Warning Lights

“Now, therefore,” says the Lord, “Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” - Joel 2:12

I didn’t think that the hesitation in my car engine and that little yellow “check engine” light on my dashboard really needed my immediate attention. I sang it away, saying that I would get to it tomorrow. However, the next morning when I turned the key to start my car, it wouldn’t start.

My first reaction was frustration, knowing that this would mean money, time, and inconvenience. My second thought was more of a resolution: I need to pay attention to warning lights that are trying to get my attention—they can mean something is wrong.

In Joel 2:12-17, we read that God used the prophet Joel to encourage His people to pay attention to the warning light on their spiritual dashboard. Prosperity had caused them to become complacent and negligent in their commitment to the Lord. Their faith had degenerated into empty formalism and their lives into moral bankruptcy. So God sent a locust plague to ruin crops in order to get His people’s attention, causing them to change their behavior and turn to Him with their whole heart.

Joel 2:12-17

[12] "Now, therefore," says the LORD, "Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning."
[13] So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.
[14] Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him--A grain offering and a drink offering For the LORD your God?
[15] Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly;
[16] Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room.
[17] Let the priests, who minister to the LORD, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, "Spare Your people, O LORD, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'"

여호와의 말씀에 너희는 이제라도 금식하며 울며 애통하고 마음을 다하여 내게로 돌아오라하셨나니 - 요엘 2:12

자동차 엔진이 불안정하게 멈칫멈칫하는 데다, 계기판의 작은 노란색 “엔진점검” 경고표시등까지 들어오는 것을 보고도 나는 즉시 무언가를 해야 한다고 생각지 않았습니다. 내일 하면 되겠지 하고는 흥얼거리고 지나쳤던 것입니다. 그런데 그 다음날 아침에 차 열쇠를 돌려 시동을 걸었지만, 시동이 걸리지 않았습니다.

차를 고치는데 따르는 시간과 돈, 그리고 불편함을 알고 있었기에 나는 제일 먼저 짜증이 났습니다. 그 다음에 든 생각은 일종의 결심이었습니다. 주목하라고 요구하는 경고표시등이 들어올 때는, 어디엔가 문제가 있다는 것을 의미하는 것이기에 주의를 기울여야겠다는 생각입니다.

우리는 요엘 2장 12-17절에서 하나님이 요엘 선지자를 사용하여 주님의 백성들에게 그들의 영적 계기판의 경고표시등에 주목하라고 권면하시는 것을 보게 됩니다. 그들은 물질적 번영에 만족하여 주님에 대한 헌신을 소홀히 하였습니다. 그들의 신앙은 공허한 형식주의로 전락해버렸고, 그들의 삶은 도덕적으로 파산해버렸습니다. 그래서 하나님은 그들이 태도를 바꾸고 전심으로 주님께 돌아올 수 있도록, 주님의 백성의 주의를 환기시키기 위해 메뚜기 떼의 재앙이 농작물을 망쳐놓게 하셨습니다.

당신의 삶에는 어떤 경고표시등이 들어와 있습니까? 죄를 고백하고 회개함으로 조정되고 수리되어야 할 것들은 무엇입니까?

	우리가 최선이라고 생각하는 것을 하게 하는 애매한 그 무엇이 하나님의 사랑은 아니다 그 사랑은 우리를 안내하고, 경고하고, 길을 보여주며 항상 우리를 시험한다
	양심의 가책은 하나님의 경고표시등이다.

요엘 2:12-17

[12] 여호와의 말씀에 너희는 이제라도 금식하고 울며 애통하고 마음을 다하여 내게로 돌아오라 하셨나니
[13] 너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고 너희 하나님 여호와께로 돌아올지어다 그는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시나니
[14] 주께서 혹시 마음과 뜻을 돌이키시고 그 뒤에 복을 내리사 너희 하나님 여호와께 소제와 전제를 드리게 하지 아니하실는지 누가 알겠느냐
[15] 너희는 시온에서 나팔을 불어 거룩한 금식일을 정하고 성회를 소집하라
[16] 백성을 모아 그 모임을 거룩하게 하고 장로들을 모으며 어린이와 젖 먹는 자를 모으며 신랑을 그 방에서 나오게 하며 신부도 그 신방에서 나오게 하고
[17] 여호와를 섬기는 제사장들은 낭실과 제단 사이에서 울며 이르기를 여호와여 주의 백성을 불쌍히 여기소서 주의 기업을 욕되게 하여 나라들로 그들을 관할하지 못하게 하옵소서 어찌하여 이방인으로 그들의 하나님이 어디 있느냐 말하게 하겠나이까 할지어다
