하이볼이란 명칭이 어떻게 처음 붙여졌는지를 놓고선 명확히 남은 기록이 없다. 외국에서도 합의된 유래가 없다.

그러나 과거 열차의 출발 신호를 알리던 'Highball Signal'에서 유래했다는 설이 유력합니다.

다른 가설로 영국에서 골프를 칠 때 주로 위스키와 소다수를 섞어 마셨는데, 경기 후반부로 갈수록 취기 때문에 공이 자꾸 위로 올라가서 '하이볼'이라고 지었다는 설이 있는데 이건 거의 유머 수준이다

현재의 열차 차단 시스템이 없던 과거에는 위와 같은 'Highball Signal'이라는 도구를 사용했습니다. 이 도구는 양쪽에 공이 달려 있는데 끈을 당겨서 한 쪽의 공을 들어 올리면 다른 쪽은 내려가는 구동 방식을 가졌습니다.

공이 들어올려진 쪽의 레인에는 '열차 통행 가능', '최고 속도로 진행'이라는 의미를 갖습니다.
