Rocks of Dokdo: A History We Must Know
The rocks of Dokdo have stood as silent witnesses to history since the island’s birth 4.6 million years ago through undersea volcanic activity. Weathering the relentless winds and waves of the East Sea, these formations hold immense global geological value. They also serve as a vital sanctuary for terrestrial life in a harsh environment and stand as masterpieces of natural art in their own right. Including the hundreds of rocks that make up the landscape, the entire island is designated as Natural Monument No. 336, making it a vast, living museum of ecology.
Above all, the rocks of Dokdo are defined by their breathtaking scenery and sculptural beauty. The Samhyeongjegulbawi Rock (Three Brothers Cave Rock), with its three distinct pillars forming unique arches, is such a powerful symbol of Dokdo that it was featured on official government postage stamps in 1954. Visitors can also find a variety of mystical and fun formations that live up to their names, such as Chotdaebawi (Candlestick Rock), Elephant Rock, Chicken Rock, and Face Rock. Most notably, the island holds symbolic formations like Hanbandobawi (Korean Peninsula Rock) and Dongnimmunbawi (Independence Gate Rock), which serve as reminders of the Republic of Korea.
Furthermore, the rocks of Dokdo are spaces of memory, proving that the island has long been a place of life. Haenyeobawi Rock takes its name from the Jeju Haenyeo (female divers) who sailed to Dokdo even before Korea’s liberation. These women contributed to strengthening Korea’s effective control over the island by harvesting seaweed and assisting the Dokdo Volunteer Forces.
On the northernmost tip, Gajebawi Rocks once served as a peaceful sanctuary for the Dokdo sea lions (Gangchi). Tragically, these creatures vanished in the 1970s due to the ruthless overhunting by imperial Japan decades ago. Looking at Gajebawi Rocks, which have lost their masters yet still stand firm, we are reminded of our duty to confront Japan's groundless territorial claims.
In 2026, the beloved global sensation "Gangchi Island" returns with Season 2. Experience the magical adventure of adorable characters exploring the stunning rocks of Dokdo through the lens of K-content.
