[인생은 선인장] (Today's Poem)

뜨거운 낮, 사막 위에 꿋꿋이 서있는 선인장

인생은 선인장 

                        최영찬 

몸 속에 물을 품고

가시 옷 입고

해와 달 오갈 땐

더 넓게 뿌리를 뻗친다

별빛 비출 때

작은 꽃들 피어나고

불타는 모래 위에서도

푸른 숨을 내쉰다

별빛이 빛나는 밤에 꽃을 피우는 선인장

[작가의 말]

사막의 한가운데, 태양은 모든 것을 태워버릴 듯 내리쬐지만, 그 속에서 꿋꿋하게 서 있는 생명이 있습니다. 바로 사구아로 선인장입니다. 

아파트 4층 높이에(12-15m) 이르는 거대한 몸을 세우고, 비가 내리면 물 한 방울이라도 더 받기 위해 뿌리를 넓게 펼칩니다. 그리고 어느 여름밤, 별빛 가득한 하늘 아래서 눈처럼 흰 꽃을 피웁니다.

그림에 나오는 흰 꽃은, 사구아로의 실제 모습인 동시에 인생에 대한 은유이기도 합니다. 뜨거운 한 낮을 견뎌낸 뒤, 고요한 밤 평화롭게 피는 꽃. 이것은 힘들게 사는 우리가 종종 맞는 짧은 평화와 희망의 순간을 의미합니다.

이 시는 단순히 선인장의 생태를 노래한 것이 아닙니다. 극한 고난 속에서도 꿋꿋이 서서, 푸른 숨을 쉬며 살아가는 강인한 우리 삶의 모습을 묘사한 노래입니다.

Life is a Cactus

[Author's Note]

In the heart of the desert, the sun beats down as if to burn everything to ash — yet there stands a life that refuses to yield. The saguaro cactus.

Rising to the height of a four-story building (12–15 meters), this towering giant spreads its roots wide at the first sign of rain, eager to catch every last drop. Then, on a summer night beneath a sky full of stars, it opens its flowers — white as snow.

The white flower in the image I've shared is both the saguaro's true face and a metaphor for life itself. A flower that blooms quietly in the peaceful night, after enduring the blazing heat of the day. It speaks of those brief moments of calm and hope that we, in the midst of our struggles, are sometimes blessed to meet.

This poem is not simply a portrait of a cactus. It is a song about a life of strength — one that stands firm through hardship, and at last, brings forth its dream in full bloom.
