How to Throw a Large Cast Net - Actual
https://youtu.be/wYIZgGH49dA
0:03
alright guys captain Taylor here with
0:06
salty scales comm what I want to discuss
0:09
with you today is a straightforward
0:11
approach on how to throw a large cast
0:14
net and I see a lot of videos on YouTube
0:18
and a lot of popular videos actually but
0:21
all they do is they show them catching
0:24
the bait they don't show you how to
0:26
throw the net and I think that kind of
0:30
defeats the purpose and even a lot of
0:31
them were titled how to throw a cast net
0:33
but all they're doing is throwing it
0:35
with no instruction so I'm here today in
0:38
hopes to change that I'm going to show
0:40
you a really simple way now keep an open
0:42
mind guys and gals there's literally a
0:44
dozen ways to throw a cast net I'm going
0:47
to show you a simple way a way that my
0:49
uncle showed me when I was just a
0:51
teenager it's a quick and easy way to do
0:54
it and a straightforward way and
0:58
throwing a huge net and like I said this
1:01
one isn't too too big
1:02
it's a 10-footer I mean but it's a 3/8
1:06
inch mesh so it's ideal for the Tampa
1:09
Bay catching larger thread fins I can
1:12
catch fin fish small mullet and things
1:14
like that if I wanted to so let's go
1:17
ahead and get started and I'm going to
1:18
show you the different parts of the net
1:22
so to start off every net has different
1:26
a few different parts I should say this
1:30
is the hand line this is what you attach
1:34
to your wrist
1:36
such as that so that's the part that
1:42
always going to be connected to you next
1:46
we go down and you'll see the swivel
1:48
this allows the the Braille lines to
1:51
twist and and prevents damage to the
1:54
rope and the Braille lines this is what
1:58
they call a horn now here you see the
2:02
mesh this is the mesh and inside of here
2:07
you see the Braille lines and the
2:10
Braille lines go from the horn or the
2:13
swivel here what you can see
2:16
all the way down to the lid line this is
2:26
obviously the lead this is the lead line
2:30
so the purpose of the Braille line when
2:33
you pull your hand line which is
2:35
connected to the Braille line it closes
2:38
the net so I hope that for the beginners
2:45
out there that explains exactly what the
2:48
different parts of the net is and the
2:49
purpose of the net obviously the lead on
2:52
the lead line the purpose is to allow it
2:56
to sink at a rapid pace in order to to
2:59
capture the bait so it's very simple
3:02
actually but it's functional so I'm
3:06
going to go ahead and show you the step
3:07
by step procedure on how to load the net
3:09
and how to make a successful throw with
3:13
a larger net so I hope you enjoy I just
Instructions
3:17
discussed with you all the different
3:19
parts of the cast net now I'm going to
3:21
show you step by step a straight forward
3:23
approach on how to throw a larger cast
3:26
net before me here you see a 10 foot 3/8
3:29
mesh cast net that I use it's a bait net
3:32
that I use for green backspin finish
3:34
small things in that nature the first
3:37
step to throwing this cast net is to
3:39
place your hand line over your wrists to
3:41
secure it you don't want to lose it to
3:43
the bottom of the ocean next in order to
3:46
get the hand line organized I wrap it
3:50
around my thumb and my elbow just like
3:55
so
4:05
and I hold it in my hand just like this
4:08
now I reach down with my I'm
4:10
right-handed so I'm doing this with my
4:13
left hand you're left-handed you'd
4:15
probably do it the opposite way as I'm
4:17
showing you today so being right-handed
4:19
I would reach down and grab the Horn of
4:23
the net which I showed you earlier with
4:25
my right hand and I would pull it tight
4:28
to make sure the Braille lines are
4:31
straight now I would grab the neck of
4:37
the cat's net right under the horn with
4:40
my left hand while holding the rope now
4:46
what I do is I pull the net towards me
4:53
just like so so now you're here now
5:00
the typical rule of thumb is to grab the
5:05
net about
5:07
while your waist is
5:12
that will be approximately right here so
5:15
on my left hand I'm going to come back
5:17
and I'm going to grab right here on the
5:21
net making a loop so you can see this
5:23
makes a loop okay you see the loop now I
5:30
have the whole net in my hand here all
5:34
right now what I do is I reach down and
5:38
I grab and when I place a piece of the
5:46
line right right in between the weights
5:50
I'll play several in my mouth like so
5:57
now what you want to do is you want to
6:00
evenly divide the weight of the net some
6:05
use a little less some part it you know
6:08
pretty much where it's equal on both
6:10
sides that's what I do
6:13
so you would take this put your right
6:17
foot out and gently pull the net over
6:24
about eight inches at a time
6:33
while you're doing this you could check
6:35
the Braille line to make sure that
6:38
nothing is wrapped up or caught up and
6:40
if there if there is something caught up
6:42
you can undo it so a lot of times even I
6:44
know I'm not pulling the whole lead line
6:47
over my foot I'll still go through and
6:49
check it like so now you can see how on
7:04
the left side and the right side the
7:08
weight is equally allocated now what I
7:13
do come close I take my index finger and
7:19
my thumb and extend your arm straight
7:22
down and grab the lead line with your
7:26
index and your thumb like so come up
7:29
close just like so tilt the camera down
7:36
alright now you notice you have your
7:38
three fingers free now you go down and
7:43
you scoop this knit right into your hand
7:49
like so you scooping it into your hand
7:54
just like into your three fingers just
7:56
like that and the rest just hangs back
7:59
here and you'll see that that opens it
8:02
up now when you're throwing this net you
8:06
want to use forward upward momentum and
8:08
you want to pivot you don't want to
8:11
force the net you want to turn fluidly
8:14
and release all at the same time so let
8:18
me show you how to do that the stance
Demonstration
8:20
that I like to take because I'm right
8:22
I'm right handed so my throwing foot is
8:26
going to be my right foot
8:30
so with momentum I'll come back like so
8:43
and I'll turn and throw just like that
8:49
forward and upward just like so so let's
8:57
give it a go and see how it works
9:14
so you can see that the net open just
9:19
like it should now when you pull the
9:22
hand line this closes the net
9:37
obviously we didn't catch anything so
9:41
I'm going to run through that one more
9:42
time at a faster pace so you can see it
9:44
again so I just threw the net leash your
9:48
hand line and wrap it up get it
9:52
organized again you don't want up and
9:54
grab it onto anything when you throw the
9:56
net now you can see my belt lines all
9:59
out that's because the nets in the
10:01
closed position to release your bait or
10:06
to put it back into the open position
10:08
you would grab your horn and step back
10:12
do the fact that this is a larger net
10:14
and pull it tight now the Braille lines
10:17
are tight so now it's in my left hand I
10:21
run my right hand down hopping the net
10:26
back towards me run it down to my waist
10:31
now I'm about to create a loop again
10:34
left hand comes over and grabs where my
10:39
right hand was now it's on the left hand
10:41
side of my body reach down
10:48
place the line in your mouth right on
10:53
the corner of your mouth you don't want
10:54
to pull any teeth folks now you start to
11:00
divide the net accordingly
11:13
okay now I'm just checking the net to
11:16
make sure none of the Braille lines are
11:19
messed up so that I get the full open
11:23
board read with your thumb and your
11:28
index let your arms straight down now
11:33
you have your three fingers now you
11:35
scoop up the remaining part of the net
11:38
with your three fingers just like so
11:45
you're going to throw this nut put your
11:48
right foot forward left is back almost
11:52
standing sideways so you're not
11:56
necessarily facing your target you're
11:58
standing sideways you're using a Ford
12:01
upward motion you're using the limo
12:08
alright so let's give it a throw and see
12:11
how it works and that's how you do it
12:20
folks now when you pull it up you want
12:23
to kind of pop the neck closed and this
12:27
will if you're fishing shallow this I
12:28
have it crawl off the bottom and prevent
12:30
the fish from escaping so that's pretty
12:33
much it guys so that's the gist of how
12:36
to do how to throw a larger net remember
12:41
cast outs coming a variation of lengthen
12:44
and mesh sizes a general rule of thumb
12:46
is that the net must have one and a half
12:49
pounds of lead per radius foot that's
12:51
what works best for me
12:54
the smaller the mesh the slower the
12:56
sinking rate is going to be that's
12:58
because as the net Falls it's it's you
13:01
know it has a lot more friction because
13:03
it's grabbing the water has to go
13:05
through such smaller holes if that makes
13:08
sense a quarter inch is ideal for 8 feet
13:11
or less of water and it's perfect for
13:13
small greenbacks glass minnows minnows
13:16
and small pin fish 3/8 inch mesh which
13:21
I'm using today is good for 12 feet
13:23
less of water and it's typically used
13:25
for medium green back shed pin fish
13:28
thread fence thread fans in small mullet
13:31
now a 5/8 inch mesh net is good for 20
13:34
feet or less of water and it's ideal for
13:37
large green bags shed big pin fish big
13:41
thread fins medium mullet and lady fish
13:43
and one inch of course 1 inch mesh is
13:46
deep water and used for large baits such
13:49
as a huge mullet large shad and the
13:53
notorious lady fish so I hope you guys
