수잔 보일은 성인이 된 후 대부분의 시간을 그녀의 고양이 페블스와 함께 살면서

나이든 어머니를 돌보고 교회에서 노래를 부르는 일로 보냈습니다.

그녀는 전혀 슈퍼스타처럼 보이지 않았습니다.

그래서 아마도 그녀가 탤런트 쇼에서 노래를 부르기 전에

청중들이 이 수수한 중년의 여성을 보고 비웃었던 것 같습니다.

그러나 수잔은 우호적이지 않은 청중들 앞에서도 기죽지 않고 아름답게 노래하여 기립박수를 받았습니다.

Susan Boyle spent most of her adult life living with her cat Pebbles,

caring for her aging mother, and singing in church.

She certainly didn’t look like a musical superstar.

That’s probably why the audience laughed at this unassuming middle-aged woman

before she performed in a talent show.

Undeterred, Susan faced the unfriendly crowd, sang beautifully,

and went on to receive a standing ovation.

스데반은 초대교회 시대에 적대적인 군중들과 마주하게 되었습니다(행 6-7장).

거짓 증인들이 공회에서 스데반을 신성모독으로 고소했을 때(행 6:13),

스데반은 그리스도 안에서 그의 믿음을 더욱 강하게 해준 하나님 말씀의 진리로 답변하였습니다.

답변의 마지막 부분에 이르러 그는

“보라 하늘이 열리고 인자가 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보노라”(7:56)라고 말했습니다.

그러자 군중들은 그를 돌로 쳤습니다(58절).

천국에서 이것을 보고 계셨던 예수님은 스데반을 본향으로 맞이해주셨습니다.

Stephen was confronted by a hostile crowd in the days of the early church (Acts 6–7).

A panel of religious authorities listened

to lying witnesses accuse him of blasphemy (Acts 6:13).

Stephen responded by speaking the truth of God’s Word,

which reinforced his faith in Christ.

At the end of his speech, he said,

“Look! I see the heavens opened and

the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” (7:56).

Then the crowd stoned him (v.58).

Jesus, who was watching from heaven, welcomed Stephen home.

대부분의 그리스도인들은 이 정도의 적대감과 마주치지는 않습니다.

그러나 압박이 가해져올 때 우리 모두가 “주 안에 견고히 서는”것이 필요합니다(빌 4:1).

다른 사람들이 그리스도를 위하는 우리의 목소리를 잠잠케 할 수 없습니다.

이 세상에서 예수님을 위하여 말하는 것이 언제나 군중들의 호의를 얻을 수는 없지만,

그 일이 가장 중요한 곳인 천국에서는 확실히 하나님의 인정을 받게 됩니다.

Most Christians aren’t confronted with this much hostility.

Yet we all need to “stand fast in the Lord” when the pressure is on (Phil. 4:1).

We can’t let others silence our voice for Christ.

Speaking up for Jesus does not always win the crowd’s favor here on earth,

but it does ensure His approval in heaven, where it matters the most.

Acts 6:8-15; 7:54-60  

[행] 6:8	스데반이 은혜와 권능이 충만하여 큰 기사와 표적을 민간에 행하니
[행] 6:9	이른 바 자유민들 즉 구레네인, 알렉산드리아인, 길리기아와 아시아에서 온 사람들의 회당에서 어떤 자들이 일어나 스데반과 더불어 논쟁할새
[행] 6:10	스데반이 지혜와 성령으로 말함을 그들이 능히 당하지 못하여
[행] 6:11	사람들을 매수하여 말하게 하되 이 사람이 모세와 하나님을 모독하는 말을 하는 것을 우리가 들었노라 하게 하고
[행] 6:12	백성과 장로와 서기관들을 충동시켜 와서 잡아가지고 공회에 이르러
[행] 6:13	거짓 증인들을 세우니 이르되 이 사람이 이 거룩한 곳과 율법을 거슬러 말하기를 마지 아니하는도다
[행] 6:14	그의 말에 이 나사렛 예수가 이 곳을 헐고 또 모세가 우리에게 전하여 준 규례를 고치겠다 함을 우리가 들었노라 하거늘
[행] 6:15	공회 중에 앉은 사람들이 다 스데반을 주목하여 보니 그 얼굴이 천사의 얼굴과 같더라

[행] 6:8	Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.
[행] 6:9	Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)--Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen,
[행] 6:10	but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.
[행] 6:11	Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, "We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God."
[행] 6:12	So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.
[행] 6:13	They produced false witnesses, who testified, "This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.
[행] 6:14	For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us."
[행] 6:15	All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

[행] 7:54	그들이 이 말을 듣고 마음에 찔려 그를 향하여 이를 갈거늘
[행] 7:55	스데반이 성령 충만하여 하늘을 우러러 주목하여 하나님의 영광과 및 예수께서 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보고
[행] 7:56	말하되 보라 하늘이 열리고 인자가 하나님 우편에 서신 것을 보노라 한대
[행] 7:57	그들이 큰 소리를 지르며 귀를 막고 일제히 그에게 달려들어
[행] 7:58	성 밖으로 내치고 돌로 칠새 증인들이 옷을 벗어 사울이라 하는 청년의 발 앞에 두니라
[행] 7:59	그들이 돌로 스데반을 치니 스데반이 부르짖어 이르되 주 예수여 내 영혼을 받으시옵소서 하고
[행] 7:60	무릎을 꿇고 크게 불러 이르되 주여 이 죄를 그들에게 돌리지 마옵소서 이 말을 하고 자니라

[행] 7:54	When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.
[행] 7:55	But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
[행] 7:56	"Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."
[행] 7:57	At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,
[행] 7:58	dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.
[행] 7:59	While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
[행] 7:60	Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle —the next the victor's song. To him that overcometh a crown of life shall be: He with the King of glory shall reign eternally. If you meet opposition, maybe it shows that  you are doing something that counts.

일어서라 예수님을 위해, 싸움은 길지 않으리 오늘은 전쟁의 소음이나 내일은 승리자의 노래가 되리니 이기는 자는 생명의 면류관을 얻고 영광의 왕과 함께 영원히 다스릴 것이라 당신이 만약 반대에 부딪친다면 그건 당신이 중요한 일을 하고 있다는 것을 뜻하는지도 모른다.
