ARLINGTON -- In an aggressive move Tuesday night that demonstrates a strong commitment to making their first playoff appearance since 1999, the Red Sox acquired hard-throwing closer Scott Williamson from the Reds in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Phil Dumatrait, a minor league player to be named later and cash considerations.

The 27-year-old Williamson is 5-3 with 21 saves this season. In 42 1/3 innings, Williamson has limited the opposition to 34 hits while recording 53 strikeouts. That is an average of 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

<br>
Since June 28, Williamson is 1-0 with four saves and a 1.59 ERA.
<br>

Williamson is the third significant pitching acquisition GM Theo Epstein has made in the last two months.
<br>
<br>
On May 29, Epstein dealt third baseman Shea Hillenbrand to the Diamondbacks for Byung-Hyun Kim. A week ago, he got left-handed setup man Scott Sauerbeck from the Pirates for right-hander Brandon Lyon.

<br>
With Williamson in the fold, there is a possibility Kim will move back into the rotation.

When the Sox first acquired Kim, he was in the rotation. After making five starts, Kim was named the closer on July 1.

He has saved six games in seven opportunities.
