 시드 배리트-로저 워터스-닉 메이슨-릭 라이트 네명이
 1969년 사이키델릭 음악으로 1집을 냈습니다. 
 
 2집부터는 시드배리트 대신 데이빗 길모어가 
 기타리스트로 참여하여 현재는 로저워터스를 제외한 
 
 데이빗 길모어-닉 메이슨-릭 라이트 3인조로 움직이고 있으며, 
 로저 워터스는 솔로 활동을 왕성하게 하고 있습니다. 
 
 로저 워터스 솔로나 현재의 핑플이나 
 모두 예전 핑플의 음악의 한 계보씩을 잇고 있기 때문에, 
 들어볼 만 합니다.
 
사이키델릭을 기본으로 한 프로그레시브 락
(또는 아트 락)  음악으로 분류되고 있습니다. 

사이키델릭은 60년대 약물에 취한 정신상태를 
전자음향으로 표현한 음악이라 생각하시면 되겠습니다. 

프로그레시브 락이라는 것은
머 한마디로 정의하기는 어렵지만, 

음악적으로나 또는 내용적으로 뭔가 새로운 시도들을 
지속적으로 하는 락 분야를 말합니다. 

음악적 시도라고 한다면, 
재즈, 클래식, 민속음악 등과의 도입 또는
새로운 사운드의 실험 등을 말할 수 있겠구요, 

내용적 시도라고 한다면 신화와 전설, 철학 또는 정신세계,
사회참여적 내용 등을 말할 수 있겠습니다. 

핑플은 음악적으로는 사이키델릭을 기본으로 하며
내용적으로는 현대사회의 개인화 성향에 대한 비판이 
전성기 음반의 주 된 내용이라고 보시면 되겠습니다.
