5. Water-Heaven Xu(Su-Cheon- Su) ䷄ ......6
▣ Six at 4th line : Waiting in blood, emerging from the pit /cave.
[Explanation]
Six at the 4th line waits despertely(for Heavenly Mandate) through blood/toil,
so it will be able to escape from the pit /cave.
[Commentary]
Lines 4 and 5 are already fallen into the water of the Top Line[
However, the gentle Line 4 forms a proper resonance with the initial line[Beginning Nine/
so by maintaining an attitude of obedience, it can escape from this dangerous state.
Hence, waiting for the right time with a heart so desperate as if vomiting blood is
'Waiting in blood[
By realizing one's own weakness and sincerely following the guidance of surroundings,
one can escape from a predicament
Confucius also explained that "waiting desperately in blood means submissively listening
and following well [象曰 需于血 順以聽也,상왈 수우혈 순이청야]."
Boold represents Kan [坎,감, ☵], and Wang Bi[王弼,왕필] interprets this as injury/bloodshed
[殺傷,살상] occurring while blocking the path of Line 3.
"Blood refers to Yin and Yang [陰陽,음양] harming each other.
Line 3 wanted to abvance, while Line 4 remained in its pit and suffered an intrusion as
a result, submissively yielding to the bloodshed.
It is a situation where Yin and Yang are close to each other but not in harmony,
resulting in bloodshed."
This is easy to understand if you know the changing line[爻變,효변] when Hexagram Xu[需卦,수괘]
transitions to Hexagram Ze Tian Guai[澤天夬卦,택천쾌괘 - Lake over Heaven / Resolution].
King Wen was also imprisined in the prison of Youli after incurring the resentment of KIng Zhou,
yet without blaming Heaven, he was able to escape from that trap through the endurance
of expanding / interpreting the I Ching[周易,주역] with a heart as desperate as vomiting blood.
Juja[朱子,주자] also interprets 'Blood[血,혈]' as 'a spot of injury / bloodshed'
and 'a place of danger'.
Jiug(지욱) interpreted this through the Buddhadharma[佛法,불법]:
"Solely through the power of a compassionate heart[慈心三昧,자심삼매- Compassionate Samadhi],
the Mara forces[魔軍,마군] were defeated, trannscending the Three Realms to attain
Buddhahood through true enlightenment [
Live in the world serenely through correct enlightenmment,
accepting the surrender of thieves with a compassionate heart."
Looking back, although Line 4 once frolicked with men overflowing with power,
wealth, and ebergy, upon gaining enlightenment in a fleeting moment like a spring dream,
it will realize that the place it must return to is home with the initial line[Beginning Nine/初九,초구].
