‘fast’는 ‘빠른’이라는 뜻의 형용사고요, ‘safe’ 는 ‘안전한’이라는 뜻의 형용사죠? 그런데 가장 빠른, 가장 안전한 이라고 나타내기 위해 뒤에 형용사 뒤에‘est’를 붙여 최상급으로 만들었습니다. ‘Fastest’ ‘가장 빠른’, ‘Safest’ ‘가장 안전한’ 이란 뜻이죠.

그래서 ‘What is the fastest yet safest way to send this package?’ 하면 ‘이 소포를 가장 빠르고 안전하게 보내는 방법이 뭐죠?’ 라는 뜻입니다.

동사 ‘Send’대신에 ‘Mail’을 쓸 수도 있습니다. 그래서 ‘What is the fastest yet safest way to mail this package?’해도 같은 말입니다.

항공편으로 보내야 가장 빨리 도착할 것 같은데요, 그럼 ‘이 소포를 항공 편으로 보내고 싶습니다.’ 영어로는  ‘I’d like to send this package by airmail.’ 또는 ‘I’d like to send this package by air.’ 할 수 있습니다.

참고) 항공 우편 ‘Airmail’은 신속하긴 하지만 값이 많이 비싼데요, 조금 느리긴 해도 값이 싼 우편, 배나 트럭 등으로 배달 되는 우편이 영어로 ‘surface mail’ 즉 해상/ 육상 우편입니다. 그래서 항공편이 아닌 일반 (육상/해상)우편으로 보내고 싶어요, 영어로는 ‘I’d like to send this package by surface mail.’할 수 있습니다.

ex) A: 북한으로도 소포를 보낼 수 있나요?

B: 네. 국제 우편 서비스를 통해 우편을 보낼 수 있다고 하더라고요.

그런데 예외에 있다고 하더라고요.

참고) overnight millionaire, 에서 overnight 은 말 그대로 하루 사이에 부자가 된 것을 의미 할 수도 있지만, 짧은 시간 내에 (in a very short time), 갑자기 (quickly)의 의미도 있습니다. 그래서 Tom became an overnight millionaire, 는 Tom became very rich quickly (in a very short time.)의 의미가 있다는 것도 기억해두세요.

계속해서 소포에 대한 보험과 배달 수령 확인 서비스도 같이 해서, 영어로는 ‘along with insurance and delivery confirmation’입니다.
