MOON LIGHT

Moonlight,

Sitting down on a fence of hardy orange trees

Pricked by thorns of trifoliate oranges

Ouch !

Moonlight,

Sitting down on a branch of an apple tree

Having a bite of a Jonathan apple

Oh, it's sour !

Appreciation Review 感想

The children’s poem “MOON  LIGHT” depicts the moonlight reflecting on a hardy orange tree and an apple tree. The trifoliate orange tree is described in a humorous and playful way, whereas the apple tree is described as having a sour taste, particularly about the apple variety called Hongok. I think this is an amazing children's poem that the more you read and the more you think about it, you’ll discover more new aspects and more new tastes.

In the first stanza, the moonlight, like a human being, is pricked by thorns of hardy orange trees and makes a sound like ‘Ouch!’

I remember someone said that the wind and sunlight are not pricked by thorns of trifoliate oranges, but in the poem “MOON  LIGHT”, she gets pricked by a thorn of the hardy orange tree.

The thorns of trifoliate orange tree are incomparably larger and sharper than those of rose, so it is said that in the old days, the hardy orange trees were planted next to the castle as a defensive fence. Hardy oranges are often planted in rows to form hedges. Their thorns are said to act as a deterrent, making it difficult for animals and/or people to pass through or over the fence.

In the second stanza, two questions arise:

1. Is a Jonathan apple really as sour as the moonlight recounts it?

- A Jonathan is a medium-sized, sweet apple with an acid taste and a hard but smooth skin that makes it good for eating fresh and good for cooking. (Source: Wikipedia)

2. Where did the word ‘Jonathan’ come from?

- There are two theories about the origin of ‘Jonathan.’

One is that a family collected and planted seeds from a local cider mill in Connecticut before traveling into the wilds of Ohio in 1796, and a woman named Rachel Negus Higley cultivated the plant. She continued to carefully cultivate the orchard, naming this plant after Jonathan Lash, a young local boy who frequently visited the orchard.

The other is that it originated from an Esopus Spitzenburg seedling on the Philip Rick farm in Woodstock, Ulster County, New York, in 1826. Originally called "Ricks" apples, the name was soon changed after Jonathan Zander, who discovered the apples and brought them to the attention of Judge Jesse Buel.
