Another cold night we spent in Bia house.
Dad slept in her couch with a small portable electric heater blowing by a side, and a small electrical heating pad was slipped inside the sleeping bag by my wife who had tugged in. Robia slept alone on her bed because Boraam was too cold last night. She came over to us to the small room where my wife and I slept on the camping mattresses and an electric blanket layered across them on one side. The setup was for dad but he preferred the couch.
I said to my wife, “Feet have to be warm.” She returned, “Back has to be warm when sleep.” So we had cold feet for the second consecutive nights.
Morning trip meal was mundane of our style. One Raman as warm soup, any left over from last night meal (Boraam ate Spanish meal doggy bagged from the restaurant), newly cooked rice with preservative assortments my wife prepared for the trips were our morning feast.
After convincing Bia to keep, the electric bed liner, the pad, and a mattress, we left her house after the hugging ritual.
On the way out, I passed a gas station just because I remember one yesterday at the cross section right before entering the Freeway which led us to the Bay Bridge. However, the gas station I saw was the closed one. It seemed I had remembered it because of the wire fences as I saw it at the SF City Hall front square.
I looked across the street from the slow lane and saw a 76 Gas Station but I had to wait for the traffic to be cleared so that I could go to the far left lane.
As I put food for my van while I swallowed my wife’s complaint on passing the first gas station, she also reminded me of the symbol appeared on the dash board for the unbalanced air pressure on tires. I found the air/water pump station at a corner, but two cars parked for repair.
I approached the repair garage and told a mechanic asking the possibility of moving the parked vehicles. He suggested me to bring the car to the front, and he pulled air hose from the repair shop.
Gassing it to full, I pulled it to the shop as my wife reminded me of checking engine oil that I requested her to remind me yesterday. It was good to ping on someone else brain.
As I opened the hood, the tall and smart looking mechanic who wore glasses approached me and said, “It was 30 all the others 36 (PSI-Pound per Square Inch)”, pointing to the driver side rear. I have been putting 40s to save gas although tires bounced a lot on the road. I asked him what the right pressure of tires for my car is. He explained that it should be attached on the side of the van front door, and he himself walked around to see the sticker. Coming back to face me in the front of the van, he said it should be 36 all. And then he started to say, “You have a lot of stuffs and many passengers so you should put it a bit higher.”
I asked him to check engine oil quantity. He did. It was at the lowest level! I need to put at least a half quart.
This guy was so kind, a typical honest White person with whom I can easily engage in a long conversation. I tested him more by asking what if I add a synthetic oil to boost the viscosity in order to prepare for a long drive. His response was quick, throwing back a question saying, “What did you put it in last time?” I pointed my index finger to the lid of the radiator. He said, “Then, you should add that in.”
“The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has established a numerical code system for grading motor oils, according to their viscosity characteristics. SAE named from low to high viscosity: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 or 60. The numbers 0, 5, 10, 15 and 25 are suffixed with the letter W (Winter) or cold-start viscosity.”
“Synthetic oil was man-made by German scientists in the late 1930s because of their lack of crude for their military needs. It remained fluid in the sub-zero temperatures. The use of it widened through the 1950-60s for aviation engines at temperatures that caused mineral-based lubricants to break down. In the mid-1970s, synthetic motor oils were formulated and commercially applied for the first time in automotive applications. The same SAE system for designating motor oil viscosity also applies to synthetic oils.”
He guided me to the convenient store, tangentially with a drive way and orthogonally situated at the end of the repair garage, overlooking the pump stations and the main street where I was on before pulled in. He asked the Spanish clerk for the oil and let me paid for it.
Let me summarize his kindness:
1. He allowed me to use the garage air pump. He could say that air pump was broke.
2. He pulled the air hose extended out to the front of the garage.
3. He checked the tire pressures and balanced them correctly.
4. He answered my questions with more knowledge than what I know of the tire pressures.
5. He checked oil level and guided me to the store to buy the oil.
6. He brought back the oil and added on to the engine and checked the level 3 times!
7. He asked me what I would do for the left over oil that I told him that I will keep.
8. He cleaned the bottle and gave it back to me.
The reason I spelled out what he did was to compare him to a Good Samaritan story in the Bible. Was he acted like the Good Samaritan?
I think he was. So I offer him that I will cure any of his bodily pain. He politely refused saying, “I’m fine and healthy.” After seen all his kindnesses, I asked him the last time said, “OK, I will fix just one thing, you know, just one. Neck? Arm? Elbow? Wrist?” I continued, “I will do it less than in 5 minutes. OK, 3 minutes?”
He finally, but somewhat hesitantly, accepted my offer after he confessedly said, “I have tendonitis on my right elbow.”
“Tendinitis (also tendonitis), meaning inflammation of a tendon, is a type of tendinopathy often confused with the more common tendinosis, which has similar symptoms but requires different treatment. (The suffix -itis denotes diseases characterized by inflammation.) The term tendinitis should be reserved for tendon injuries that involve larger-scale acute injuries accompanied by inflammation. Generally tendinitis is referred to by the body part involved, such as Achilles tendinitis (affecting the Achilles tendon), or patellar tendinitis (jumper's knee, affecting the patellar tendon).”
I relieved his pain on his inner right elbow quickly. He felt much pain while on treatment from the spot on the elbow to his left neck.
After the treatment, he was fascinated and asked me phone number. Hardly anyone calls me after I have been given away my number, but I gave him it anyway.
We took FW580 East to Stockton and headed due east to Lake Tahoe, South. This winter had piled not much snow so many roads were opened. We picked Carson Pass HW 88 to go over the Sierra Nevada Mountain range to head to the South Tahoe.
“Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada. At a surface elevation of 6,225 ft (1,897 m), it is located along the border between California and Nevada, west of Carson City. Its depth is 1,645 ft (501 m), making it the second-deepest in the United States. Additionally, Lake Tahoe is listed as the 27th largest lake by volume in the world at 122,160,280 acre-ft ."
"The lake was formed about 2 million years ago, and the modern lake being shaped during the ice ages. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides.”
It was much pacifying driving through Carson Pass HW 88 because the pavement was good and the traffic was much less. It also gave many lake views along the panoramic mountain views, such as Bear River Reservoirs, Silver Lake, Caples Lake, and a tiny Blue Lake.
As we climbed the mountain range, we started to spot patches of snow on the eastern part of the slop. My wife’s shutter sounds and dad’s exclamation of “JohCuhNaa” became more frequent.
We ate lunch at a near peak, a slightly open spot, in the van. My wife made instant GimBob with the same stuffs. Borram woke up to join the feast. It was freezing outside but my wife went out to take more pictures.
As we approach South Tahoe, we started to see a whole lot more traffic. Since we were going to come back here again, I decided to head out to Carson City where I reserved a hotel room at the cheapest price.
After dinner, everyone was tired and laid down to rest and fell into sleep. I slipped out to go to a small local casino across the street of the old HW395, passing the Downtown of the capital city of the state of Nevada.
As I turned around from the bar where I got a drink, a black man with a very smiley face greeted me, so I did the same toward him. A moment later after I’ve got a table to seat, that man was on the high stage behind the bar, speaking into the microphone, announcing his band’s next performance.
It was three men band, mostly singing dance music. As he sang a song, a few people stood up in front of the bar stand danced, facing toward slot machines gathered squarely as you can imagine they are in a small hotel conference size room. A moment late a half dozen of women, young to the mid age, walked in asking me to seat on my table. I opened both hands widely to receive them. They all went out to the stage to dance.
I spotted a wheelchair bound man going diagonally across the dancing flour to the end of the bar stand. He talked a lady on the end of the stand briefly, and they started to dance together. Eventually the lady made him to stand by holding his hand first. He was able to stand, but no walk was witnessed.
After the song was over, he pushed his wheel back to where not far from me, across from the middle of the bar entrance where it splits the table groups into two. I waved him to come, and he did.
I asked him a few questions of his condition of how, when, and what and gave him my offer of treatment. He accepted. I worked on his left hand and wrist first. I saw his crouched index finger was opening a bit so I decided to do it on his neck down to finger to trigger his paralyzed left arm entirely. His nerve was healthy and strong. I triggered his left arm within a minute. His arm was vibrating vigorously. I asked him to do hand exercises as I normally ask.
I could feel people staying behind me watched the band singing and people dancing now watched us. The song ended and the ladies returned to the table watched me rather than taking seats. The hand triggering was too violent that gave him the tiredness. I switched it to his left lower leg. Again I could trigger his leg shortly. He enjoyed it a lot that made me too think he never had experienced any sensation down to his left foot.
As I stopped the treatment, he thanked me with a jaw movement of such like from a cerebral palsy patient. He told me it was from a car accident more than 30 years ago when he was in 20ties. Soon after he departed me, a grandma came and bent her back to face me closely, asking, and “Are you a doctor?” I gave her normal my answer to that question saying, “I’m better than the one. What they do? They cut and slowly poison you, right.” She pulled her face a bit away from me, and reluctantly agreed and said, “What is this? He needs this for his leg. I will tell his mom that he needs this. He liked it very much.” I returned her that what he is going to do with it if he purchases one. I told her that it is not worth the money if he does not know how to use it.
She walked back to her position behind me. The pack of ladies now was staring at me with widened eyes to observe me in details to pick any movement of mine. One sat next me told me they are locals. This gave me the answer of this casino culture I initially witnessed. It was Saturday night, and it was a local hang out place for a weekend life. Many others gazed me from a distance. Whenever I made eye contact, every single one of them avoided a direct eye contact with me. They were scare of me, I guessed.
I went back to the hotel and passed out 30 minutes before the midnight after depositing $40 on my unknown CD account.
