Considerations with respect to clothing and appearance
Clothing and appearance are representations of one's self. When one visits a temple, one should wear simple, unaffected, and modest clothing and use cosmetics and jewelry sparingly. It is appropriate to wear comfortable clothing, provided the clothing is not too revealing. Shorts, etc., are usually not a good idea, nor is elaborate clothing or high heels.
Customs with respect to clothing, cosmetics, etc.
a) Wear simple colors rather than clothing which is too bright or elaborately patterned. b) Avoid clothing that is too short or transparent. c) Avoid clothing that is too tight, suggestive, or revealing. d) Do not wear large or otherwise excessive earrings, necklaces, or other jewelry. e) Use cosmetics sparingly if at all. f) Do not wear cologne, perfume, or other scented cosmetics. g) Do not wear fur or leather clothing. h) Do not bring large handbags or other large or heavy accessories. I) Do not carry excessive items in pockets, so that clothing does not bulge greatly. j) Avoid wearing mountain climbing gear or boots if possible. k) If you wear a straw hat against the sun in summer, avoid hats that are warped, beat up, or too old.
