The Jonah’s Prayer.

Dear brothers and sisters, from book of Genesis to Revelation, there a lots of prayers in Holy Bible.

There are 650 prayers listed in the Bible. Every prophet & disciple prayed and taught how to pray?

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, Elijah, Elisha, everyone prayed and taught us how to pray? John the Baptist also taught pray to his disciples. Even our Lord Jesus taught a wonderful prayer to us.

Luke 11 : 1

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finishe, done of His

disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

All the followers of Christ, memorise Lord’s Prayer. Friends, today we are not going to learn about Lord’s pray. We’re going to learn Jonah’s Prayer. A prayer among very critical & hard situation.

1. God is listening and watching us.

Brothers & sisters the first thing what we can learn from Jonah’s prayer is that God is living God and He is always listening our prayers. Jonah ran from God but he was unable to hide himself from God. God commanded to go to Tarshis but Jonah ran towards Tarshis & hide himself in below deck.

Jonah 2 : 5 (Last Portion)

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

But there was a violent storm arose because of Jonah’s disobedience. Sailors failed to handle. Finally, Jonah told it was because of his disobedience. In result Jonah threw into sea & big fish swallowed.

Jonah 2 : 2

He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me. From deep

in the realm of the dead I called for help, and You listened to my cry.

Wonderful thing, we can discover in Jonah’s prayer. Jonah never said, God will answer or God is going to answer but Jonah said, God answered. It mean Jonah prayed with faith that God already answered pray. Maybe we are in a big trouble like Jonah. Just pray with faith that God is listening and He answered. God never said, I will answer next time. Just pray & wait. God is going to answer.

Exodus 3 : 7 (Prayer of Israelites)

The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of My people in Egypt. I have heard

them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering.

2. God is great instructor.

God is great instructor or trainer. God gave task to Jonah to preach the Word of repentance. God want to save Ninevites but Jonah don’t cause Ninevites always made troubles for Israelites & killed Israelites. That’s why Jonah ran & disobeyed God. Friends, God isn’t God of Israelites. He’s God of whole universe. God love believers & non-believers too. God taught a lesson Jonah in a strange way.

Jonah 2 : 3 ~ 4

You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me;

all your waves and breakers swept over me. I said, ‘I have been banished from

your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.

God taught a lesson to Jonah through storm & in the belly of fish cause God love Jonah. God loves us.Today, maybe we’re having a hard time as Jonah had. Remember God love us & He train in His own way.

Hebrews 12 : 6

because the Lord disciplines the one He loves,

and He chastens everyone He accepts as His son.

Psalms 121 : 7 ~ 8

The Lord will keep you from all harm He will watch over your life;

the Lord will watch over your coming & going both now & forevermore.

3. Confession and Repentance.

Friends, always remember God is more than our expectation. When we confess our mistake & repent from our sins from the bottom of our heart. God is gracious and compassionate. He’s slow in anger and abundant in love. Jonah confess in the belly of fish and repent. Finally, God forgave Jonah.

Jonah 2 : 5 ~ 7

The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever.

But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit. “When my life was ebbing

away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple.

Consciously or un-consciously, if we made anything wrong. Kneel down, before any delay.

Acts 3 : 19

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be

wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

Psalms 103 : 8 ~ The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.

4. God is deliverer.

Friends, last & final thing what we can discover in the life of Jonah. God is a deliverer. When Jonah disobeyed God. The great Instructor our Lord God taught a lesson to Jonah in a wonderful way. When Jonah cried out to the Lord. When Jonah confess and repent. God, who is great deliverer, delivered Jonah from the belly of fish to preach the word of repentance to Ninevites.

Jonah 2 : 8 ~ 10

Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’ -- And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Israelites suffered 420 years under the slavery of Egypt. Israelites, cried out to the God and God delivered Israelites miraculously. God not only deliver Israelites. God lead them towards promised land.

Deuteronomy 26 : 9

He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey;

Friends, God is not God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God is not God of Jonah. He is our God too. He will deliver us from our pains, sufferings, sickness and disease, He will provide a good job to us.

Lesson for us :-

Friends, from our child hood many times we listened and read the interesting story of Jonah. There is a wonderful lesson hide in four chapters of Jonah. I am very sure if, Jonah did not confess & repent. Jonah suppose to die in the belly of fish. But Jonah confess and repent. That’s why, God deliverd Jonah with His right righteous hand. Friends, He’s not God of Jonah only. He’s our God too.

Isaiah 41 : 10

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Psalms 120 : 1 ~~~ I call on the Lord in my distress, and He answers me.

Matthew 21 : 22 ~~~~~~~ If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.

My mentor, Dr. Sung Kyu Choi taught me. Whenever, wherever I pray. At first give thanks to God.

2ndly repent all conscious or un-conscious sins & finally ask for the fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit.

요나의 기도

형제자매 여러분, 창세기부터 요한계시록까지 성경에는 수많은 기도가 있습니다. 성경에 650가지 기도가 실려있습니다. 모든 선지자와 제자들은 기도했고 기도하는 법을 가르쳤습니다. 아브라함, 이삭, 야곱, 모세, 다윗, 엘리야, 엘리사 모든 사람들이 기도했고 기도하는 법을 우리에게 가르쳤습니다. 세례 요한 또한 그의 제자들에게 기도를 가르쳤습니다. 우리 주 예수님도 대단한 기도를 우리에게 가르치셨습니다.

누가복음 11 : 1

예수께서 한 곳에서 기도하시고 마치시매 제자 중 하나가 여짜오되 주여 요한이

자기 제자들에게 기도를 가르친 것과 같이 우리에게도 가르쳐 주옵소서.

그리스도의 모든 제자들은 주님의 기도를 기억합니다. 오늘 우리는 주님의 기도를 배우려는

것이 아니라 요나의 기도를 배울 것입니다. 매우 힘들고 극한 상황에서의 기도입니다.

1. 하나님은 들으시고 바라보십니다.

형제자매 여러분, 요나의 기도에서 배울 수 있는 맨 첫 번째는 하나님은 살아계신 하나님이시고 언제나 우리 기도를 들으신다는 것입니다. 요나는 하나님으로부터 달아났지만 하나님으로부터 숨을 수 없었습니다. 하나님은 니느웨로 가라고 명령하셨지만 요나는 다시스로 달아났고 배 밑층에 숨었습니다.

요나 1 : 5 (후반)

요나는 배 밑층에 내려가서 누워 깊이 잠이 든지라

하지만 요나의 불순종 때문에 사나운 폭풍우가 일었습니다. 선원들은 해결할 수 없었습니다. 결국 요나는 이것은 그의 불순종 때문이라고 말했습니다. 그 결과 요나는 바다에 던져졌고 큰 물고기가 삼켰습니다.

요나 2 : 2

이르되 내가 받는 고난으로 말미암아 여호와께 불러 아뢰었더니 주께서 내게

대답하셨고 내가 스올의 뱃속에서 부르짖었더니 주께서 내 음성을 들으셨나이다.

우리는 요나의 기도에서 놀랄만한 것을 발견할 수 있습니다. 요나는 ‘하나님께서 대답하실 것이다, 대답하고 계시다’라고 말하지 않았고 ‘하나님께서 대답하셨다’라고 말했습니다. 하나님께서 이미 응답하셨다는 믿음을 가지고 요나가 기도했다는 것을 의미합니다. 혹시 우리가 요나와 같이 큰 어려움 가운데에 있다면 하나님께서 들으시고 응답하셨다는 믿음을 가지고 기도하십시오.

하나님은 ‘내가 다음번에 응답하겠다’고 말씀하지 않으십니다.

오직 기도하며 기다리십시오. 하나님께서 응답하고 계십니다.

출애굽기 3 : 7 (이스라엘백성의 기도)

여호와께서 이르시되 내가 애굽에 있는 내 백성의 고통을 분명히

보고 그들이 그들의 감독자로 말미암아 부르짖음을 듣고 그 근심을 알고.

2. 하나님은 훌륭한 교사이십니다.

하나님은 훌륭한 교사 혹은 훈련자이십니다. 하나님은 회개의 말씀을 전하라고 요나에게 임무를 주셨습니다. 하나님은 니느웨를 구하고자 하셨지만 니느웨는 항상 이스라엘에게 어려움을 만들고 이스라엘 백성을 죽였기 때문에 요나는 행하지 않았습니다. 그래서 요나는 달아났고 하나님께 불순종했습니다.

하나님은 이스라엘만의 하나님이 아닙니다. 그분은 온 만물의 하나님이십니다. 하나님은 신자를 사랑하시고 불신자도 사랑하십니다. 하나님은 이상한 방법으로 요나에게 교훈을 가르치셨습니다.

요나 2 : 3 ~ 4

주께서 나를 깊음 속 바다 가운데에 던지셨으므로 큰 물이 나를 둘렀고 주의 파도와 큰 물결이 다 내 위에 넘쳤나이다 내가 말하기를 내가 주의 목전에서 쫓겨났을지라도 다시 주의 성전을 바라보겠다 하였나이다.

하나님은 요나를 사랑하셨기 때문에 폭풍우를 통해서 그리고 물고기 뱃속에서 요나에게 교훈을 가르치셨습니다. 오늘 혹시 우리가 요나처럼 힘든 시간을 겪고 있다면 하나님이 우리를 사랑하셔서 그분의 방법으로 훈련하심을 기억하십시오.

히브리서 12 : 6 ~ 주께서 그 사랑하시는 자를 징계하시고 그가 받아들이시는 아들마다 채찍질하심이라 하였으니.

시편 121 : 7 ~ 8

여호와께서 너를 지켜 모든 환난을 면하게 하시며 또 네 영혼을

지키시리로다 여호와께서 너의 출입을 지금부터 영원까지 지키시리로다.

3. 고백과 회개.

하나님은 우리의 예상보다 더 크심을 항상 기억하십시오. 우리가 잘못을 고백하고 마음 깊은 곳으로부터 우리 죄를 회개할 때 하나님은 은혜로우시고 긍휼히 여기십니다. 그분은 노하기를 더디 하시고 사랑이 풍성하십니다. 요나는 물고기 뱃속에서 고백하고 회개했습니다. 결국 하나님께서 요나를 용서하셨습니다.

요나 2 : 5 ~ 7

물이 나를 영혼까지 둘렀사오며 깊음이 나를 에워싸고 바다 풀이 내 머리를 감쌌나이다 내가 산의 뿌리까지 내려갔사오며 땅이 그 빗장으로 나를 오래도록 막았사오니 나의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 내 생명을 구덩이에서 건지셨나이다 내 영혼이 내 속에서 피곤할 때에 내가 여호와를 생각하였더니 내 기도가 주께 이르렀사오며 주의 성전에 미쳤나이다.

의식적으로나 무의식적으로 잘못을 저질렀다면 미루지 말고 무릎 꿇으십시오.

사도행전 3 : 19

그러므로 너희가 회개하고 돌이켜 너희 죄 없이 함을 받으라

이같이 하면 새롭게 되는 날이 주 앞으로부터 이를 것이요.

시편 103 : 8 ~ 여호와는 긍휼이 많으시고 은혜로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시고 인자하심이 풍부하시도다.

4. 하나님은 구원자이십니다.

요나의 삶에서 발견할 수 있는 마지막은 하나님은 구원자라는 것입니다. 요나가 하나님께 불순종했을 때 위대한 교사이신 우리 주 하나님은 이상한 방법으로 요나에게 교훈을 가르치셨습니다. 요나가 주님께 부르짖었을 때, 요나가 고백하고 회개했을 때 위대한 구원자 하나님은 니느웨사람들에게

회개의 말씀을 전하라고 요나를 물고기 뱃속에서 구원하셨습니다.

요나 2 : 8 ~ 10

거짓되고 헛된 것을 숭상하는 모든 자는 자기에게 베푸신 은혜를 버렸사오나 나는 감사하는 목소리로 주께 제사를 드리며 나의 서원을 주께 갚겠나이다 구원은 여호와께 속하였나이다

여호와께서 그 물고기에게 말씀하시매 요나를 육지에 토하니라.

이스라엘 백성은 애굽의 노예로 420년 동안 고통을 당했습니다. 이스라엘 백성은 하나님께

부르짖었고 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성을 기적적으로 건지셨습니다. 하나님은

이스라엘 백성의 구원자일 뿐 아니라 약속의 땅으로 그들을 인도하셨습니다.

신명기 26 : 9 ~~~ 이곳으로 인도하사 이 땅 곧 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을 주셨나이다.

하나님은 아브라함, 이삭, 야곱의 하나님만이 아닙니다. 하나님은 요나만의 하나님이 아닙니다.

그분은 또한 우리의 하나님이십니다. 그분은 우리의 고통, 어려움, 연약함,

질병으로부터 건지실 것이고 우리에게 좋은 일을 주실 것입니다.

우리를 위한 교훈 :-

우리는 요나의 이야기를 어린 시절부터 여러 번 들었고 읽었습니다. 요나서 네 장에는 훌륭한 교훈이 숨어있습니다. 요나가 고백하고 회개하지 않았다면 물고기 뱃속에서 죽었을 것이라고 저는 확신합니다. 하지만 요나는 고백하고 회개했습니다. 그래서 하나님께서 그분의 의로운 오른손으로 요나를 건지셨습니다. 그분은 요나만의 하나님이 아닙니다. 그분은 또한 우리의 하나님이십니다.

이사야 41 : 10 ~~ 두려워하지 말라 내가 너와 함께 함이라 놀라지 말라 나는 네 하나님이 됨이라 내 가 너를 굳세게 하리라 참으로 너를 도와주리라 참으로 나의 의로운 오른손으로 너를 붙들리라.

시편 120 : 1 ~~~~~ 내가 환난 중에 여호와께 부르짖었더니 내게 응답하셨도다.

마태복음 21 : 22 ~~ 너희가 기도할 때에 무엇이든지 믿고 구하는 것은 다 받으리라 하시니라.
