What is the Proms

The Proms,

more formally known as the BBC Proms 

BBC 프롬즈로 더 공식적으로 알려진 프롬즈

or Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC,

또는 BBC가 제공하는 헨리우드 산책 음악회는

is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and other events held annually,

해마다 여름철 8주간에 걸쳐 개최되는 일일 관현악 클래식 음악연주회 그리고 다른 행사들이다 

predominantly in the Royal Albert Hall in central London, England, UK.

주로 영국의 잉글랜드, 런던 중앙에 있는 로얄 알버트 홀에서 이루어진다.

Founded in 1895, each season currently consists of more than 70 concerts in Albert Hall, 

1895년에 설립되어, 해마다 현재는 알버트 홀에서 70여회의 연주회.

Prom  is short for promenade concert , a term which originally referred to outdoor concerts

프롬은 산책길 연주의 줄임말인데 ,이 말은 원래 런던의 플레져 가든들에서의 야외 연주회를 일컬었다  

in London's pleasure gardens, where the audience was free to stroll around while the orchestra was playing.

플레져 가든에서는 관현악이 연주되는 동안 청중들이 배회하는 것은 자유로웠다.

In fact this tradition has been revived in parks and stately homes around the UK

사실 이런 전통은 배틀 프롬즈 처럼  산책길 연주회에서 영국일원의 공원이나 저택주변에서 되살아 나고 있다.

프롬잉은 핍장권이 예약석 보다는 훨씬 저렴한 홀( 극장이나 화랑)내부 입석을 시용하는 것을 일컫는다.

프로밍석은 오케스트라 바로 앞에 1000명 이상이 서서 음악회를 볼 수 있게 만들어진 자리다.

‘프로밍(Promming)’ 은‘‘프롬스(Proms)’를 즐기는 것, 프로머(Prommer)’는  즐기는 사람.

<희망과 영광의 땅>

작곡-Edward Elgar /1857 ~1934영국의 작은 마을 Lower Broadheath에서 출생

작사- A. C. Benson/1862 ~ 1925 수필가, 시인, 작가, 28대 학장 Magdalene College, Cambridge

엘가의 위풍당당 행진곡 D장조 제1곡 <Pomp and Circumstance March No,1 in D Major,>에

<Land of Hope and Glory 희망과 영광의 땅>가사를 붙임.   

“Pomp and Circumstance”는 Shakespeare 희곡 오셀로 Othello3막에서 따온 제목.

이 가사는 국왕 에드워드 7세(Edward VII)가 제안해서 붙인 것이라고 한다.

제목 덕분에 영국국가처럼 불리기도 했으며 제1차세계대전이 터지자 그 인기가 절정에 달했다

청중들은 이 곡을 듣고 애국심을 느꼈고, 작곡가 자신도 자신의 음악이 애국적 감정을 표현했다는 사실에 자랑스러워했다고 한다.
