69) 4/16 Itinerary: Medieval Classic-Style Chinchón and Aranjuez, the Royal Family's Retreat

Two couples arrived in Barcelona on March 7, rented a car, and toured Spain, Portugal, and southern France. They then returned via Andorra on April 11. On April 14, starting from Salamanca, west of Madrid, they traveled clockwise around the historic towns on the outskirts of Madrid. Their itinerary included **Madrigal de las Altas Torres** (April 14), the birthplace of Queen Isabella I; **El Bohodón** (April 14); **Ávila** (April 14), still enclosed by its magnificent medieval walls; **Segovia** (April 14–15), famous for its Roman aqueduct and the Alcázar, said to have inspired the castle in *Snow White*; **Pedraza** and **Sepúlveda** (April 15), where the atmosphere of the Middle Ages has been beautifully preserved; and **Alcalá de Henares** (April 15–16), the birthplace of Spain's greatest writer, Miguel de Cervantes.

Now, after passing through **Chinchón** and **Aranjuez**, they decided to spend the night in **Toledo**, once the heart of medieval Spain, before making their final entry into Madrid.

In the outskirts around central Madrid, medieval towns, royal historical sites, and monasteries have been remarkably well preserved, making it easy to see why so many of them have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

We departed from Alcala de Henares, east of Madrid, at 11:30 a.m. (8,926 km) and traveled about 70 km to Chinchon.

The road to this town, located 45 km southeast of Madrid, passes through a high plateau at an elevation of 600–700 meters. With spring just beginning to arrive, flowers are starting to bloom, and the land is turning green, creating a landscape reminiscent of the peaceful countryside back home.

As we passed scenery dotted here and there with olive trees, a small village came into view. It is a region famous for its garlic and anise liqueur.

두 부부가 3월 7일 바르셀로나에 도착하여 차를  렌트하여 스페인 , 폴투갈과 남 프랑스를 일주하고 다시 4월 11일 안도라를 거쳐 4월 14일 마드리드 서쪽 살라망카에서 마드리드 외곽 주요 옛 도시를 시계추 방향으로 돌면서 이사벨 여왕 출생지인 Madrigal de Las Altas torres (4/14), El Bohodon(4/14), 지금도 중세 성벽으로 둘러싸인 Avila(4/14),로마시대 수도교와 백설공주에 나오는 성의 모델인 Alkazar성이 있는 Segovia(4/14-5),중세의 숨결이 그대로 간직한 Pedraza와 Sepulveda(4/15), 스페인 문호 쎄르반데스의 탄생지 Alcala De Henares(4/15-6)를 들렸다. 이제 Chinchon과 Aranjuez를 거쳐  Madrid에 입성하기 마지막 도시인  중세 스페인의 중심이였던  Toledo에서 오늘 밤을 보내기로 하였다.
Madrid 중심 외곽으로 중세 도시와 왕들의 유적지와 수도원들이 잘 보존되어 있어서 과연 당연히 유네스코 지정 문화유산이 많이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
Madrid 동쪽 Alcala de Henares를 오전 11시 30분 출발하여(8,926Km) 70여 Km떨어진 Chinchon에 왔다.
마드리드 동남쪽에서 45Km떨어진 이 도시로 가는 길은 해발 6-700m 지대의 고원 평야가 펼쳐진 곳으로 이제 봄기운으로 곷이 피기 시작하며 대지가 푸릇푸릇한 모습이 우리의 농촌 전원 풍경이다.  
드문드문 올리브 나무가 보이는 풍경을 지나다 보니 작은 마을이 나타난다. 마늘과 아니스주라는 술이 유명한 고장이다.

         
As we entered the village, a large plaza opened up at its center. Surrounded by three-story buildings preserved in 
their original form, the square is lined with traditional restaurants and cafés. It has a distinctive charm rarely seen in 
Spain.
Wooden houses with balconies, reminiscent of those in old Western films, encircle the round plaza. The vivid green pillars and railings stand out beautifully against the white walls. The white, mortar-shaped houses, stacked three stories high, create a warm and inviting atmosphere. It is truly a unique sight.
Even after more than 40 days of traveling, this is the first place of its kind that has impressed us so deeply.

마을에 들어서니 한 복판에 커다란 광장이 나타난다. 옛날 모습 그대로 3층 건물로 둘러 싸인 이 광장에는 전통 식당과 카페가 보인다. 스페인에서는 보기 힘든 독특한 매력이다.  마치 서부극에서나 나올 법한 것과 같은 발코니가 있는 목조 가옥들이 둥근 광장주위를 둘러싸고 있다. 흰색 벽에 기둥과 난간의 초록색이 선명하다. 절구통 모양의 하얀 집들이 위로 3층까지 중첩되어 있는 모습이 정겹다. 매우 이색적이다.
우리도 40여일 여행 중 이런 멋있는 곳은  처음이다.

During the summer festival, bullfights are said to be held in this plaza. At that time, the balconies of the buildings are said to become excellent viewing spots. Although this place is usually quiet, when bullfights are held, many tourists 
gather here.
However, cars are parked in this plaza, and we also parked here because of that. Nevertheless, this kind of appearance
does not look very good.

여름 철 축제 때에는 투우가 이곳 광장에서 열린다고 한다. 이때에는 건물의 발코니가 좋은 관람석이 된다고 한다. 평상시에는 한가한 이 곳도 투우가 열리면 많은 관광객이 모인다고 한다. 
             그러나 이 광장에 차가 주차하고 있어 우리도 이곳에 주차를 하였으나 이러한 모습은 그다지 좋아 보이지 않는다.

 
There is a spring in one corner of the plaza where clear mineral water flows. Behind this spring, there is a famous pork barbecue restaurant in Chinchon.

This was also the restaurant that the guide we met in Segovia recommended. I wanted to enjoy charcoal-grilled barbecue here with anise liquor, but Jeonggong, who discovered the restaurant while going to the restroom, kept it a secret from me and told his wife, “If I see the meat being grilled over charcoal, I will insist that we eat at this restaurant, so let’s leave here quickly before he finds out.”

On the way to Toledo, Jeonggong suggested that we have our last lunch at a suitable spot using the leftover ramen and rice, and he urged me to leave quickly.

After we left, I remembered what the Spanish guide had told us, but it was already too late to turn the car around. A few years from now, I will come back to this place again.

광장 한편에 약수가 나오는 샘이 있다. 이 샘터 뒷편에는 chinchon에서 유명한 돼지 고기 바베큐 레스토랑이 있다.
세고비아에서 만난 가이드가 이 레스토랑을 추천한 곳이기도 하다.  이곳에서 아니스 주를 곁들여  숯불 바베큐를 들고 싶었지만 화장실을 다녀오다 이 레스토랑을 발견한 정공은  나에게는 비밀로 하고 아내에게 '숯불로 굽고 있는 고기를 내가 보면 이 식당에서 먹자고 할터이니 내가 알기 전에 빨리 이곳을 떠나자'라고 말하였다고 한다.
정공은 톨레도 가는 도중 적당한 곳에서 남은 라면과 밥으로 마지막 점심을 하자고 하면서 나에게  빨리 떠나자고 한다.
떠나고 난 후 스페인 가이드가 말한 것이 생각 났으나 다시 차를 돌리기에는 늦었다. 몇년 후 나는 이 곳을 다시 찾아 올 것이다.

We had lunch with the last food remaining in the car on a quiet mountain road 16 km away from Chinchon. In four more days, this journey will come to an end.  
I feel a renewed sense of emotion.  
When we had lost our appetite, the scenic places along the way and the instant meals we made with ramen and rice helped restore our energy.

Chinchon에서 16Km떨어진 어느 한적한 산길 옆에서 차에 남은 마지막 음식으로 점심을 먹었다.  앞으로 4일후면 이 여정의 끝난다.
감회가 새롭다.
 입맛을 잃었을 때 경치 좋은 곳에서 라면과 쌀로서 즉석으로 한 음식으로 우리의 기운을 북 돋아 주기도 하였다.

         
I arrived at Aranjuez at 4 p.m., a place south of Madrid where the royal family’s summer palace is located. It is about 40 km away from Chinchón. Today, there are hardly any people around. It is quiet. They say it is a lush royal retreat 
surrounded by greenery.

오후 4시 마드리드 남쪽에 있는 왕가의 여름 별장이 있는 Aranjuez에 왔다. Chinchon에서 40여 Km떨어진 곳이다. 오늘  은 사람들이 거의 없다. 조용하다.녹음이 우거진 왕가의 휴양지라고 한다.

This place, with its romantic streets and naturally beautiful scenery, was created as a royal summer residence encompassing the entire city.
The garden, where lush trees and fountains blend together beautifully, is extremely romantic.

We took a drive around this place and then departed for Toledo at 4:30.

로멘틱한 거리 모습과 천혜의 아름다운 경치인 이곳은 도시 전체가 왕실의 별궁으로 조성된 곳이다.
울창한 나무들과 분수가 아름답게 조화를 이루는 정원이 매우 낭만적이다.

이곳은 차로 한바퀴 돌아 보고 4시 30분 톨레도로 떠났다.
