▣ Nine in the fifth position : Waiting with food and wine.
Remaining steadfast brings good fortune.
[Explanation]
[Nine in the fifth position] waits for the right time while enjoying food and wine;
taking charge and handling affairs with this mindset will bring good fortune.
[Commentary]
Waiting for the right moment leisurely while nurturing both body and mind.
This is the proper attitude of one who waits, bringing auspiciousness.
Wine and tea are good companions while biding one's time [需于飮食,수우음식-
Waiting through food and drink].
Confucius' commentary states:
"The righteous and auspicious nature of waiting while enjoying food and drink is due
to the Fifth Line possessing strenght, balance, and correctness
Image Commentary: Waiting with food and drink brings good
fortune because of central correctness]."
Suhyeon(壽峴,수현 - a scholar/commentator) submitted a memprial emphasizing
that this is a vital lesson a ruler in the fifth position must keep in mind:
"I have respectfully considered this matter:
Many scholars interpreted Hexagram 5 (Xu) Line 5 as peacefully feasting
and enjoying oneself.
Upon careful reflection, although Line 5 possesses strength and central correctness,
it is positioned between two Yin lines―how could one truly enjoy peace at such a time?
The true meaning of this line is likely that even in small everyday drinking,
one must remain upright andcontribute properly,
awaiting a peaceful and joyful time to achieve true good fortune.
Though eating, drinling, and being full and merry is a great human pleasure."
Sometimes, indulgence in such taates ruins a nation,
So how could a ruler treat food and drink as trivial matters and act purely as they wish?
Ah! This is not merely my personal view, but what I have been taught.
I humbly pray that Your Majesty takes deep heed of the underlying meaning between the lines.
It serves as a warning that a ruler must not treat their attitude toward food and drink lightly.
This passage reflects concern that the teachings of the Duke of Zhou and Confucius
might be misunderstood.
Dongpo(Su Shi) wrote that Line 5 exhibits composure because it is strong,
central, and correct.
"To remain unperturbed even when enemies arrive[致寇至,치구지 -bringing bandite upon oneself]
is something only those with genuine inner composure can pull off.
Generally, waiting while partaking in food and drink,
And hosting others with open arms after disarming oneself is something a weak Yin force
could never accomplish.
Therefore, if Line 5 awaits Qian(Heaven,乾,건, ☰) in this manner,
Qian will surely submit in spirit and act in service of Line 5.
This is precisely why 'uprightness brings goos fortune'(貞吉,정길)."
As a historical parallel, it is viewed as akin to Gugong Danfu[
(father of Jili and grandfather of King Wen)] refraining from haste in the safe realm
of Mount Qi, quietly seeking transformation and advancement.
Meanwhile, a noble person takess Heaven as their ultimate fouundation[
- yet regards the people as Heaven].
Whereas for the common people, food comes first as their primary sustenance
[以食爲天,이식위천 - regarding food as their Heaven].
Thus, this Hexagram also uses the "Way of Food and Drink' as a metaphor for the
liberation of all living beings.
This applies to the case where Hexagram 5 (Xu/ Waiting) transitions into Hexagram 11
Tai / Peace).
