At last, Red Sox sort out the pen
07/13/2003
It took Boston Red Sox management three months to face the fact that they needed a real closer for their bullpen. Three months of wasted days and wasted nights, watching the bullpen and the team find brutal ways to lose.
The wakeup call apparently came June 28, when the Red Sox blew a 9-2 lead with two innings to play, resulting in a 10-9 loss to the Florida Marlins.
Soon after that one, the Red Sox yanked Byung-Hyun Kim from the rotation and made him their closer. To fill Kim's spot, they rushed Ramiro Mendoza back from the disabled list and turned him from reliever to starter.
Hey, it's working. Kim has been blowing people away with his nasty submarine pitches, while Mendoza has gone 2-0 in his rejuvenation from early-season bullpen horrors.
This effective change of approach reflects unfavorably on the so-called "closer by committee" theory attributed to Red Sox management. It also reflects unfavorably on Bill James, the statistical guru hired by the Red Sox.
James has a theory that teams waste closers by using them improperly. Well, it's time to clear up a couple of things.
For one, there never was a "closer by committee." Instead, what the Red Sox had going into the season was an unsettled situation caused by management's indecisiveness about what the bullpen roles should be.
There was no designated closer - and that left all the relievers uncertain and uncomfortable.
For another, James certainly believes in having an appointed closer. He just wants him used more often when a game is tied or the team has a one-run lead, and less often when the team goes into the ninth ahead by three runs.
Those situations result in "cheap saves," while adding unnecessarily to the closer's workload.
Even the most old-fashioned of purists would have to agree that in baseball today, a team won't go anywhere without a reliable closer.
Consider Red Sox playoff teams of recent times. They won the AL East in 1990 with Dalton's Jeff Reardon as their closer.
In 1995, they pulled away for the division crown after a deadline trade for closer Rick Aguilera. In 1998, they won the wild card with the considerable help of Tom "Flash" Gordon and his 46 saves.
In 1999, they won the wild card again as manager Jimy Williams and pitching coach Joe Kerrigan (friends in those days) did a masterful job of closer patchwork.
Gordon had 11 saves when he went down. Tim Wakefield then came through with 15 before the braintrust decided to go with Derek Lowe, who also had 15, adding up to a 41-save season.
Now look at some earlier Red Sox teams. The "Morgan Magic" Sox of 1988 had Lee Smith as their bullpen bulwark.
The 1986 Red Sox won a pennant with Bob Stanley in the closer role. The '75 and '67 penannt-winning teams had Dick Drago and John Wyatt, respectively.
With the July 31 trading deadline approaching, all contenders will be looking for pitching. Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein didn't wait. He traded for Kim back on May 28.
Will Epstein make a deadline deal? He could, but with the acquisition of Kim, he may already have made the move that will send his team to the playoffs - and maybe even to the division title.
Kim's presence changes the bullpen dynamic. Pitchers now know their roles, and the bullpen suddenly has become reliable.
No need to worry about closing games. Just give the ball to Kim, and let him wing it. Garry Brown can be reached at gbrown@repub.com
