There were some questions about how Stormgate handles MMR with a ladder reset, so I thought I’d share some of our documentation around MMR & Ranking Points.
When a ladder season rolls, we do the following to “reset”
Wipe the leaderboard display clean
Reset the Ranking Points of all players, including ladder activity levels.
Reset League-Tiers of all players to unplaced
Raise the uncertainty of all player-factions.
Raising the uncertainty of everyone in the player pool allows MMR to more quickly adjust to balance changes and ensures that Ranking Points of a new season don’t ride on the coattails of MMR from the last season.
Adjust the League-Tier boundaries based on data from the previous season.
In this roll, we did not adjust League-Tier boundaries.
We do not reset MMR on a ladder roll.
Maintaining MMR gets players to good and fair games faster.
Matchmaking Rating (MMR)
It’s a formula that attempts to define your current “true skill” as a player. Each player has a unique MMR with each faction. The only way to increase this number higher is to actually get better! This number will go up and down throughout the season based on wins/losses, weighted against the MMR of your opponent.
Players with few games start with a high MMR uncertainty that gradually becomes more accurate over time.
Ranking Points (RP)
This score determines how players are ranked on the board and is designed to reflect player skill, but also reduce the pain of a loss and incentivize activity.
Reducing pain of a loss: RP is determined with a formula, of which the main component is your high watermark seasonal MMR. This means the number only goes up, never down. Even during a losing streak, you will not lose ranking on the board from those losses. The goals are to help reduce ladder anxiety so that players aren’t punished so heavily by a loss and only stand to gain from their wins. There is a maximum amount of RP points gained possible for each match, so at the start of a season, RP will gradually rise to meet or exceed a player’s current MMR.
Incentivize activity: Each win in a given season grants RP bonus so that more active players are rewarded. This means that active players can surpass more skilled, but inactive players on the leaderboard. This prevents good players from completely hogging top spots while only winning a few games at the start of a season. Activity can only help boost RP beyond MMR only by a defined threshold, and will eventually diminish after many wins.
