Eurocopter-Korean JV to Market KUH Globally
Eurocopter and Korea Aerospace Industires(KAI) have further reinforced their industrial cooperation with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding involving the international marketing of the Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH) here at the Seoul Air Show.
The MOU was inked by the CEOs of both entities, Chung Hae Joo of KAI and Dr. Lutz Bertling of Eurocopter.
The Objective of the MOU is to form JV company to undertake world wide promotion of the Korean Utility Helicopter, an 8 metric ton class military/utility transport helicopter throught the extensive sales network that Eurocopter already has in the international marketplace.
Officials said the JV will be in operation in 2010 with Eurocopter holding a 49% stake with the rest to be held by KAI. The company will be spearheading the sales effort in a market that Eurocopter estimates to be in the region of between 300 to 350 platforms.
The signing ceremony further highlights the successful launch of the KUH programme in 2006. "This is the largest defence contract ever signed with a European entity. KAI is the primary contractor for the KUH programe and expected to deliver around 250 helicopters to the Republic of Korea," a company statement said. The programe is for the replacement of the cuttent fleet of 500MDs and UH-1Hs currently in service with the ROK Army.
In December 2005, the South Korean government selected Eurocopter as the primany partner for the Korea Aerospace Industries(KAI) in the Korean Helicopter Programme(KHP).
"The Korean Government's decision is proof of Eurocopter's expertise in major international cooperative ventures and the company's technological lead in the military helicopter sector," said Dr. Lutz Bertling, CEO of Eurocopter.
Eurocopter will provide KAI with technical assistance for the development of the KUH as well as certain sub-assemblies such as the transmission system and autopilot. Some 40 Eurocopter engineers will be housed in Sacheon. The production phase is scheduled to begin in 2012.
Korea is a traditional customer of Eurocopter for more than 30 years. The relationship began with the delivery of the Alouette III to the ROK Navy, these aircraft are still in operation today. This is followed by the delivery of the 12 BO105 in the frame of the Korean Light Helicopter programme for the benefit of the Korean Army Aviation.
