Mar.16 Travel to Happiness (14-1) Granada(B): Alhambra
Alhambra
Another must-see place on a trip to Spain is the Alhambra (Palacio de la Alhambra) in Granada. After General Tariq of Islam attacked the Iberian Peninsula in 711, he quickly destroyed the Visigothic Kingdom, conquered almost the entire peninsula, and the Islamic kingdoms ruled it. However, Christians staged uprisings to reclaim their faith and counterattacked Islam. This is called the 'Reconquista.'During the Reconquista, when the Islamic Kingdom of Córdoba fell in 1234, four years later in 1238, King Al-Garib (of the Nasrid dynasty) established a kingdom in Granada. King Al-Garib maintained good diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Castile in Spain and devoted all his efforts to the development of commerce and industry. As a result of his benevolent governance, the economy prospered, and the king built a royal palace within the Alhambra. This palace was constructed over a period of more than 100 years and was completed during the reign of the seventh king, Yusuf I. At that time, more than 2,000 Islamic nobles lived in the palace complex, with well-organized markets, temples, residential areas, and barracks, and the palace included seven separate buildings.
Among them, the Nasrid dynasty palace stands out the most in terms of beauty and artistry. In 1492, the Kingdom of Granada could not withstand the ambitious attack of Queen Isabella, and the last king, Boabdil, gave up the fortress and left for Africa with his subjects. As he departed Granada, he looked back at the Alhambra Palace from the Sierra Nevada mountains and shed tears of regret. This marked the end of the seven-hundred-year era of Islam on the Iberian Peninsula.
While leaving Cartagena, I stopped by the BBVA bank to book tickets for the Alhambra Palace. However, unfortunately, reservations through BBVA were no longer available, so I was worried that we might not be able to get tickets. However, when checking in at the hotel, there was information about Alhambra tours on the lobby board, and we made a reservation there. Tomorrow morning, we will be able to see the Alhambra. When the writer Washington Irving was stationed at the U.S. embassy in Spain, he stayed in a room of this palace, which had been left in ruins due to the succession wars and Napoleon's invasion. While repairing one of its rooms, he published a novel, 'Tales of the Alhambra,' based on his feelings and experiences, which later led to the palace being re-evaluated. Being able to see the Alhambra Palace, the pinnacle of Islamic culture, an elegant and delicate world heritage site, brought us the greatest joy of our trip. All our fatigue disappeared. At 9 a.m., we left in front of the hotel, visiting several other hotels to pick up 15-16 tourists who boarded the bus.
At the entrance of the Alhambra, a handsome male guide, looking like a movie star, welcomed us.
(1) Following his explanations in English, we finally entered the Alhambra Palace. This place, which turns the entire small mountain into a palace, seems smaller in scale compared to any European palace. Above all, unlike European royal palaces, where gardens are artificially laid out on flat grounds, here, the curves of the mountain are preserved, and the forest covers the entire palace, giving it a feeling of a paradise on earth.
(2) The first place we visited was the Palace of Charles V. He was the grandson of Queen Isabella, and during his honeymoon in 1526, he stayed at the Alhambra Palace. Captivated by the beauty of the Alhambra, he commissioned the construction of a palace. It was built adjacent to the south of the Nasrid Palaces in Renaissance style. The building has an unusual structure with a two-story cloister in a perfect square; the columns on the second floor are Ionic, and those on the first floor are Doric. Bullfighting used to be held here, but now the Granada Music and Dance Festival takes place here every summer.
Passing through the Palace of Charles V, we enter the Nasrid Dynasty palace built by Islamic architects right next door. The guide explained enthusiastically, but it was very difficult to understand English immediately. Continuously referring to a Spanish guidebook, we were invited into the world of 'Arabian Nights' and toured the various rooms of the fantastic Nasrid Dynasty palace.
(3) Entering through a small door, we find the 'Sala Del Mexuar.' This was the room where the king conducted official duties and is the oldest existing room in this palace.
(4) Inside this room, there is a prayer room. When Muslim worshippers pray five times a day facing Mecca, the Albacin Hill, glowing white outside the window, can be seen.
(5) Upon exiting the Mexuar Room, you reach the 'Patio de los Arryanes.' It is a large rectangular pool, 35 meters north-south and 7 meters east-west, with 'Arryanes,' flowers called the flowers of paradise, planted on both sides, which is how it got its name. Behind it stands the Torre de Comares, 45 meters tall, under the blue sky of Andalusia where tourists take photos. The reflection of the tower, the blue sky, and the palace building gently shimmering on the water's surface is beautiful. After continuing to take photos, I wasn't able to fully charge my camera the previous night, so I could no longer capture more of Granada with my camera and decided to take it all in with my heart instead.
After passing through the Flower of Heaven, there are the King's Chamber and the rooms of the two sisters. The two sisters beloved by the king were said not to be Muslim women. They were Christians. Nevertheless, the king, who had fallen for the two girls, specially decorated a room for them. The guide seemed to explain that the stalactite decorations on the ceiling of their room were the most beautiful in this palace. From the two sisters' room, passing the king's bath and the room where 'Washington Irving' wrote 'Tales of the Alhambra,' you reach the Partal Garden. And beyond this garden is the summer villa of the Nasrid dynasty, built in the 14th century, called the Generalife.
Water is brought in from the snowmelt in the Sierra Nevada, creating waterways, fountains, and ponds throughout, showcasing the pinnacle of beauty.
How could one leave behind such a beautiful palace?
It is said that Boabdil, the last king of the Islamic kingdom of Granada, gave Queen Isabella the Alhambra Palace and 30,000 gold coins on the condition that his people would be protected and that he could return to Africa safely.
Afterwards, as acts of revenge against the Muslims continued, they made their final stand in the Albaicín and all met valiant deaths. History, driven by those in power, was no exception even in the Alhambra.
After finishing the visit to the Alhambra Palace, it was 1 PM. The bus dropped us off at the central square. We decided to have a meal at an outdoor café and took a seat there. We relieved our tired bodies from the heat and sightseeing with draft beer while each of us ordered lunch. A problem arose. It seemed that the spaghetti Jung-gong ordered was spoiled. He could hardly eat it and stopped. However, perhaps due to his poor physical condition, he said his stomach hurt. We decided to quickly go back to the hotel to rest and came out again at 7 PM. We strolled through the night streets, spent time at shopping streets, and around 8:40 PM entered the Cunini restaurant.
Cunini Restaurant, opened in 1953, recommended by the people of Granada: it opens at 8:30 PM.
When I arrived about 10 minutes late, most of the seats were already full. Since I said I came from Korea, they guided me to a table in the corner.
As I entered this restaurant, I saw a large pig hind leg 'jamón' glistening, with its color vivid and flavor alive. So, we ordered a plate of jamón, along with the house specialty seafood dishes, paella, and some white wine.
As I entered this restaurant, I saw a large pig ham 'jamón' with a glossy shine, just like when the colors are vivid and the flavors come alive. So, I ordered a plate of jamón, along with the restaurant's specialty seafood dishes, paella, and white wine.
It was unfortunate to see Jeonggong not feeling well due to the spaghetti he ate during the day.
He had also been physically and mentally exhausted from all the driving and handling the accounts.
