One out of four women is either bulimic or anorexic. One out of three men and 36% of women in the U.S. are overweight. Thirty-six percent of adults have tried either marijauna, cocaine or heroin. 20 million Americans are sex addicts.
Gary Zukav on Addiction Gary Zukav, best-selling author of The Seat of the Soul, says all addictions havecommonalities. Beneath all addictions, he says is "the longing for power... to feel good... to feel loveable... to feel accepted... to feel worthy of being alive" - all attempts at external power. Some of the points Gary shares:
An addict is simply someone who uses one particular behavior uncontrollably.
Labeling a whole person an addict is false - "it is only one part of their personality."
When someone recognizes they may have an addiction, Gary believes it is a joyful moment because then you can choose to do something about it. You have found "a spiritual opportunity," something you came to heal, and healing is a "spiritual accomplishment."
With food addiction, you can have a bad day, eat a special meal or drink and not be an addict. It is when every single bad day you reach for the same thing you have a problem.
The best way to handle a bad day is to just feel it, "let me feel."
bulimic - someone who has a mental illness in which someone eats uncontrollably and in large amounts, then vomits to remove the food from their body
anorexic - someone who has a serious illness often resulting in dangerous weight loss, in which a person, especially a girl or woman, does not eat, or eats too little, because they fear becoming fat
commonality - A shared feature or attribute
label - a word or a phrase which is used to describe the characteristics or qualities of people, activities or things, often in a way that is unfair
