As Director at Korea University, it is my great pleasure to offer a Translation and Interpreting program under the cooperation with Macquarie University in Sidney, Australia, whose T&I program is highly recognized with the Australian Government organization, NAATI's approval of its quality to train professional interpreters and translators. In a world where cultures and languages are in closer contact than ever before, interpreters and translators, who have been concerned with the facilitation of contact between different languages and different cultures, play a particularly important role in almost all areas of work. It is especially true in our country that has undergone drastic change over the last half a century not only in the political and economic areas but also in the social and cultural fields. | ||
The pace of such change is getting faster due to the globalization and technological development. In order to lead, not follow the trend, we, therefore, are in dire need of qualified interpreters and translators who can bridge over language barriers seamlessly in international communications. In line with Korea University's vision to become a world-class university, our combined T&I program will produce such superior T&I professional who are fully prepared to facilitate and promote international communications. As Dean at Macquarie University, it is my great pleasure to welcome those of you aiming to become future students of the combined Macquarie University-Korea University Translation and Interpreting (T&I) Program. Staff of the T&I Program at Macquarie are very proud and pleased to be working with Korea University in this joint initiative. In an age where globalisation and internationalisation are becoming a way of life, we see this as an important achievement. It is also a mark of the significant role that qualified interpreters and translators will increasingly play as communicators today and in the future. The demand for such communicators is increasing not only in Australia and Korea, but also in other parts of the world. Nor is the demand to be found only in the practice of T&I. | ||
The research base is also developing rapidly, so that trained academics who can conduct investigations in the theory and practice of T&I are also likely to be in great demand. The Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University, of which the T&I Program is a part, has had a strong international reputation for many years. Its programs are wide-ranging and include Applied Linguistics, Dictionary Research, Editing and Publishing, English Language Teaching, Audiology, Speech Pathology and Language Disorders. The T&I program, with its different language strands of Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Auslan (the Australian sign language for the deaf) was initiated almost nine years ago and has grown steadily ever since. As a mark of its quality, the Macquarie program was approved in 2003 by the Australian Government organisation for T&I accreditation, NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters). For some time now overseas students have attended T&I programs on our Sydney campus. The program we have developed with Korea University enables us to offer an even more focused program in a selected overseas environment. We are delighted to have found an excellent partner in ROK, Korea University. Macquarie's excellent T&I program joined with KU's outstanding academic system will ensure that you will be offered a very strong professional training. ▶ Theory and Practice in Translation and Interpreting |
The unit is a general overview of translation and interpreting theory and practical problems facing translators in their work. The unit includes 2hrs a week lecture/workshop focusing on translation theory and on linguistic and cross-cultural aspects of achieving equivalence in translation and interpreting plus 4hrs a week language specific tutorials involving translation from English into Korean and from Korean into English of selected text illustrating equivalence problems. The unit also introduces the practicum to provide students with the opportunity to experience a range of professional contexts, practicing what they have learned in lectures and tutorials. |
▶ Interpreting Techniques |
The unit aims to introduce to students all the necessary interpreting skills: memory extension, paraphrasing, note taking, and sight-translation, etc. It also guides students to expand their knowledge base on current affairs. The students will also be introduced to the practicum to experience a range of professional contexts and practices. By the end of the unit students should be able to interpret accurately a dialogue and a 300 word English speech of moderate complexity into Korean. |
▶ Public Speaking |
The unit aims to develop clear, concise, and competent speaking skills. The unit also aims to facilitate better listening skills and to develop more creativity, speed, and spontaneity in students' verbal responses. The unit offers a range of graded activities increasing in length and degree of difficulty. It includes weekly improvisation exercises, role-playing as well as formal speeches. Pronunciation and grammar problems are attended to as needed. Students are given ample opportunity to express personal opinions, and to demonstrate and refine their ability to reproduce and distil the essence of presentations given by their peers. Topics used as springboards for active discussion include studies of Australian society and culture, current affairs, commerce, etc. The unit also focuses on vocabulary expansion and risk taking in self-expression. |
▶ Writing Skills for Translators |
The unit is designed to improve translators' writing skills at an advanced level, including advanced work on grammar, stylistics and written text creation. It aims to increase the students' sensitivity to the subtle nuances of different styles of writing, and so increase the accuracy of their translations. Each week a pair of students give a presentation based on a text that the lecturer has chosen. The lecturer encourages them to identify the author's agenda and intentions, be they informative, comical, prejudiced, commercial etc and support their conclusions with evidence from the text e.g. level of language, connotations of certain words, grammatical structures and so on. Workshops are held where students will get to grips with grammar problems with special emphasis on commonly repeated mistakes. |
▶ Introduction to Text Analysis |
The unit aims at introducing to students tools for text analysis and practical work on English texts in a number of areas relevant to the translator's and interpreter's work. The unit is also an introduction to discourse analysis for students who have no previous background in linguistics. It specifically aims : - To expose students to a variety of spoken and written texts - To encourage students to discuss discourse differences between English and Korean they are studying |
▶ Translation Practice |
The unit is a translation practicum and involves the translation of various types of texts. Students discuss problems encountered in the course of translation such as text analysis and stylistics, register, language usage as well as equivalence at different levels. It is aimed at introducing strategies to solve such problems and leading students to establish their own strategies. During the tutorial students will first discuss specific translation briefs related to each translation assignment and ways of researching for the job. They may also translate some fragments in class. The rest of the assignment will be done at home and then the result and problems arising from students' work will be discussed in class. |
▶ Interpreting Practice |
The unit aims to provide Intensive and extensive practice in consecutive interpreting in a variety of situations. Students will be guided to expand their knowledge base from local to world levels. In addition to the regular classes, special workshops are organised to meet top practitioners in high demand areas of interpreting. Work experience placements will be arranged through such interpreting service providers as Centrelink for students to have hands-on experience of interpreting. By the end of the course students should be able to pass an interpreting examination designed according to NAATI guidelines for level 3(professional), two dialogues and two 300-word speeches for consecutive interpreting in both directions. |
▶ Language Transfer in the Media |
The unit introduce students to subtitling for different types of programs, the semantics of audiovisual language transfer and types of language reductions in subtitling. The focus will be on issues of appropriate translation of foreign texts, summarizing and fitting language texts into real-time captioning/subtitling. While the emphasis will be on foreign language and English versioning there will be some focus on captioning for the deaf. |

Dr Eddie Ronowicz is the author of 4 books, 2 textbooks of Polish for English speakers and editor of two books in the area of cross-cultural studies, as well as author of many articles in the fields of applied linguistics, second language teaching, contrastive and cross-cultural studies, first languagte attrition and research methodololgy. Joined Macquarie University in February 1984. |

Professor Christian Matthiessen has done research in a range of areas within linguistics and computational linguistics, publishing numerous books and articles. His research is based on an understanding of language as a meaning-making resource - a resource that can be modelled as a complex, adaptive system. In linguistics, Christian has worked on both theory and description. The theoretical work has focused on the development of systemic functional theory, and its application to various research tasks - including translation, language comparison and typology, and language and the brain.
