US wins first Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold
American Nancy Johnson has won the first gold medal of the Sydney
Olympic Games in the Women's 10m Air rifle ahead of Korean Cho
Hyun Kang and China's Jing Gao.
Atlanta world cup winner Kang equalled the Olympic record in the qualification
round, shooting three perfect rounds (300/300) to top the field heading into
the air rifle women final. For the duration of the final of the best eight,
the 17-year old Korean Kang lead up to the last shot, with the 26-year
old US Johnson scoring two-tenths of a point more on the last final
shot (9.9) to win the gold. "That was my goal and I achieved my goal...
- it's an unbelievable feeling -. I knew I had a medal but I didn't know
it was going to be gold, " the last year's Pan American Games runner-up
Johnson said right after her last shot was shot. China's 24-year old Jing
Gao, who was eighth coming into the final, shot a perfect 10.9 on her
ninth shot to secure the bronze medal from the Russian Lioubov Galkina.
The current world champion and Gold medal favourite Sonja Pfeilschifter
from Germany looked to be in contention, but shot poorly to finish out of
the medals in fifth place.
