Exhibition of the short-term AIR in Changdong “ TRAUMA ”

Changdong National Art Studio, Korea, run by National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea is pleased to announce to held an exhibition "TRAUMA", which is representing 3 short-term artists in residency, Kim Su Theiler, Olivia Glebbeek, Young-Hoon Kim, from 21st February 2006 through 28th of February 2006. Since last December, these 3 artists have worked individually at the Changdong residency program for 3 months. Now they would like to open their project and studio to the public, bringing about a heated discussion by artists' talk on 21st February. This thematic exhibition "TRAUMA" explores some of ways in which the 3 contemporary artists address the subject of trauma : the immediate experience of traumatic events and situations and with their profound personal, psychological, social, and cultural reverberations of dealing with those events. They deal with the subject for a variety of reasons, and in a range of different ways. Some engage with specific situations as being a Korean adoptee and the effect that has on one's art practice and some make work that is more allusive, generating a situation for the potential of trauma within the work itself. An American Filmmaker, Kim Su Theiler, based in New Jersey, explores site-specificity of 'Changdong' : layered personal memory and family history, and asserting the multiple readings of how we define place by the surprising intervention of herself on Changdong artists-in-residence program. On the other hand, Olivia Glebbeek, a Dutch artist, express the image of the world, which is based on an absolute subjective perception with a life-sized wall installation on the subject of identity, sexuality, ambiguity, and ambition. Young-Hoon Kim, a pint maker, has tenaciously expressed his constant doubts and ambiguous feelings regarding a paranoiac ego-centric point of view after witnessing a tragic event related to a childhood superstition. As Art takes account of life, so it addresses trauma, making spaces for its consideration which are memorable, meaningful and often moving. Contact) Changdong National Art Studio T. █ Kim Su Theiler
This is Chang-dong/ still from site specific three channel video wall installation/ 150 x 206 cm/ 2006 Kim Su Theiler (b.1970) was born in Korea and now lives and works in New Jersey. Theiler, a filmmaker who has shown very experimental images and autobiographical narrative in a unique form, has produced a site-specific video wall installation, titled 'This is Changdong'. It features a chapter of unexpected events unfolded in a specific area 'Changdong' - the confluence of art and the artist's practice with a startling intervention of the personal. In this project, she asserts the multiple readings of how we define place: by way of physical arrangement of a locality, the character of place as defined by its history, by what is done in and to that place, and most importantly the people that occupy it and the actions that make up their lives. 'This is Changdong' traverses at least 40 years of the ward's history. For many who want to reconstitute their past, looking backward into the place they have continually occupied is taken for granted and there is primarily the very difficult matter of investigating the stories told by their progenitors. KimSu Theiler, an artist whose biographical information includes being a Korean American adoptee, had been displaced from the original source material. Unexpectedly, she finds herself for the first time like anyone else in the place that her history, her first memories, took shape. Hereupon, a body of work that hinges on theorizing memory comes to be confronted by events themselves unfolding in the site of the original memory. The primary canvas the piece is laid against is Changdong and an image taken of a local girl in the hills of Changdong. Cut into this background are three monitors that speak of Changdong: the artist studio residency program, an artist's vision, and a local girl's unintentional homecoming. 'This is Changdong' explores this new experience and the unanticipated reconnection to her past.
█ Olivia Glebbeek
Olivia Glebbeek (b.1976) was born in Seoul, lives and works in the Netherlands as adopted at the age of five. Since then, she has continued travelling out of curiosity, adventure, the wish to see life in all its diversity. Glebbeek tells stories about the nature of men; what we dream, what we forget, what we hide, what we fear, and what we despise. The objets in life-sized installation she produces is the image of the world, which is upon the absolute subjective perception, expressed by instinct, stimulation and danger, at the same time, cheerfulness and pureness. This world in her image is not of logics, rather of constant encounters of the unpredictable and the unfamiliar, which always go beyond what seems apparent. In this context the color black is significant to giving “substance" to small objects such as flowers, fruits, animals. Here the substance has double characters, polished but at the same time misty. The silhouette made of this black color, which she has used since the period of the art academy is without depth. It is that surface which offers herself and viewer to make their own stories to give the depth on their own. 'The playful path to wholeness' is the very path on which we can search for who we are. This path doesn't limit her search to the safety and the closed system and it is rather open for coincidence, surprise, and experiments. This path is consequently with no signals, borders, maybe ultimate destination.
█ Young-Hoon Kim
Tell me the truth, Mezzotint, 가변설치, 2006
'I ... , at the age of ten, remember very clearly 3 dancing balls of will-o'-the-wisp around a village shrine in the midsummer night...' Printmaker, Young-Hoon Kim, who has shown contemplative installation images using the Mezzotint print process, also works under the sway of a memorable tragic event from his childhood. His early experience has influenced the theme of his work. In it he weighs the ambiguities of his topsy-turvy values.On the surface, human beings exist with an uneasy look in his work, but then the subjects turn out to be himself. He amplifies the visual effect through his display strategy of marshalling the image of himself in compound numbers to give significance to the interpretation of variety and the infinity of an inner world. Also, it is shown that he has tenaciously expressed his constant doubts and ambivalence about a paranoiac, ego-centric point of view with the simple repetition of cutting out each individual image just like paper dolls after making the Mezzotint print. In the end, Kim sublimates his trauma, healing the memory while searching for the very substance of life.
