They say October is the best time of year to visit Hawaii, and I happened to arrive right during that season.
Around noon, I visited the observation deck overlooking an active volcano—my second destination of the day. From the deck, situated at an altitude of about 1,240 meters, I gazed at the active volcano with smoke billowing from it. Just after I took a photo, the view was obscured by mist. I continued to watch the scene while having lunch at a nearby restaurant.
The van traveled south from the airport to reach the site.
It is said that all the gods are believed to gather at the volcanic crater. Chickens cannot live here because the ground is composed of volcanic rock; the terrain is unsuitable for chickens, whose habit is to scratch at the earth.
I noticed a tree by the roadside that looked like a pine, but upon closer inspection, I found it wasn't one.
Pine trees do not thrive in tropical climates. "Suitability" implies alignment with the climatic environment.
The reason the driver's seat in Japanese cars is on the right—rather than the universal left—is that Japan is situated at the easternmost edge of the globe; since the east symbolizes the "left" side, its energy naturally gravitates toward the "right" (the west). In other words, it reflects an orientation toward the mainland.
Next, I ascended to a point closer to the volcanic eruption site to get a better look at the crater. Through a telescope, one can even see sparks flying.
Then, I arrived at a coastal hill formed by lava that had flowed down to the sea and hardened. The landscape is entirely pitch-black; only ferns have managed to survive in the crevices of the cooled rock.
I observed the vast expanse of land reshaped by flowing lava—an area where the map itself has expanded. The sight of the black hills, formed as the lava cooled after flowing down, is truly remarkable. The black soil layers, formed over successive volcanic eruptions, show subtle differences in color. Along the coast, the lava beds have been eroded by the waves into sheer cliffs, creating a spectacular sight as the surging waves crash against them.
On the return journey after sightseeing, it began to rain; we stopped for a restroom break, but the weather outside was cold—I hadn't expected to feel cold in Hawaii.
Visibility was poor, so I couldn't see the smoke rising from the crater. However, by the time we reached the airport, the mist had cleared. It seems one would need to fly there four times to truly say they have experienced Hawaii.
The name "Hawaii" signifies a fresh source or the home of the gods; given that the landscape is constantly reshaped by volcanic eruptions, the name likely embodies the natives' longing for their ancestral home and the belief that life and death are determined by the will of the gods. Hawaii is a place that teaches a profound lesson: only by communing with the sacred divine can one truly understand where to face death and, in doing so, survive.
Today, I toured the Hawaii National Park. Designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, the park encompasses an active volcanic zone.
Rather than featuring jagged, bizarre rock formations, the landscape consists of rolling hills and gentle slopes; even the highest peak bears a resemblance to Hallasan Mountain.
The itinerary concluded with a visit to a Japanese-style nature park featuring stone lanterns.
