She has a spoon to eat with.- b) (그녀는 먹을 수저가 있다.)

※ a)에서는 먹다의 목적어가 사과다. b)에서는 먹다의 목적어가 수저가 아니고 수저를 가지고(with)먹다라는 뜻이다.

She has a chair to sit. (×) - a) (그녀는 앉을 의자가 이다.)

She has a chair to sit on. (○) - b)

※ a)에서는 의자를 앉는다는 뜻이 아니고 b)에서 의자 위에 앉는다는 뜻이다.

* I have got letters to write.( 써야 할 편지 )

* I want something to write on. ( 쓸 것-종이 등-)

* I want something to write with. ( 쓸 도구-펜 등-)

Mr. John is not an easy man to talk with. (존씨는 함께 얘기 하기에 쉬운 사람은 아니다.) (man을 수식)
