▣ Nine at the 3rd line : Waiting tn the mud brings the arrival of robbers.
[Explanation]
Line Nine at the 3rd line must wait in the mau(without advancing further).
If you fail to do so and advance further, you will invite robbers through your own rash behavior.
[Commentary]
The water has approached right before your eyes.
Advancing further is dangerous.
Wait in the mud [
Advancing further will only end up inviting robbers [
Confucius's commentary states:
"Advancing even when the water has come right before your eyes means the cause
of disaster lies not within oneself, but outside
if it is a situation where I brought robbers upon myself
as long as I proceed with reverence and caution,
nothing will end in failure
Here, one feels firsthand the fact that the danger/risk[險,험] of Kan[坎,감, ☵]
above has already touched Line 3.
It is a situation where I cannot Keep promises with my distant partner[Top Line/
If I simply open my arms, I will fall into the temptation of nearby Line 4,
thereby bringing disaster upon muself.
Is that all?
Line 4 is the counterpart to the initial line[Beginning Nine/
so moral pain must be endured;
Furthermore, as the mistress of Line 5, risk must also be taken,
Making this an uneasy time, no different from the plight of a young mouse trapped in a mud pit.
Even so, one must respect oneself for overcoming dazzling thmptations.
One is uniquely the supreme Solitary One[獨尊,독존] worthy of respect in the world,
while conversely being the worst kind of robber.
The presence of calamity both inside and outslde[災在外也,재재외야] means one must wait
while enduring hardship annd suffering [艱難辛苦,간난신고] in the mud.
Therefore, do not be dazzled by external things.
Stealing and eating someone else's rice cake is like drinking poison.
This is precisely "bringing robbers upon oneself through one's own ignorance
and spiritual darkness" [自我致寇,자아치구].
Since they say there is a way out even if the sky falls, observe yourself more calmly.
Then, you will suffer no failure [
Dongpa(Su Dongpo) examined the upper sand beach and mud pit as follows:
"As thelevel of danger gradually draws near, it becomes 'Send[沙,사]',
and when it gets very close, it becomes 'Mud Pit [泥,니]'.
In the Send[沙,사] , there is minor trouble, and in the Mud Pit [泥,니],
robbers are invited, showing the harmflness of Kan[坎,감, ☵].
However, even if disputes arise and robbers arrive,
through reverence and caution [敬愼,경신], there will be no failure [不敗,불패]."
This is the case when Hexagram Xu [需卦,수괘] transitions to Hexagram Shui Ze Jie
Water over Lake/ Moderation].
Such reverence and caution [敬愼,경신] do not come easily to petty people.
Reverence[敬,경] : The attitude of respecting what is above.
Caution[愼,신] : The attitude of looking at oneself and what is below to act carefully.
'To bring[致,치]' is artificial, while 'to arrive 至(지)' is a natural occurrence.
In other words, 'bringing robbers to arrive[致寇至,치구지]' means leaving things
unattended so that robbers come, thereby 'inviting disaster upon oneself.'
There can be no such thing as inviting robbers to test oneself [
Even a person with great courage is prone to defeat first when facing such a situation,
making it far from easy to avoid robbers.
For reference, an internal mishap is called 'Guisheng[
an external mishap is called 'Xiang [祥,상],
and disaster sent down from heaven is called 'Zai [災殃,재앙]'.
