FEDERICI - MOM - So calm under pressure, great with crosses and a match saving save. He is going to be a top rate goalkeeper, the next Aussie International, wow.
GUNNARSSON - Next best player on the pitch, Perfect headed goal and great reading at the back, if he's a squad player, then what a squad player.
BIKEY - For me, and I know i'm in the minority, a calamity waiting to happen. Lazy too. some towering headers and great blocks, but not a premiership centre back (maybe a midfielder though!). Sorry.
INGARMASSON - As usual quietly very effective, one of the unsung heroes of this season.
DE LA CRUZ - Seems to have learnt his limitations, one of the most important things as a sportsman. Good both going forwards and back. Great job on the number 7, whoever he was!
SHOREY - Sadly, in front of McClaren, not his best game. Still an asset to any premiership team though
SIDWELL - Very disciplined job in midfield, won everything in the air and I really hope he is here next season.
OSTER - Great on the ball and ran his heart out, another terrific squad player and well worth the contract extension. SODJE looked strong in the air and at least meant Bikey could play in midfield!
CONVEY - Did ok, not at his best and was upstaged by HUNT, but a decent performance on his rehab.
SEOL - If is wasn't for his early season form we may not be where we are now, but without the ball he is bone idle. Needs a rollocking because he has the turn of shoulder many internationals would dream of. He has two good feet and good in the air. If Hunt had his raw attributes, he'd be one of the best players in the world, but Seaul seems like a kid not paying attention in class. LITTLE had no time to impress!
KITSON - I actually think Lita is a better lone striker, but good work rate, good use of his body strength and unlucky not to score. A difficult job well done.

Federici held onto firmly-struck shots; Marcus has had a tendency to bobble the odd one this season. He's a great prospect for the future. The ref and commentators thought Ronaldo shot wide, but I think Federici actually deflected it with his knee.
De La Cruz MOTM for me. Never put a foot wrong, made some crucial last ditch challenges, covered vast amounts of space tracking whoever was on the LW - first Ronaldo, then Park - and almost scored as well. He also got invovled in some neat passing play from time to time and never looked uncomfortable.
Tha game was available here in Canada. Seol actually ran his socks off and was constantly back taking away United's passsing options and surprisingly won a number of balls in the tackle too.
The only real mistake
was in the first half failing to spot Convey wide open in the middle, choosing a hopeless far post cross instead. Overall, I'd give him an 8 on that performance.
I agree Federici did save the Ronaldo break away and looked very promising. My MOTM though was DLC, a fantastic number of crucial blocks and interceptions and almost created and finished another great goal.
Shorey was poor in the use of the ball but I blame Convey, he wasn't offering any wide passing options.

Bryn, closely followed by Adam F. Has Bryn found some extra pace? To me he looked a yard quicker than last season... Seol was poor...OK a couple of good crosses but had masses of service (as DeLa had a good game and almost all of Adam's distribution went right and unlike Bobby due to Shorey's surprisingly off game) and wasted virtually all of it. With Blakey on for the last 20 mins (as opposed to the 5 he had) we could have snatched the win.
Overall another great performance by the team today and Coppell called it right again...
You cant be giving players such low ratings when they have just a great result.
What does Federici have to do to get a 9, he let in a goal but made a world class save.
Well there's your answer. It equals it out if anything. We ground out a great result, there's no denying it, but we werent exactly class. The defending was really good but you have to admit that we would be in a different situation now if Man Utd could finish today.

Seol gets unfair criticism on here.
But fickle fans are always looking to blame someone instead of just accepting certain outcomes. Seol was vital in the start of our season and has proved to be a very good player, he might be inconsistent but wingers sometimes are, flair players can win games and im sure soel will improve over time under coppell.
I have a feeling because he is a new player its easier for the fans to pick him out for criticism, easier on their conscience.

I'm not picking on Seol. He, and convey, were very inaffective today, but we ground out a result so hey ho. IMO the criticism he gets on here isn't unjust, in fact it's fair. We don't pay his wages so he can prance around, do a few step overs and lose the ball, then stand still for 10 minutes. It doesn't work in the Premiership.

Not only are you in the minority but you are also wrong (Sorry). Every game he has played he has improved (give or take Wigan). His concentration was excellent, his interventions assured, and when he went into midfield at the end of the game he improved that department.
SIGN HIM PERMANENTLY AS SOON AS WE HAVE THE CHANCE
Federici - 9 Some blinding saves - Looked solid....distribution good (What a save from Larsson, I think) Goal he saw late so I'll let him off (Should have been closed down quicker) Shorey - 6 High standards ,eam he gets a just a 6 though was competant against an inform Ronaldo/Park Bikey - 7 Provong a promising player, creases are still there but slowly dissapating Gunnarsson - 8/[b] Top header important play, helped solidify the defence Ingimarssonn - [b]7 Did ok.. De La Cruz - 8 Good positive mantra, several great blocks when a goal would probably resulted. Almost finished off a nice little move at the end of the 1st half. Seol - 6 Did not too bad, better application though things didnt always come off.
Convey - 6 Oster - 7 Good running playing in the midfield. Not quite up to the likes of harps but did ok Sidwell - 8 Again tidy effiecient. Good tackling and breaking up play. Good considering he was up against an £18 million player Kitson - 7 Did well to hold the ball up and give it to on copming midfielders, as a sympton of the tactics/formation...didnt quite get the support required to really worry United

Do you honestly think that McLaren noticed any of the READING players?
That is the first time I have seen Federici play. Made one great reaction save, looked to have had several of United's near misses covered. However, he looks a little unconvincing on crosses, commanding the box and warning the defenders to pick up runs. That will come with experience though. Several poor kicks too. An 8 is reasonable but 9 is getting carried away.

The nitwit commentator on Star Sports - who was generally hopeless - observed that the only Man U players who would be of interest to McLAren were Carrick and Brown. Not a single mention os a REading player even though there was a close up of Shorey hile he was talking about it.

In absolutely no way am I fickle. I already stated that Seol had a great start to the season, I just see him as lazy and a daydreamer (with Hunt being the other end of the scale). He has all the natural attributes to be a great player if he improves his performances when the opposition has the ball.

Federici 9 - Outstanding, absouletly brilliant with two world class saves from Ronaldo and Larsson.
De La Cruz 9 - Did a great job at right-back and made a couple of crucial interventions and could, probably should, have scored in the 1st half.
Shorey 7 - Wasn't his best game, and will be disappionted considering McLaren was their but he did well when up against Ronaldo. Would have scored had it not been for Wes Brown on the line.
Bikey 8 - Solid yet again - the new Sonko.
Ingimarsson 8 - Solid and provides great experience for someone like Bikey.
Gunnarsson 9 - Did well seems as he is just on his way back from injury and maybe not playing in his best position. Cracking header for the goal.
Seol 8 - Has had a lot of stick in recent times but I though he was terrific today and put in some top balls in - notably the one for Shorey that was cleared off the line. Nearly scored two Pedro Mendes-esque screamers as well!
...그 후는 무슨말인지 이해가;
Convey 6 - Never really got into the game. Obviously still suffering from injuries.
Sidwell 8 - Did well. Didn't have much chance to get forward but defensively was terrific - McLaren must have noticed him.
Oster 7 - A few wayward passes but did well in the centre. Superb link-up play with De La Cruz for his chance in the 1st half.
Kitson 7 - If he had someone upfront with him, he would have been excellent. Struggled on his own but never gave up on anything and deserved a goal from Vidic's mistake.
Subs:
Hunt 8 - Terrific when he came on. He was lively and energetic, everything that Convey was last year.
(Ibrahima) Sodje 7 - Solid.
Little 7 - Not a lot of time to do anything but held the ball up well.

FEDERICI - def man of the match
GUNNARSSON - solid display fantastic goal
BIKEY - not as good as last week and seemed close to doing somthing silly
INGARMASSON - good solid defending
DE LA CRUZ - good going forward and seemed to cause a few problems, came close to a goal but let down by his final touch
SHOREY - def up there with his best performances for me.
SIDWELL - worked hard and showed that he is a huge part of the set up.
OSTER - hard working but i thought that he laked a little.
CONVEY - started well then it all went to rat sh1t a little and when hunt came on i thought that it was an inspired substitution.
SEOL - was good when he was on the ball but did little else, saw little tracking back when he lost the ball
KITSON - had a hard time but there was little that he could do on his own, looked out on a limb on a number of occasions, i thoght that lita should have come on in the second half but copell knows better than me and we wre an inspired team in the latter stages on the second half, although i can't help but feel that we would have won the game if lita was on the pitch.

I have a funny feeling Reading isnt your first team.
Frederici MOM for me. I was slightly concerned about him before the match. Yes, I know he's done well in his previous appearances but this was a different proposition. Only his third game, in front of 70,000+ at a ground where the home team rarely lose and often hammer teams, against some of the best attacking players in Europe, live on telly. I thought he might freeze but his performance was a revelation. His save fom Ronaldo was excellent, especially considering it came at a time when Utd were getting on top and it kept us in the game but the one from Larsson was quite simply world class. Aside from his shot stopping, his overall game was pretty good as well.
The defence played extremely well as a unit, DLC had his best game for us and Ivar, Bryn and Bikey covered each other well. Shorey was disappointing.
Midfield harried and pressurised well. No outstanding individual performances. Seol looked lethargic but was involved in our best attacking moves but Convey didn't see much of the ball.
Oster was tidy with the ball and Sidwell was his usual tenacious self.
Kitson was isolated for much of the match but was alive to the one oportunity which came his way (pity he couldn't put it away, that will come with match fitness) and linked up well in the last 20 minutes when our midfield got more forward in support.
Very good team performance though.

Completely wrong on all accounts. When you've been watching Reading through out the years you have a divine right to criticise the players (who's wages you pay) when they are not putting the effort in.

Federici - 8. Solid game and a very good save to deny Larsson. Couldn't do much about Carrick's goal.
Shorey - 6. Good defensively but that wasn't a good game attacking wise. A few passes went astray but was unfortunate to be denied a goal by Wes Brown.
Bikey - 7. Can't complain. Did his job well and was solid again.
Gunnarsson - 9 MOTM. Excellent performance. Solid in defence, with a lot of interventions, took the goal well.
Ingimarssonn - 7. Same with Bikey. Good captain's performance.
De La Cruz - 8. Useful going forward, solid in defence, providing good blocks or hussle against Ji Sung Park.
Seol - 6. Cringing first half made up with a much more active second half. Some good crosses but needs to up the tempo when with the ball. Showed signs of it in the second half.
Convey - 5. Good coming back doing defensive duties but didn't do much attacking wise unfortunately.
Oster - 7. Worked very hard all round. Hope he continues such performances.
Sidwell - 7. Same as Oster.
Kitson - 6. Good when he had the ball. Unfortunately he hardly had the ball poor fella.
Special mention for...
Hunt - 8. Now he was very good and really wanted the ball when he came on. Very determined and very impressed with him.
Great performance by mostly fringe players. Great effort and organisation. Some good displays;
Fed - good stuff, one for the future.
DLC - has got better and better. A good reader of the game which makes up for his lack of pace and surprisingly good in the air.
Shorey - a big fan but one of his weaker performances today. In fact the left side was poor all round as BC was missing in action.
Bikey - excellent and committed. Yes, some mistakes but he is going to be very good.
Ingi - superb captains performance.
Gunna - great squad player, showed how dependable he is.
Convey - I really wanted him to do well today but it just didn't happen.
Sidwell - played to a plan, didn't make half the forward runs he normally does. Solid display.
Oster - ran himself into the ground but is a squad player.
Seol - old Jetlag tried reasonably hard but he was poor. Couldn't hold it up and gave away possesion so many times, very frustrating.
Kitson - did OK but hard on his own with no support. Not a natural lone striker.
Hunt - never thought I would want BC off and Hunt on - a breath of fresh air when he came on.
The team is over individual and today showed that.
I really think we could have gone for broke today. Last 15 minutes put Little on for Seol and Lita for AN Other and gone 442. I think we could have taken it.

On the evidence I've seen, better than Ashdown and a genuine prospect to oust Marcus.
SC being interviewed on BBCRB yesterday about his "reserve team" called Federici the future Aussie keeper.
Just back from game.Excellent all round. The only exception for me was Seol who at times looked thoroughly disinterested and Shorey who whilst good was not his usual Ashoreydly brilliant best. Ingi was my star man.Marshalled the defence with great aplomb. His Icelandic pal Gunnar was right in the mix when required and deserved the goal for his efforts. Hunty was simply amazing for his brief appearance. He crammed his usual frenetic exhuberant game into the moments he got and with his injection of mega-umph quite frankly we could have won the thing. For me its Hunty over Bobby every time as things stand. Finally A Fed has really come of age with that performance.Several class saves but one that was simply put world class. No13 outsung united for most of the game.Nothing new there
Another word about Bryn, come to think of it. After Portsmouth and Liverpool in the cup I was beginning to think he'd been found out at this level but, like the whole squad, he's upped his game and is playing out of his skin.
And to think Boothroyd thought Gavin Mahon was a better player.
Probably about right except a bit to harsh on Seol and a bit generous to Hunt.
MOTM had to be Federici. Two world class saves from Ronaldo and Larsson, highlighted on MOTD. Also Sidwell had a very good game playing a regimented role, and broke up a lot of Utd attacks with interceptions and then distributed the ball well with good feet and good awareness. He'll be a big loss if he goes.
I was sorry that Convey and Shorey didn't link up much. Bobby looked short on confidence and could do with another run-out before the replay, although the home crowd and more emphasis on attack should help him a bit.

100% spot on
Convey was fairly anonmous, but he did manage to play a world class ball through to Ktison, who was unfortunately offside. I think 5 is a little harsh on him. Certainly with Seol given a 6. I thought he was poor.
If he's going to take someone on he has to do it at pace not at a stroll. If he isn't going to take them on at pace then he needs to play the simple ball to keep play moving, rather than daudling whilst 2 more men get over to cover him, leaving him with no options as he tries to saunter past three men and lose the ball.

I don't think our style suited pacey ligtweigt attacking wingers yesterday. We clearly weren't that up for breaking hard and fast, incase utd broke back so they spent most their game with few options.
Hopefully a more open and entertaining game in the replay

I agree Seol was poor, I wouldn't mind him leaving in the summer. However in his defence he had to try to keep the ball as there was only one man usually to hit - Kitson. He had to try to delay for others to get forward which they weren't keen to do.
A lot of Readings play is based on supreme fitness. It is understandable that non regulars will not have that same match conditioning. Normally if the right winger has it then Hunt will get forward on the left and Harper and Sidwell spend loads of time getting forward. Couldn't happen yesterday as Oster and Convoy as just 2 examples are no-where near the fitness levels as the people they stood in for.
Apart from Seol's incredibly frustrating strolls when a rapid attack might have caused real problems for Utd I thought he played pretty damned well actually. More tackling back than usual and put in some very decent crosses.
Unfortunately the strongest memory seems to be the one of the idling waster towards the end which is a bit unfair.
I thought Convey was totally anonymous - what a difference when Hunt came on!!

Spot on Royal Rother.
I seem to remember the TV pundits thought he did pretty well too. Some ver good crosses, which we would have taken advantage of if a few more of our players had pushed (been allowed to push) forward.
Seol and Convey were quite but everything we did went throught the middle. Seol fustrated me as so many times he had room to excelerate into space and he just walked into it.
Fair play to number 13 again, in excellent voice and outsung united AGAIN

Federici and DLC in a close run for me. DLC had some very good key defending moments, and participated fairly well forwards as well.
But most of all it was a team effort to keep Man Utd at bay reasonably well, despite their overwhelming pressure especially the last part of first half.
We did have a few chances as well, but I think Federici saved us from a defeat we couldn't have had too many complaints about.

Remove your blinkers and stop trying to judge his work-rate against Sidwell's. It doesn't matter if he looks a bit lazy, he played a perfect game as a winger, crossed superbly, stopped Man U attacking freely down his flank and almost set up a couple of goals. One cross in each half was exceptional and somebody should have scored from them.

hmmmm He could have done a whole lot more on numerous occaisions. that is not the game of a MOTM
Convey looks very short on confidence at the moment & his pace seems to have disappeared too.
The value of match conditioning shouldn't be underestimated. Time on the pitch playing in combinations is essential. Look at Hunt, Lita, Little etc, they got better when they had a run in the team and fitter to. Kitson is not ready yet and needs more games to get back to his sharpest and best.
BC needs a run but he won't get it because Hunt is the man in posession.
Seol for example is not match fit, he always looks like he's a cylinder short.
Convey MOTM in the News of thw World-where did they get that from??!!. He was the one player i thought was pretty ineffective-Hunt has definately staked his claim now and its all down to Convey to get his position back. DLC was great yesterday, didnt put a foot wrong and my MOTM

My problem with Seol's game is that several times he stops the flow in our attacking moves, by dropping the tempo. A bit like Samaras i our game vs Aston Villa a few weeks ago.

That doesn't count becuase the review wouldn't have been written by anybody who actually watched the game.

Spot on. You're screaming at him to turn on the jets and he kills the momentum. I wasn;t troubled by his work rate of the ball, which seems decent, but what he did on it.

Oster - Worked hard throughout the game and linked up well DLC. Great corner to find Gunna! Great performance from him
Oster started out oozing class and confidence and running the midfield. But as time went on he drifted out, and the passes started to go astray. I really like him and always want him to do well, but he reminds in me of Kevin Watson (another player I always rooted for) who also couldn't seem to impose himself for any sustained period.

True, but he looked absolutely knackered by the end- his workrate was fantastic. And against Man United at Old Trafford, he deserves great credit for his performance in a (relatively) unfamiliar central midfield position.

Reading were playing 541. Seol's job was to hold the ball up and then cross. Kitson was never able to get on the ball and Convey rarely seemed to be open. How many crosses came in from the left? Under those difficult conditions Seol did very well, not losing the ball, and still putting in a number of high quality crosses.
Unfortunately, even after the delayed cross, BC was never anywhere near the far post. His fitness just isn't back yet.
Very few penetrations from United came down their left side, That suggests that Seol was doing his defensive duties (which he was). I just watched the game again and he work rate was quite impressive.
Kitson was very lazy getting back onside several times and that blew some promising attacks.
IMO everyone played very well except Convey and Kitson.
IMO everyone played very well except Convey and Kitson.
Surely no coincidence that they are the two players searching for match fitness after injury lay offs.
To be fair to the pair of them the ball wasn't spread wide to Convey that often and Kitson was playing the lone striker against 4 international defenders.

I'm a big fan of him, saw him score THAT goal against Italy in the 2002 Wld Cup.
He's not doing his stuff as well as early season when he moved with more intent and threat and was greedy too (or just that bit too greedy).
Yesterday he simply went down the flank and put in 1 ok cross and far too many poor crosses. He didn't seem to wanna try anything on his own. He did tackle a few times but almost seemed 2 favourite each time.
Park doesn't necessarily look as skillfull a player, but his workrate and effectiveness ystday were miles ahead of Soul Manz.

I think we are being a bit harsh on both Convey and Seol here! Considering we were playing against Man Utd at Old Trafford it is hard to remember either giving the ball away on numerous occassions. Hunty was coming on and merely doing what he did last season - injecting a bit of energy against a tired defence. Something I would have expected Bobby to do had he come on in this situation. IMO the game wasn't suited to either yesterday but they certainly shouldn't be criticised after what was a brilliant result.
