스크랩 오프라 쇼로 알려진 흉부외과의사 `닥터 오즈`, "내 스승은 스베덴보리"

오프라 윈프리 쇼에서 의학상담을 맡고 있어 '닥터 오즈'로 미국 일반에 널리 알려진

메흐멧 오즈 교수(컬럼비아 의대 심장흉부외과)가 최근

자신의 신앙을 정리한 글에서 "내 스승은 스베덴보리"라고 밝혔습니다.

<영성과 건강>이라는 잡지에 표지 인물로 실린 닥터 오즈는,

그의 기고문 "닥터 오즈, 스승을 찾다 (Dr. Oz Finds His Teacher)" 에서 다음과 같이 말합니다. (간추린 요약입니다.)

"나는 외형상 모슬림으로 자랐으나 외과의사셨던 부친의 영향으로 항상 과학을 궁극적 진리로 신봉했었는데,

의사가 되고 나서 선한 사람들이 고통 받아야 하는 이유라든가 몸과 영혼의 상관관계, 그리고 우리 모두가 가진 깊은 영적 갈망에 눈뜨게 되었고, 그에 대한 진실을 찾고 싶었다.

해답은 최신 지식에서가 아니라 두 세기 전의 스웨덴 신학자에게서 발견하게 되었다.

'스베덴보리'라는 그 신학자를 나는 아내 리사에게 소개받았다.  

연애시절, 우리가 만난 지 얼마 안되었을 때

리사는 융, 블레이크, 괴테, 에머슨, 도스토옙스키, 발자크, 헬렌 켈러...등의 이름을 나열한 후 내게 "이들의 공통점이 뭔지 아느냐"고 물었다.

"모두 죽은 사람"이라는 내 대답은 그녀에게 별로 점수를 못 얻었는데,

알고 보니 그들은 모두 스베덴보리에게 깊은 영향을 받은 사람들이었다.

그 후로 스베덴보리의 많은 신학저서들을 읽어 가면서 내 삶과 의학은 크게 방향이 바뀌게 되었다.

과학이 답변해줄 수 없는 많은 내 의문을 스베덴보리가 답해주었다.

이를테면 심장을 아무리 해부해도 찾을 수 없는 '사랑'에 대한 탁월한 가르침이라든가

신과 인간 존재와 내세에 대한 납득할 수 있는 설명을 스베덴보리가 해주었다.

첫눈에 스베덴보리의 가르침들은 많이 친숙한 것들이었다.

유일신 사상, 무한과 절대, 사후세계의 존재, 성서를 신적 계시로 보는 점 등은 서양의 신앙으로 전혀 낯설지 않았다.

또 자아라는 망상을 초극하라는 것과, 만유가 영적 차원과 자연적 차원 양쪽에서 깊이 상호 의존하고 있다는 사상은 불교와 가까웠다.

그러나 스베덴보리를 자세히 읽게 되면 다른 가르침들과 구별되는 시각을 발견하게 된다.

예를 들면 '사랑의 영원성'이 있다. (결혼을 앞둔 리사가 내게 가장 강조했던 가르침이기도 하다.)

스베덴보리에 따르면, 남자와 여자는 각기 신의 형상을 부분적으로 반영하고 있으며

두 마음의 결합을 통해서 부부는 가장 온전하게 신의 형상에 근접할 수 있다.

그리고 행복의 원천인 이 '합심'은 영원히 완벽성을 더하며 성장해간다.

따라서 진정한 사랑이 있는 결혼은 내세에서도 영원히 이어진다.

(사람들은 사실 사랑이 죽음으로 끝나지 않음을 직감적으로 다들 알고 있지만,

일반적으로 전통적 교리들은 그렇게 가르치지 않는다.)

우리 부부의 결혼식 주례사에는 "죽음이 두 사람을 갈라놓을 때까지"라는 말이 들어있지 않았다.

내게 스베덴보리가 가장 특별한 이유는 그의 "Divine Human" 사상 때문이다.

신은 무한하기 때문에 유한한 인간은 자기 정도만큼만 신을 이해할 수 있다.

우리가 인간을 사랑하고 이해한다면 우리는 신을 더 잘 이해할 수 있다.

신만이 진정한 의미에서 참된 인간이기 때문이다.

스베덴보리가 말하는 인간 개인은 독립된 존재가 아니라 전체와 연결된 존재다.

인간은 누구나 전체에 공헌할 자신만의 특수한 목적 즉 존재의미와 그것을 이룰 능력을 부여받았다.

이는 마치 우리 몸의 모든 기관, 모든 세포가 각기 고유 기능을 갖고 있는 것과 마찬가지다.

모든 세포는 산소를 흡수하거나 감염을 막아내는 등 고유의 임무를 수행하는 데 완벽하게 적합한 기능을 갖고 있다.

무의미하게 지어진 사람은 하나도 없다는 생각을 가진 나는, 선택된 자만 구원한다는 전통적 교리의 편협한 신관에 대해 평소에도 의혹을 품고 있었다. 

스베덴보리는 말한다. 신은 모두를 향한 무한한 사랑과 자비의 존재이고 결코 우리를 심판하지 않는다고.

신은 각자의 특성에 알맞는 가장 행복한 상태에 이르도록 우리가 갈 곳을 자유로이 선택하게 한다.

사람이 자유롭게 자발적으로 선택하지 않은 선(善)은 결국 전혀 선이 아니기 때문이다.

신을 믿고 이웃을 사랑하는 데 초점을 두고 산다면, 어떤 종교를 가졌는가에 상관 없이 영원한 행복의 상태에 도달한다.

그 상태가 천국이고 그것은 그 사람이 선택한 것이다.

지옥은 그 반대의 경우, 즉 오로지 나 자신과 세상적 즐거움만을 추구할 때 도달하는 상태이며,

자기 자유로 선택한 지옥이 그에게 '지옥스러운' 이유는, 남을 해하려는 악한 욕망이 충족되지 못하는 데서 느끼는 괴로움 때문이라고 한다.

의사인 내게 매우 유용했던 가르침은 인간 고통에 대한 설명이다.

신이 고통을 허용하는 유일한 까닭은 우리의 영적 자유를 보존해주기 위해서다.

신은 결코 인간이 고통받길 원하지 않으며, 결과된 고통도 끊임없이 성장과 전환의 기회로 바꾸어준다. 

실제로 중병을 앓고 난 환자들의 삶에 변화가 일어나는 것을 나는 보아왔다.

심장이식수술 과정중 의사에게 있어서 수술 그 자체보다 더 어려운 것이

환자의 거부반응이나 절망을 마주해야 하는 것이고 그 방법은 의학이 가르쳐주지 않는다.

나는 스베덴보리의 가르침을 바탕으로 영성적 차원의 접근을 의학적 치료와 병행해온 결과,

환자나 가족 그리고 때로 그들의 심적 고통 앞에 무력한 나에게 많은 도움이 되고 있다."

He became famous for his frequent appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

 

Mehmet Öz, or Oz, was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Turkish parents. His father is Prof. Dr. Mustafa Oz. He is married to author and Reiki master Lisa Oz. He was educated at Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1982 he received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University. In 1986 he obtained a joint MD and MBA degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The Wharton School.

Oz is Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Columbia University. He directs the Heart Assist Device Program and is a founder of the Complementary Medicine Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. His research interests include heart replacement surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and healthcare policy. He has authored more than 350 original publications, book chapters, abstracts, and books and has received several patents.

He serves on the Trustees Advisory Council of the OneVoice Movement, a non-profit organization that strives to empower moderate Israelis and Palestinians to take a more assertive role in resolving the conflict.

Oz has been influenced by many people, including the ideas of the Swedish scientist, philosopher, theologian, and Christian mystic Emanuel Swedenborg. He recently wrote in Spirituality and Health Magazine that "As I came into contact with Swedenborg's many writings, I began to understand Swedenborg's profound insights and how they applied directly to my life". He mentions Swedenborg's ideas that marriage lasts to eternity, everyone has a purpose in this world, God is love, and Swedenborg's answers to "Why do bad things happen?".

Dr. Mehmet Oz is perhaps the most accomplished and respected cardiothoracic surgeon in the United States. Born in the US to Turkish parents, he works at Columbia University New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. A graduate of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he also holds an MBA from Wharton School of Business at Penn. This remarkable doctor operates on some 400 patients a year, is a Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Columbia University, director of Cardiovascular Institute at Columbia Presbyterian, directs the Heart Assist Device Program and is the founder of the Complimentary Medicine Program.

He has published more than 350 articles and contributes regularly to magazines like Newsweek, Time and Oprah's 'O', among many others. He has appeared numerous times on network news programs and has frequently been featured in lead stories in magazines and newspapers from around the world including the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, Stern, and Self. He writes award winning books, and serves as one of the Global Leaders of Tomorrow, elected by World Economic Forum. In December, Esquire magazine identified him as the best heart surgeon in New York and highlighted Dr. Oz' pioneering efforts to combine Western medicine with alternative therapies. Dr. Oz is married to Lisa Oz and is a doting father to their four children.

One of the more extraordinary things about this Turkish American doctor is his age: he is only 42! By any standard, Dr. Oz leads a very busy and productive life. Recently, he generously agreed to give us some time to talk to him in his New York office. My first question was based on an observation: Dr. Oz seems very proud of his Turkish heritage and promotes his roots whenever he can. Asked if his background has influenced him as a surgeon, he replied that being Turkish has affected his perspective on how to approach many challenges and his approach to life in general. This dual perspective influences his geopolitical views, attitudes towards training and interaction with others.

His familiarity with both cultures has made him more tolerant of others and open-minded about alternative views.

Global medicine
It is perhaps because Dr. Oz is the product of two cultures that he has taken such leading role in exploring and practicing alternative ways of healing to supplement Western medicine. He prefers to use the term "global medicine" and believes that traditional medicine and non-traditional methods of healing do not have to be mutually exclusive. He gives an example in which a heart transplant has been successfully completed but the patient does not feel "healed" or "whole" afterwards. In accordance with the idea of treating a person and not a disease, supplemental methods of healing may be used in this situation. He also believes that heart trouble may be the result of other problems like anger, anxiety, stresses of various kinds…and these issues must also be addressed. To this end, he has been successfully combining breathing techniques, acupuncture, hypnosis, acupressure, and massage therapy with mainstream methods to treat his patients during and after an operation.

What's next for Mehmet Oz?
At the moment it is difficult to count how many hats Dr. Oz wears in his daily life: He is a tremendously busy man with a young family. He is also an ideal candidate for a public office which he finds "appealing" but he adds "I would be more interested in an appointed position where I could play a role in reworking our health care system for a defined period of time. I love heart surgery too much to ever leave it."
