1. 형용사로부터 전용

* We are near our journey`s end.

   우리 여행은 거의 끝나가고 있다.

   His office is quite near. ( 그의 사무실을 아주 가깝다.) <형용사>

* I live opposite the church.

   나는 교회 맞은편에 산다. <전치사>

   His house is oppisite to mine. (그의 집은 우리 집과 마주 보고 있다.) <형용사>

2. 동사[분사]로부터 전용

* I know nothing reagarding [concerning] the matter.

   나는 그 일에 대해서는 아무 것도 모른다.

* A cleargyman was executed, notwithstanding many applications in favor of him.

   많은 탄원에도 불구하고 목사는 처형당했다.

3. 접속사로부터 전용

* They all went out but(=except) me.

   나를 빼놓고는 모두 나갔다.

* He is a poet than whom none are greater.

   그 사람보다 위대한 시인이 없을 만큼 그는 훌륭한 시인이다.

* Here is Jones, than whom there is no better authority on the subject.

   여기 존스가 있지만 그 문제에 관해서는 그를 능가할 권위자가 없다.

4. 기타

* There was a baby inside the house.

   집 안에는 아기가 있었다.

* She is on board (of) the ship.

   그녀는 그 배에 타고 있다.
